U.S. probes cause of Marine Corps plane crash that killed 16 Posted: 11 Jul 2017 02:47 PM PDT U.S. officials on Tuesday were investigating the cause of a military transport plane crash that killed 16 service members including elite special operations forces a day earlier, leaving a miles-long trail of wreckage in rural northern Mississippi. It plunged into a soybean field at about 4 p.m. CDT (5 p.m. EST) on Monday in Mississippi's LeFlore County, about 100 miles (160 km) north of Jackson, the state capital. The names of the deceased were being withheld until family members were notified. |
US investigates Air Canada near miss that could have caused disaster Posted: 11 Jul 2017 09:15 AM PDT Air Canada also said it was investigating the reports. US aviation authorities are investigating a near miss at a San Francisco airport after an Air Canada plane almost landed on a crowded taxiway rather than the runway. The Air Canada Airbus 320 was cleared to land at a runway at San Francisco international airport late on Friday. |
US high school student scores Mattis interview scoop Posted: 10 Jul 2017 09:02 AM PDT A US high school student has scored an exclusive interview with Pentagon chief Jim Mattis after an aide of President Donald Trump inadvertently exposed the defense secretary's cell phone number. The Washington Post in May ran a photo of Trump and his bodyguard Keith Schiller walking outside the White House, with Schiller clutching a bunch of papers. Sharp-eyed readers noticed that atop the papers was a yellow sticky note that said "Jim, Mad Dog, Mattis" along with a phone number. |

Wildfire in California canyons spreads overnight Posted: 09 Jul 2017 07:02 PM PDT (Reuters) - A fast-moving wildfire burned overnight through thousands more acres of steep terrain near California's central coast, officials said on Sunday, as high temperatures and parched vegetation fueled dozens of blazes in the U.S. West and Southwest. The Alamo Fire has engulfed about 23,900 acres in the area of the border between San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties, a few miles from the city of Santa Maria, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire for short. About 15 percent of the fire had been contained by Sunday evening, Cal Fire tweeted. |

Posted: 10 Jul 2017 01:31 PM PDT Jared Kushner tried and failed to secure a $500m loan from one of Qatar's richest businessmen, before pushing his father-in-law to toe a hard line with the country, it has been alleged. This intersection between Mr Kushner's real estate dealings and his father-in-law's international issues highlights the difficulties of an administration besiged with an unprecedented number of conflicts of interest. According to The New York Times, the building has not generated enough to pay its debts in several years, forcing Kushner Companies to cover the multimillion-dollar difference. |
Indian man tries to open plane's emergency door in midair Posted: 11 Jul 2017 08:21 AM PDT An Indian man tried to open an emergency exit door on a packed AirAsia flight in midair, injuring fellow passengers and crew members who rushed to restrain him as the plane prepared to land, the airline said. Following the incident Aftab Ahmed, 32, was detained and handed over to airport security in eastern Ranchi city late Monday. "AirAsia would like to confirm that the airline encountered an unruly passenger onboard (a) flight... from New Delhi to Ranchi on July 10," an airline spokesperson said in a statement. |

Syrian Observatory says it has 'confirmed information' that Islamic State chief is dead Posted: 11 Jul 2017 07:07 AM PDT By Lisa Barrington and Ellen Francis CAIRO/BEIRUT (Reuters) - The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights told Reuters on Tuesday that it had "confirmed information" that Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has been killed. The report came just days after the Iraqi army recaptured the last sectors of the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, which Baghdadi's forces overran almost exactly three years ago. Russia's Defence Ministry said in June that it might have killed Baghdadi when one of its air strikes hit a gathering of Islamic State commanders on the outskirts of the Syrian city of Raqqa. |

