Las Vegas police recall moment they stormed Stephen Paddock's hotel room Posted: 09 Oct 2017 07:19 AM PDT Las Vegas police officers have recalled the "deadly game of hide and seek" they faced before storming gunman Stephen Paddock's hotel room. The ad-hoc SWAT team swooped on Paddock's Mandalay Bay room within 12 minutes of the 64-year-old unleashing a torrent of gunfire onto the outdoor Route 91 Harvest country music festival, killing 58 and injuring 489. They revealed how Paddock had barricaded shut a stairwell door on the 32nd floor of the hotel by screwing a piece of metal across it to prevent officers from reaching him and had also set up surveillance cameras outside his room. The first officers at the scene initially believed they could be dealing with multiple gunmen and also feared the room might have been booby-trapped, they told CBS News. "There's a room service cart with wires going on it underneath the door. There was something black on top of the cart. So initially I'm, you know, I'm thinking, 'This is a booby-trap. It's gonna explode'," explained Officer Dave Newton. "It turned out to be cameras on the food tray," he said. Stephen Paddock's killing spree left 59 people dead Credit: Eric Paddock via AP He recalled the suspect's door was just "riddled with bullet holes coming out". He said: "It looked like Swiss cheese". Inside the room, officers described seeing "so many guns" that his suite resembled an armoury or gun store. "So many magazines. Stacks and stacks of magazines everywhere. Just in suitcases all neatly stacked against pillars, around the room, all stacked up, rifles placed all throughout," added Officer Newton. "All kinds of monitors and electrical equipment he had in there. It just looked like almost a gun store." He described being inside the room as "very eerie", adding he spotted a note containing calculations to maximise kills and accuracy. 50 dead in Las Vegas shooting, in pictures "I did notice a note on the nightstand near his shooting platform," said Officer Newton. "I could see on it he had written the distance, the elevation he was on, the drop of what his bullet was gonna be for the crowd. So he had had that written down and figured out so he would know where to shoot to hit his targets from there. "He ... must have done the calculations online or something to figure out what his altitude was going to be and how high up he was-- how far out the crowd was going to be and what at that distance and what the drop of his bullet was going to be. He hadn't written out the calculations all he had was written out the final numbers that were on the sheet." By the time the officers had entered the room, Paddock had already committed suicide. Las Vegas Sheriff Joseph Lombardo the team "prevented a thousand deaths" by getting to Paddock's room within 12 minutes. |
Moscow says US 'pretending' to fight IS in Iraq Posted: 10 Oct 2017 09:43 AM PDT Moscow accused the US on Tuesday of reducing air strikes against the Islamic State group in Iraq to let jihadists into Syria and fight the Russian-backed Syrian army, claims the Pentagon denied. Russian military spokesman Igor Konashenkov said the Syrian regime was attempting to push the jihadists out of eastern Deir Ezzor province, but that arrivals from Iraq were boosting their numbers. "The US-led coalition, pretending to fight IS, largely in Iraq, sees all this but continues allegedly active measures against IS in Syria for some reason," he said. |
Nigerian VP Osinbajo says running for presidency not 'on the cards' Posted: 09 Oct 2017 03:05 AM PDT By Libby George and Karin Strohecker LONDON (Reuters) - Nigeria's Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who has served as acting president for much of this year, said on Monday he had not given any thought to contesting the country's next presidential election in 2019. Nigeria has faced heightened uncertainty over whether President Muhammadu Buhari plans to contest the next election. Buhari, 74, took power in 2015 but has been absent for much of this year due to illness. |

Stärke Revolution Speedster to offer the best of both worlds Posted: 09 Oct 2017 09:25 AM PDT US automotive coachbuilder Stärke wants to re-box the Porsche Boxster as a visual homage to the iconic Porsche 356 Speedster -- just don't call the finished car a restomod. Instead, the Stärke Revolution Speedster, which is set to make its global debut on October 20 in Las Vegas, has been dubbed by its creators -- father and son team Wade E and Maxwell Morrison -- as a restobod. Because rather than take a 1950s Porsche and update its engine, suspension brakes and steering for the 21st century (and in doing so destroy its value on the collector car market), the company starts with a modern Porsche Boxster that it meticulously re-bodies and re-trims so that on initial inspection, it looks just like a classic Porsche. |

