The latest fatality count was announced as authorities released a revised list of 130 people reported missing by loved ones after flames largely obliterated the Sierra foothills town of Paradise, about 175 miles (280 km) north of San Francisco, last Thursday. Netanyahu battles to save weakened ruling coalition Posted: 16 Nov 2018 07:29 AM PST Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party denied Friday that he had decided to call a snap election, as he battled to keep the government afloat after his defence minister quit over a Gaza ceasefire. Netanyahu's ruling coalition was left with a single seat majority in parliament after the walkout on Wednesday by Avigdor Lieberman and his hawkish Yisrael Beitenu party. Netanyahu held crunch talks on Friday with his other main right-wing rival, Education Minister Naftali Bennett, whose religious nationalist Jewish Home party has threatened also to quit unless he is given Lieberman's job. |

With Christie's commission, "Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)," surpassed the auction house's pre-sale estimate of about $80 million, following a bidding war between two determined would-be buyers once the work hit $70 million. The previous record for a work by a living artist was held by Jeff Koons' sculpture "Balloon Dog," which sold for $58.4 million in 2013. |

Welcome to Walmart, now a shelter for California fire evacuees Posted: 15 Nov 2018 02:55 AM PST One of the many makeshift shelters housing people who survived the devastating wildfire in northern California is not a shelter at all, but rather a Walmart parking lot with a hundred-odd tents. One of the residents is Dustin Kimball, 44, who lost everything in the fire and now lives in a tent with four relatives as he tries to figure out what to do next. Kimball lived not far from the town of Paradise, which was devoured by the flames of the deadliest fire in California history. |

U.S. envoy for Iran warns EU banks, firms against non-dollar Iran trade Posted: 15 Nov 2018 05:52 AM PST European banks and firms who engage in a special European Union initiative to protect trade with Iran will be at risk from newly reimposed U.S. sanctions, the U.S. special envoy for Iran warned on Thursday. It is "no surprise" that EU efforts to establish a so-called Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for non-dollar trade with Iran were floundering over fear in EU capitals that hosting it would incur U.S. punishment, Special Representative Brian Hook said. |

The father of Rio Nanda Pratama filed the lawsuit Wednesday in the US state of Illinois, where the plane manufacturer is headquartered, over the death of the young doctor who was to have married his high-school sweetheart this week. U.S. imposes sanctions for Khashoggi killing, Saudis seek death penalty Posted: 15 Nov 2018 04:29 PM PST The U.S. Treasury Department sanctions were the first concrete response by the Trump administration to Khashoggi's death in the Saudi consulate in Turkey in October. Among those sanctioned were Saud al-Qahtani, who has been removed from his position as a top aide to the powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, as well as the Saudi Consul General Mohammad al-Otaibi and members of a 15-person team Turkey has identified as being involved. The measure was unusual for Washington, which rarely imposes sanctions on Saudi nationals. |

"They'll take a look at it and see if there's enough evidence to proceed." The celebrity news website TMZ, which broke the news of Avenatti's arrest, reported that it stemmed from a physical confrontation between him and a woman at an apartment building Tuesday night in the Century City district of Los Angeles. British PM fights rebellion over Brexit deal Posted: 16 Nov 2018 12:11 AM PST British Prime Minister Theresa May battled Friday to salvage a draft Brexit deal and her own political future. The Conservative leader said she believed with "every fibre of my being" in the Brexit course she had set, after facing a hostile parliament and seeing four ministers, including Brexit secretary Dominic Raab, quit the government. Florida Judge Cites 2000 to Stress Import of Close Votes Posted: 14 Nov 2018 06:50 PM PST During a five-hour hearing in Tallahassee on Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Mark Walker was urged by a lawyer for Democratic Senator Bill Nelson to count an estimated 5,000 affected ballots, while a lawyer for the Florida Secretary of State said the suit was filed too late and the law must be respected. Nelson aims to overcome a razor-thin vote deficit in the recount for his U.S. Senate race with Republican Governor Rick Scott, one of the most closely watched in the U.S. The margin forced an automatic recount, which triggered a spate of separate lawsuits in state courts further south. Walker, whose musings during the hearing touched on slavery, the Civil War, women's suffrage and the invasion of Iraq, ended the proceeding without ruling on Nelson's request for a court order requiring that the recount include all mail-in ballots rejected over signatures. |
