India steps up hunt for origin of mysterious brain-damaging virus Posted: 28 May 2018 06:16 AM PDT By Subrat Patnaik and D. Jose MUMBAI/KOCHI (Reuters) - India began a fresh round of tests to trace the origin of a rare brain-damaging virus that has killed 13 people, a health official said on Monday, as initial tests on animals suspected of carrying the Nipah virus showed no sign of the disease. All animal samples, including those from bats, cattle, goats and pigs from the southern state of Kerala, sent to the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases, in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, were negative for Nipah, said animal husbandry officer A. Mohandas. The department was now collecting samples of fruit bats from Perambra, the suspected epicenter of the infection and nearby areas, Mohandas said. |
26 Syria regime, 9 Russia fighters killed in IS attack: monitor Posted: 27 May 2018 04:31 AM PDT At least 26 Syrian regime forces and nine Russian fighters were killed in an Islamic State group attack earlier this week in Syria's eastern desert, a monitor said Sunday. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the jihadists had targeted a group of Syrian and allied Russian fighters near the town of Mayadeen in Deir Ezzor province on Wednesday. Some of those Russian nationals were government troops, but not all of them," said Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman. |

Real-life 'Spider-Man' who climbed building to save child to meet with French president Posted: 27 May 2018 07:38 PM PDT It's surely a stunt out of a Hollywood film. A man's dramatic climb up the side of a building to rescue a child in Paris earned him widespread praise, plus a meeting with French president Emmanuel Macron. SEE ALSO: NASA shares the story of how a SpaceX launch completely melted this poor camera 22-year-old Mamoudou Gassama, an undocumented Malian migrant, took less than 40 seconds to scale four floors of an apartment block in the city's 18th arrondissement on Saturday afternoon. Videos of the incident were widely shared on social media, showing Gassama being cheered on by a crowd of onlookers. "I saw all these people shouting, and cars sounding their horns. I climbed up like that and, thank God, I saved the child," Gassama said, according to AFP. "I felt afraid when I saved the child... (when) we went into the living room, I started to shake, I could hardly stand up, I had to sit down." Firefighters arrived later at the scene. A spokesperson for the Parisian fire department told AFP it was fortunate "there was someone who was physically fit and who had the courage to go and get the child." The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, congratulated Gassama for his "act of bravery" on Twitter, and said she had called him personally to "thank him warmly." "He explained to me that he had arrived from Mali a few months ago dreaming of building his life here," Hidalgo added in another tweet. — Anne Hidalgo (@Anne_Hidalgo) May 27, 2018 "I told him that his heroic act is an example to all citizens and that the city of Paris will obviously be very keen to support him in his efforts to settle in France." An online petition has been started to help push immigration authorities to receive Gassama's papers. A presidential spokesperson told AFP that Macron will meet Gassama on Monday morning. Authorities say the child's parents were not at home at the time, according to France 24. The child's father has been placed in custody, and will face court on Sunday evening for neglecting his parental responsibilities. Summer in the city — New York City's parks in 1978 Posted: 27 May 2018 09:07 AM PDT |
Posted: 28 May 2018 12:20 AM PDT It took less than a minute of extreme bravery for Mamoudou Gassama, a Malian migrant, to scale the façade of a Paris building and save a four-year-old boy clinging to the edge of a balcony for dear life. Barely 24 hours later, the 22-year-old's spectacular fourth-floor rescue earned him an invitation to the Elysée Palace, where President Emmanuel Macron on Monday hailed his "courage and devotion" and offered him French nationality and a job as a fireman. His feat highlights the quandary facing Paris in dealing humanely with a migrant influx that homeless charities this month warned risked ending in tragedy, after two refugees drowned in canals and a third was stabbed. France has been transfixed by video footage of the Malian's exploits, which has been viewed millions of times on social media and turned Mr Gassama into an overnight celebrity with the nickname "Spider-Man". The film shows a crowd cheering on Mr Gassama from the street as he pulls himself from balcony to balcony with his bare hands. With a neighbour in the apartment block in Paris's multi-ethnic 18th arrondissement unable to reach the boy, Mr Gassama manages to grab the four-year-old, who it appears climbed on to the balcony after being left alone by his father. The crowd goes wild. "I ran. I crossed the street to save him," he told Mr Macron at their Elysée meeting. "When I started to climb, it gave me courage to keep climbing." God "helped me" too, said Mr Gassama, who said that his legs felt like jelly once the child was safe and sound. "Thank God I saved him." While "Spider-Man" was scaling the building, it transpired that child's father – who lives alone with his son – was outside playing Pokémon Go on his mobile phone. He now faces a maximum two-year prison term and €30,000 (£26,000) fine for dereliction of parental duty. In excerpts of their conversation posted on the President's Facebook page, Mr Macron said: "Bravo. You saved a child. Without you, no one knows what would have become of him. You need courage and the capability to do that. "This is an exceptional act. We'll obviously be setting all your papers straight and if you wish it, we will start the process of naturalisation so that you can become French." The president said Mr Gassama deserved a "meaningful" job, adding: "What you have done corresponds with what firemen do. If this fits your wishes, you could join the fire brigade so that you can do [such acts] on a daily basis." Mr Gassama, who lives in a hostel for migrants in Montreuil, an eastern suburb of Paris, told Mr Macron how he tried to cross the Mediterranean in March 2014 to reach Italy after a long, arduous spell in Libya, but was caught by police and beaten. "But I wasn't discouraged," he said. After crossing at an unspecified date, he was allowed to legally stay in Italy, but decided to join his older brother, who has lived in France for decades. VIDÉO - Un homme a escaladé à mains nues la façade d'un immeuble hier après-midi dans le 18ème à #Paris pour secourir un petit garçon de 4 ans accroché à un balcon. (Snapchat) pic.twitter.com/xTHvHJQD1D— Brèves de presse (@Brevesdepresse) 27 May 2018 His red-carpet treatment comes just weeks after Mr Macron enacted an asylum and immigration bill, which migrants' rights groups criticised as inhumane. Mr Macron said there was no contradiction between this and rewarding Mr Gassama's bravery. Meanwhile, authorities are preparing to evacuate around 2,400 migrants from makeshift encampments in Paris. There was approval across the political spectrum for Mr Gassama to be granted honorary citizenship. But Nicolas Bay, general secretary of the far-Right Front National party, only supported the move on condition that the government throw out "all illegal immigrants". Mr Gassama is due to receive a residency permit on Tuesday and start working as a fireman. The Paris fire brigade said: "Mamoudou Gassama clearly has the required values to join." However, an inquiry has been launched. This is not the first time an undocumented migrant has been hailed a hero in France. Lassana Bathily, a Malian Muslim, was awarded French citizenship after helping save the lives of several customers during a terrorist hostage drama in a Jewish supermarket in Paris in 2014 in which four people were killed, as well as the assailant. The 24-year-old shop assistant was in the underground stockroom of the Hyper Casher store when gunman Amédy Coulibaly burst in upstairs, firing from a Kalashnikov. He hid many in a freezer, which he switched off. |

