Philippine Church in 'show of force' against drug killings Posted: 18 Feb 2017 05:21 AM PST Thousands of Catholic faithful gathered in the Philippine capital on Saturday for a "show of force" in the biggest rally yet to stop extrajudicial killings in President Rodrigo Duterte's drug war. More than 6,000 people have died since Duterte took office seven months ago and ordered an unprecedented crime war that has drawn global criticism for alleged human rights abuses, but is popular with many in the mainly Catholic country. Members of one of the nation's oldest and most powerful institutions chanted prayers and sang hymns as they marched to condemn a "spreading culture of violence". |
Powerful storm pounds Southern and Central California Posted: 18 Feb 2017 04:41 AM PST A powerful Pacific storm blew into Southern and Central California on Friday with wind-driven heavy rains that downed power lines and electrocuted a man, killed a motorist in a submerged car and disrupted hundreds of flights at airports. With the storm feeding on an atmospheric river of moisture stretching far out into the Pacific, precautionary evacuations of homes in some neighborhoods were requested due to the potential for mudslides and debris flows. More than 300 arriving and departing flights were delayed or canceled at Los Angeles International Airport. (AP) See more news-related photo galleries and follow us on Yahoo News Photo Tumblr |

Detectives in Kuala Lumpur are trying to get to the bottom of the cloak-and-dagger murder that South Korea says was carried out by poison-wielding female agents working for their secretive northern neighbour. North Korean diplomats objected to the post-mortem examination, Malaysian officials say, but Kuala Lumpur has stood firm, and said Friday it would not release the body until procedures were complete. |

Nine people flee U.S. border patrol to seek asylum in Canada Posted: 17 Feb 2017 03:02 PM PST Nine asylum-seekers, including four children, barely made it across the Canadian border on Friday as a U.S. border patrol officer tried to stop them and a Reuters photographer captured the scene. As a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officer seized their passports and questioned a man in the front passenger seat of a taxi that had pulled up to the border in Champlain, New York, four adults and four young children fled the cab and ran to Royal Canadian Mounted Police on the other side. RCMP officers watching from the other side helped them up, lifting the younger children and asking a woman, who leaned on her fellow passenger as she walked, if she needed medical care. |
Trump's team in disarray, U.S. Senator McCain tells Europe Posted: 18 Feb 2017 03:53 AM PST By Phil Stewart and Robin Emmott MUNICH, Germany (Reuters) - Republican Senator John McCain broke with the reassuring message that U.S. officials visiting Germany have sought to convey on their debut trip to Europe, saying on Friday that the administration of President Donald Trump was in "disarray". McCain, a known Trump critic, told the Munich Security Conference that the resignation of the new president's security adviser Michael Flynn over his contacts with Russia reflected deep problems in Washington. "I think that the Flynn issue obviously is something that shows that in many respects this administration is in disarray and they've got a lot of work to do," said McCain, even as he praised Trump's defense secretary. |

Why Exercise Is Not Enough to Prevent Weight Gain Posted: 16 Feb 2017 10:54 PM PST Exercise on its own — without also following a healthy diet — isn't enough to help people lose or even just maintain their weight, a recent study suggests. The new results run counter to the idea that the obesity epidemic in the U.S. is caused by a lack of physical activity, said lead study author Lara Dugas, an assistant professor of public health sciences at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. When it comes to figuring out the causes of obesity, "what we really need to look at is what people are eating," Dugas told Live Science. |
How to install the genius media app that Apple banned from the App Store Posted: 18 Feb 2017 12:00 PM PST What is Kodi and why should one want to install on the iPhone or any other iOS device? It's a versatile media player that's already quite popular with the crowds. You may have used it on other devices back when it was called XBMC. Unfortunately, it's not the kind of application that Apple allows in the App Store, so you can't really enjoy it on iOS devices unless you're willing to jailbreak the phone, or pull off other tricks that would let you sideload the app. If you're looking to install Kodi on the iPhone 7 or any other kind of iOS device without jailbreaking, then you're in luck. It looks like such a method is already available. The method does work, and it's as shady as you can expect. But if you can't go without Kodi in your life, and you don't want to jailbreak the iPhone 7, or can't find a method that jailbreaks the phone, then you could always go for this option. Discovered by Kodi Tips the trick involves navigating to a shady site — just because it's in a language you don't understand — and downloading an app to your iPhone. Once that's done, an error message will appear when you'll try to run Kodi. However, you can fix it by simply choosing to trust the application from the phone's Settings menu. Check out Kodi Tips full instructions if you really want to go through with the procedure. Finally, if all else fails, there's one other type of Kodi install for the iPhone that you can try, which doesn't require a jailbreak either. You have to pretend you're an app developer and use Apple's Xcode to get the app running on your iOS device — Macworld has all the instructions, assuming the method is still available. |

Trump goes to his comfort zone: campaigner-in-chief Posted: 17 Feb 2017 04:52 PM PST By John Whitesides WASHINGTON (Reuters) - After a tumultuous opening month in the White House, President Donald Trump is heading to a friendlier, familiar and potentially rejuvenating place: the campaign trail. Beset by vicious fights over his Cabinet, legal setbacks over his immigration orders, the resignation of his national security adviser and an investigation into possible links between his campaign and Russian intelligence, Trump is turning to the winning formula that vaulted him into the White House: big, adoring crowds and fiery, angry speeches. |

U.S. shuts high-security labs over concerns about air hose safety Posted: 17 Feb 2017 03:07 PM PST "We have no evidence that anybody has suffered ill health effects from breathing air that came through these hoses," Stephan Monroe, associate director for laboratory science and safety at the CDC, told Reuters. Monroe said he was confident scientists were not exposed to pathogens because the air they breathed passed through HEPA filters. The suits they wear also use positive air pressure to prevent pathogens from entering the suit. |