Guilty pug has the absolute worst poker face of all time Posted: 11 Jul 2017 08:18 AM PDT Definitive fact: all dogs are good dogs — even when they break stuff. It's hard to blame a pet for doing something wrong because they're just so cute and we just love 'em so much. And because they know we'll snuggle them anyway, even though they've done something wrong, some sneaky pets will act as though they had nothing to do with it, knowing they can trick us into thinking that all the pillows just happened to burst open all on their own. SEE ALSO: Poor little dog had to be rescued from lagoon 2 times by police officers But Twitter user Kai Johnson's pug, Alfie, couldn't hide his guilt for long. Who could punish a pup this cute? Even though Alfie clearly had something to do with the mess, Twitter users strongly came to his defense because, once again, sad pug eyes are a human's Kryptonite. Russia 'may expel US diplomats' if Donald Trump does not return confiscated properties Posted: 11 Jul 2017 07:53 AM PDT Russia may expel 30 US diplomats and seize US diplomatic property in Russia if Donald Trump does not release two Russian compounds seized by American authorities in 2016, Russian diplomats have warned. Sergey Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, said Moscow is outraged by the ongoing property dispute, which he said was the result of an attempt by the out going administration of Barack Obama to "poison to a maximum U.S.-Russian ties." US State Department personnel outside the Maryland compound in December Credit: Brian Witte/AP "The situation is outrageous. It is just shameful for the United States to leave this situation hanging in the mid-air," Mr Lavrov said on Russian state television on Tuesday. Mr Lavrov said retaliatory measures were being drawn up but declined to discuss the details. Earlier on Tuesday Izvestia, a broadsheet close to the Kremlin, cited foreign ministry sources saying plans had been drawn up to expel 30 US diplomats and seize US diplomatic property in "mirror image" measures. Lavrov calls for Russia to expel US diplomats 00:38 Mr Obama expelled 35 Russian diplomats and ordered the seizure of two Russian diplomatic compounds in December 2016 as retaliation for Russian meddling in the US presidential election. The properties included a compound in Long Island, New York, and a sumptuous 45-acre estate in Maryland that had acted as the Russian embassy's dacha since 1972. US authorities said the compounds had been used for intelligence gathering. Russia did not respond immediately, saying it would wait to see if relations improved under the incoming Donald Trump administration. In what was widely seen as a parting jibe at Mr Obama, Vladimir Putin rejected a request from Mr Lavrov for tit-for-tat expulsions and invited US diplomats and their families to the Kremlin Christmas tree instead. The second Russian compound in the village of Upper Brookville, Long Island Credit: Alexander F. Yuan/AP Patience has worn thin since Mr Trump assumed office in February. The Russian foreign ministry warned in late June that it was preparing retaliatory measures in case the properties were not returned. The sources speaking to Izvestia said patience had run out after Mr Putin failed to find agreement on the issue during his meeting with Mr Trump last week. The source said the measures will take effect if the issue is not resolved at a meeting between Sergei Ryabkov, a deputy foreign minister, and Thomas Shannon, a US under secretary of state, in St Petersburg next week. It is not clear which US properties might be targeted, but they could possibly include a dacha complex owned by the US embassy at Serebyany Bor outside Moscow. |
India holds naval exercises with US, Japan Posted: 10 Jul 2017 02:04 AM PDT India began holding naval exercises with the United States and Japan off its south coast on Monday, seeking to forge closer military ties to counter growing Chinese influence in the region. The exercises come as Indian and Chinese troops face off in a remote and strategically sensitive part of the Himalayas where India, China and Bhutan meet. India has a longstanding territorial dispute with its northern neighbour, which is also expanding its naval presence in the region. |

No official details were immediately available on the circumstances of the crash in northern Mississippi's LeFlore County, about 100 miles (160 km) north of Jackson, the state capital. Is Volkswagen to beat Tesla at its own game? Posted: 10 Jul 2017 09:51 AM PDT By the time Volkswagen begins delivering its first standalone battery-powered electric car in 2020, Tesla expects to be building and selling at least one million units of its own electric vehicles per year. Despite this, Volkswagen believes it's still better placed than Tesla to become the dominant force in the global automotive market when it comes to all-electric vehicles. Herbert Diess, who's in charge of the VW Group's namesake brand, believes that what Volkswagen lacks in first-mover advantage compared to Tesla can be more than made up for by its global scale and its greater manufacturing expertise and experience. |

A year later, injured turtle returns to man who fixed his shell Posted: 10 Jul 2017 03:14 PM PDT A turtle's shell is essential to their protection. A damaged shell makes the creature vulnerable, and can even sometimes be fatal. Luckily, there are heroes that care about the wellbeing of our scaly friends, like this Reddit user's father. SEE ALSO: This adorable baby turtle blob is bringing hope to Southeast Asia On Monday, Daniel Hollenback — who goes by the username Sublimebro — uploaded photos to Reddit of a turtle whose injuries were healed thanks to his father's efforts. The tiny turtle came back a year later looking better than ever. Adorably, the Reddit user's father — presumably the above mentioned Ken — marked a "Ken's Body Shop" on the putty patch. Although Ken's writing didn't survive, the turtle thankfully did, and people made car repair jokes about it. Posted: 10 Jul 2017 10:33 AM PDT Pictures of the Iraqi soldiers celebrating their defeat of Isis in Mosul marked a milestone in the fight against the Islamist group but it was also a victory for Barack Obama's strategy in the region, a senior Pentagon official has said. While the Iraqi armed forces staged an exhausting nine-month siege around the city of Mosul, the US-led air campaign in Iraq and Syria initiated by the former president appears to have proved successful in weakening Isis forces. The US and its allies, including but not limited to the UK, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Turkey, also provided continual training and advised proxy local forces without sending their own troops into action. |