EU moves to ban single-use plastics Posted: 28 May 2018 05:38 AM PDT The European Commission on Monday proposed banning single-use plastic products such as cotton buds and plastic straws and putting the burden of cleaning up waste on manufacturers in an effort to reduce marine litter. Under the proposal, single-use plastic products with readily available alternatives will be banned and replaced with more environmentally sustainable materials. The proposal also requires EU countries to collect 90 percent of single-use plastic drink bottles by 2025 and producers to help cover costs of waste management and clean-up. |

One Harvey Weinstein accuser says she won't celebrate his arrest in a must-read thread Posted: 27 May 2018 03:03 PM PDT In the days following Harvey Weinstein's arrest, some within the entertainment industry have posted a statement released by Time's Up — the organization created in the wake of the scandal. Others, like actress Annabella Sciorra, have taken things a step further. Sciorra was one of the women to come forward in Ronan Farrow's follow up stories featured in The New Yorker. On Sunday, she shared that she felt the farthest thing from celebratory when she heard the initial news about his arrest. SEE ALSO: Harvey Weinstein hands himself in to police in New York "The law finally caught up with Harvey Weinstein on Friday and charge him with multiple counts of rape and sexual assault," she tweeted. "The public statement from his lawyer was intended only to denigrate all the brave women who came forward and spoke out against him." "All that says is, money buys VIP treatment in the justice system no matter how serious or violent the crimes," she tweeted, after referencing his "million dollar bond." "If there was truly 'equal justice under the law,' Harvey Weinstein would be behind bars in Rikers today, waiting for his own day in court, not free to roam New York, his other hunting ground, wearing an ankle bracelet," Sciorra wrote. Spain saves over 500 migrants at sea Posted: 27 May 2018 09:33 AM PDT Spain's maritime rescue service said Sunday it had rescued 532 migrants who were attempting the perilous crossing of the Mediterranean Sea from north Africa this weekend. Rescue boats intercepted 239 migrants travelling in eight small boats off Spain's southern coast on Sunday, a day after 293 migrants were pulled from nine vessels. Three of the boats sank on Sunday right after the migrants were plucked from them due to their "poor state", the maritime service said in a Twitter message. |
Iran sanctions shadow falls on smaller German banks Posted: 26 May 2018 07:24 PM PDT Germany's biggest lenders have shied away from business with Iran after past penalties for breaching US sanctions, but smaller banks have leapt on opportunities afforded by the nuclear deal rejected by Donald Trump. There are just months to go until a November deadline issued by Washington after the US president abandoned a hard-fought agreement that loosened business restrictions on the Islamic Republic in exchange for Tehran giving up its pursuit of nuclear weapons. "We will continue to serve our clients," for now, said Patrizia Melfi, a director at the "international competence centre" (KCI) founded by six cooperative savings banks in the small town of Tuttlingen in southwest Germany. |

U.S. proposes U.N. sanctions against six senior South Sudan officials: draft Posted: 27 May 2018 12:19 PM PDT The United States has proposed the U.N. Security Council impose sanctions against several South Sudanese ministers and officials, accusing them of obstructing peace efforts and blocking humanitarian assistance to civilians, according to a draft resolution seen by Reuters on Sunday. A resolution needs nine votes in favor and no vetoes by Russia, China, France, Britain or the United States to pass.
