‘Our Dishonest President’: L.A. Times editorial eviscerates Trump Posted: 02 Apr 2017 12:59 PM PDT Since Donald Trump began his stunning ascent from real estate mogul and reality television star to wall-building, Muslim-ban-promising Republican candidate to GOP nominee to president, there have been plenty of piercing editorials about him and his policies. But perhaps none have been as scathing as the one published Sunday by the Los Angeles Times. |
Live updates: St. Petersburg metro explosion Posted: 03 Apr 2017 06:12 AM PDT At least 10 people were killed Monday in an explosion on a metro train in St. Petersburg, Russia, authorities there said. Russian President Vladimir Putin, who was in St. Petersburg for a meeting with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, said the cause of the blast was not clear. The Russian antiterrorism committee says it has found and deactivated a bomb at another St. Petersburg subway station. Reuters is providing live coverage of the explosion and its aftermath. Thousands march in Paris after Chinese man's death by police Posted: 02 Apr 2017 12:46 PM PDT About 6,000 people took part in angry protests in Paris on Sunday against the death of a Chinese man shot and killed when police responded to a call at his apartment last month, police said. The rally was organised by several Chinese associations in France, and as with previous rallies held over the past week, there were sporadic skirmishes between protesters and security forces. Some of the demonstrators threw bottles, eggs and fruit, prompting the police to respond with tear gas during clashes that lasted more than an hour, according to an AFP photographer. |
Dubai's sky turns black after another skyscraper bursts into flames Posted: 02 Apr 2017 12:34 PM PDT Black smoke smothered Dubai's sky on Sunday after a fire broke out near the world's tallest building. The desert metropolis looked almost apocalyptic as dark clouds rose from a high-rise tower complex being built alongside Dubai's biggest mall. SEE ALSO: How a drone helped firefighters battle a blaze in New York City No one was injured in the inferno, though three workers were rescued from inside the structure and taken to the hospital for examination, authorities said. Dramatic skyscraper blazes are a growing problem in Dubai and other rapidly developing parts of the United Arab Emirates. Most of Dubai's fires have been fueled by paneling on the sides of many buildings. The paneling, known as cladding, can be made with fire-resistant material. However, some Dubai buildings instead use quick-burning tiles, without any breaks to stop or slow a fire. Sunday's fire happened only a block away from The Address Downtown Dubai, a 63-story tower that caught fire on New Year's Eve on 2015. The world's tallest tower, a 2,717-foot-high structure called Burj Khalifa, is part of the Downtown Dubai development. عملية اطفاء حريق برج فونتن فيوز . . #سلامتكم_سعادتنا #دبي #الامارات #الامارات_العربية_المتحدة #997 #dubai #uae #dcd #dcd997 #dubai_civil_defenceالدفاع_المدني_دبي A post shared by الدفاع المدني دبي (@dcd997) on Apr 1, 2017 at 11:43pm PDT Officials with the Dubai Civil Defense described this week's fire as an "accident" that began in a parking level of The Address Residences Fountain Views complex. The 60-story structure will eventually connect to the massive Dubai Mall across the street. UAE authorities say they have changed fire safety rules in the territory to address the rising danger from burning buildings, but haven't offered many details. Trump insists GOP talks on replacing Obamacare are ongoing Posted: 02 Apr 2017 08:12 AM PDT A little more than a week after telling reporters he was moving on after failing to rally enough Republican support to repeal and replace Obamacare — and vowing to let former President Barack Obama's health care law "explode" — President Trump lashed out at the "fake news media" for casting the negotiations as dead. "Anybody (especially Fake News media) who thinks that Repeal & Replace of ObamaCare is dead does not know the love and strength in R Party!" Trump tweeted on Sunday. |

China to create new economic zone outside Beijing Posted: 02 Apr 2017 04:07 AM PDT China will create a new special economic zone outside Beijing similar to those established in Shenzhen and Shanghai, the government said, in a bid to boost flagging growth and reduce the strain on the capital. The Xiongan New Area, located some 100 kilometres (62 miles) southwest of downtown Beijing in Hebei province, will rival south China's Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, established in the 1980s, and Shanghai's Pudong New Area, set up in the 1990s. The move was a "major historic and strategic choice made by the CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping as the core" and would be "crucial for millennium to come", the official Xinhua news agency reported late Saturday. |
Prince Charles visits earthquake-hit Italian town Posted: 02 Apr 2017 06:33 AM PDT Britain's Prince Charles paid a visit on Sunday to one of the towns in central Italy devastated by a major earthquake last August, a day after locals protested against the government because of aid delays. The 6.2 magnitude earthquake killed nearly 300 people and destroyed thousands of homes and businesses. More than 45,000 aftershocks have rattled the region, including an even stronger 6.6 magnitude quake in October, the biggest to strike Italy for 36 years. |

Israel says not seeking Gaza 'adventures' after killing claim Posted: 02 Apr 2017 07:19 AM PDT Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman said Sunday Israel did not seek "adventures" in Gaza after Hamas accused it of assassinating an official, and suggested the group itself could have killed him. Hamas, which runs the Gaza Strip, has blamed Israeli intelligence agency Mossad and its "collaborators" for the March 24 killing of Mazen Faqha in the Palestinian territory. Israeli officials had previously not commented on the killing. |

