| SNL Highlights: A Moving Jan Hooks Tribute and the Return of Bill Hader's Stefon Posted: 12 Oct 2014 10:10 AM PDT  On Saturday night, Saturday Night Live paid tribute to former cast member Jan Hooks, who died last week at age 57, with a gut-punching clip of Hooks and former scene partner Phil Hartman in their "Love Is a Dream" short film. Bill Hader returned to Studio 8H to host the show, and he wasn't the only familiar face who came back. He and his Skeleton Twins co-star (and fellow former SNL cast member) Kristen Wiig introduced the Hartman/Hooks sketch, and also teamed up for his opening monologue and a Hollywood Game Night parody. Hader also resurrected his popular characters Stefon and newscaster Herb Welch. Unsurprisingly, with Hader and Wiig back, SNL was the strongest it's been in weeks. Check out some of the best sketches from the episode below: "Love Is a Dream": Watch this short film with Jan Hooks and Phil Hartman and try not to cry. Opening Monologue: During his run on SNL, Hader never sang on the show—and there's a good reason why. Not even Wiig and Harvey Fierstein could help him. Herb Welch: While this wasn't the funniest Herb Welch sketch SNL has ever done, it was nice to see Hader's curmudgeonly newscaster back on the air. This time, he was interviewing high school students about a virginity rally. Hollywood Game Night : Come for Kate McKinnon as Jane Lynch, stay for Cecily Strong as Sofia Vergara, Beck Bennett as Nick Offerman, and Kristen Wiig as Kathie Lee Gifford (!). 39 Cents: For anyone doubting the SNL's need for a diverse cast—it's so the show can do skits like this one, featuring Hader as an aid worker who's trying to raise 39 cents a day to help starving people in an African village.