Rescuers, locals dig for Colombia flood victims, at least 210 dead Posted: 02 Apr 2017 12:55 PM PDT By Jaime Saldarriaga MOCOA, Colombia (Reuters) - Families and rescuers searched desperately on Sunday through mud-plastered rubble for victims of flooding and landslides in Colombia that have killed at least 210 people, injured hundreds and devastated entire neighborhoods. Several rivers burst their banks near the southwestern city of Mocoa in the early hours of Saturday, sending water, mud and debris crashing down streets and into houses as people slept. Volunteers and firefighters tended to 82 bodies downstream in the town of Villagarzon and said many corpses were still caught in debris. |
Venezuela opposition turns ire on Supreme Court judges Posted: 02 Apr 2017 12:40 PM PDT By Andrew Cawthorne and Girish Gupta CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuela's opposition lawmakers said on Sunday they will push for the removal of Supreme Court judges whom they accuse of acting on behalf of the ruling Socialists after the top tribunal briefly assumed control of congress last week. While the move by the opposition-led congress would only be symbolic because it remains powerless, it could add to pressure on unpopular president Nicolas Maduro as he tries to defuse the furor over what critics saw as a lurch into dictatorship. The Supreme Court's ruling last week that it would take over functions of the National Assembly triggered international condemnation and opposition protests at home. |

Israel fears 'Iranian crescent' in Middle East Posted: 03 Apr 2017 09:20 AM PDT Israel fears an "Iranian crescent" may be forming in the Middle East because of Tehran's influence in Syria and its connections with regional Shiite groups, an intelligence official said Monday. The comments from Chagai Tzuriel, director general of Israel's intelligence ministry, illustrate his country's growing concerns over its arch-foe Iran's involvement in the conflict in neighbouring Syria. Iran's support for Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah, which also backs Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime, also concerns Israel, as does Tehran's influence in Iraq and its support for groups such as the Huthi rebels in Yemen. |
Emirates, Etihad to boost screening on Australia flights Posted: 03 Apr 2017 12:47 AM PDT Emirates and Etihad airlines will tighten screening for passengers flying to Australia this week after the country imposed new requirements for enhanced explosives detection, the UAE companies said Monday. Australia on Friday announced it would increase screening of passenger baggage on flights from Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, as well as Doha, Qatar. While the directive stops short of the sweeping electronics ban introduced last month by the United States and Britain, it may include targeted screening of passengers' personal electronic devices. |
Let’s hope the next Galaxy Note 8 looks better than this Posted: 02 Apr 2017 12:00 PM PDT Samsung is expected to launch three flagship smartphones this year, including the Galaxy S8 that's already available for preorder, the Galaxy X that's supposed to be its first foldable smartphone, and the Galaxy Note 8 phablet that's already confirmed to arrive in the second half of the year. However, Samsung does have a problem regarding the Galaxy Note 8. It already has one, and it's hideous. Almost four years ago, Samsung started selling the device below under the name Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0. By today's mobile design standards is simply hideous. Just look at those bezels... Launched at MWC 2013, the Galaxy Note 8.0 was part of Samsung's second generation of Note-branded tablets. The device shipped with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean on board and had an entry price of $399 (for the 16GB version). It may have been an attractive proposition at the time, though the Note series of tablets never saw the same popularity of the Note phones and was soon discontinued. Not many people might remember the Galaxy Note 8.0 tablet, but the device did exist. With that in mind, I can't help but wonder whether the tablet will affect in any way Samsung's naming scheme for the upcoming Galaxy Note 8 phablet. They may be four years apart, but we can't have two devices with almost the same name, can we? Samsung's DJ Koh confirmed earlier this year that the Note line will not be discontinued following the Galaxy Note 7 recall, and teased the Galaxy Note 7 will get a major upgrade. "I will bring back a better, safer and very innovative Note 8," Koh said. You don't suppose he meant the tablet, do you? |

New York, other states take on Trump over energy efficiency Posted: 03 Apr 2017 11:54 AM PDT By Jonathan Stempel NEW YORK (Reuters) - A coalition of U.S. states has mounted a broad legal challenge against what it called the Trump administration's illegal suspension of rules to improve the energy efficiency of ceiling fans, portable air conditioners and other products. The challenge, also joined by environmental groups, came after the U.S. Department of Energy last month delayed standards proposed under the Obama administration to reduce air pollution and operating costs associated with the products. Ten Democratic attorneys general, plus New York City and a Pennsylvania regulator, on Monday notified Energy Secretary Rick Perry of their plan to sue in 60 days for stalling proposed standards for air compressors, commercial boilers, portable air conditioners, power supplies, and walk-in coolers and freezers. |

Ecuador socialist wins presidency, rival cries fraud Posted: 03 Apr 2017 02:49 PM PDT Socialist Lenin Moreno declared himself the "president of all Ecuadorans" Monday after a runoff election win that will extend a decade of leftist rule, but his conservative rival refused to accept the result. Moreno, 64, a wheelchair user and champion of disability rights, is seen as a more moderate successor to outgoing President Rafael Correa. Whereas Correa declared "21st-century socialism" in Ecuador and regularly berated the United States, Moreno is known for cracking jokes and reaching out to opponents. |

Colombian police seize more than six tonnes of cocaine Posted: 02 Apr 2017 10:27 AM PDT BOGOTA (Reuters) - Colombian police have seized more than six tonnes of cocaine in the Caribbean city of Barranquilla, the defense minister said on Sunday. The shipment, the third-largest seizure in the history of continental Colombia, was found on Friday and belonged to several drug gangs, among them the so-called Urabenos, Defense Minister Luis Carlos Villegas told journalists. The shipment would have been worth about 200 million euros in Spain, its final destination. Authorities have already confiscated 103 tonnes of cocaine this year, the minister added.