California burning: Historic fires break out from Sonoma to SoCal Posted: 09 Oct 2017 07:47 AM PDT Wildfires broke out Sunday night and Monday in California's prized wine country, advancing with stunning, and potentially deadly, speed across the dry and gusty Napa and Sonoma Valleys. A total of 14 fires in northern California had destroyed about 1,500 structures as of Monday morning, local time, putting this event as among the most destructive in state history. At least one death has been reported, along with an unknown number of injuries, based on local media reports. Winds gusting to 55 miles per hour fanned the flames in Napa and Sonoma County overnight. CalFire Battalion Chief Jonathan Cox told KTVU on Monday that the Tubbs Fire, located between Santa Rosa and Calistoga, "exploded" in size overnight, from 200 to 20,000 acres. SEE ALSO: How to prepare for natural disasters "It was an inferno like you've never seen before," Marian Williams, who escaped the Tubbs Fire before dawn near the town of Kenwood, told the Associated Press. "Trees were on fire like torches," she said. During the day on Monday, other destructive fires broke out in southern California, as well. Aerial video footage from KTVU showed numerous homes burning or destroyed in Santa Rosa. Entire neighborhoods, at least two hospitals, and senior centers in northwestern Santa Rosa were reportedly evacuated. As Windsor Fire Chief Jack Piccinini told the publication, Sonoma County is struggling due to a lack of resources needed to fight fires of this magnitude. Neighboring counties have been sending equipment and crews to help fight the blazes. Marin County, for example, sent 22 fire engines, along with 5 ambulances, as well as numerous crews to assist the effort. This fire is horrific. Cars, buildings destroyed. Untold homes pic.twitter.com/XDl1UhtJY3 — Jill Tucker (@jilltucker) October 9, 2017 "Everyone in Sonoma County is spread out fighting these fires, but they don't have enough resources to handle something like this. The only thing we can do is hope the wind will come down," Piccinini told the paper . The rapid speed of these fires raises the potential for casualties, given that residents had little time to flee the flames. The Santa Rosa Fire Department tweeted that the fire had grown to 20,000 acres — which is astonishing considering the fires broke out mere hours before. Wildfires broke out Monday in Anaheim, forcing evacuations of entire neighborhoods. October has long been associated with California's worst wildfires, particularly in southern California, where Santa Ana winds tend to develop more frequently than at other times of year. This is also the end of the dry season in the state, when vegetation tends to be most ready to ignite. Larger-scale trends are amplifying wildfire risks across the West, as well. We're building more in areas that border forested lands where fires are commonplace, for example. Global warming is also helping to make larger fires more common across the West in particular, as spring snow cover melts earlier, and forests dry out more than they used to during the dry season. In the West, the 2017 wildfire season has been unusually severe, with 8.5 million acres burned to date, compared to the 10-year average of about 6 million by this time. Canada has also had an unusually severe wildfire season, with numerous large blazes torching millions of acres in British Columbia and Alberta, in particular. Israel says Hezbollah runs Lebanese army, signaling both are foes Posted: 10 Oct 2017 08:28 AM PDT By Dan Williams JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel said on Tuesday that the Hezbollah guerrilla group, its most potent enemy in neighboring Lebanon, had gained control over that country's U.S.-sponsored conventional military, signaling both would be in Israeli gunsights in any future war. Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman's remarks were a hard tack from more measured recent Israeli estimates that the Lebanese army maintained autonomy even if some of its troops cooperated with the better-armed, Iranian-aligned guerrillas. Outlining potential threats in Lebanon, where Israel last fought a war against Hezbollah in 2006, Lieberman said in a speech: "We are no longer talking about Hezbollah alone". |

"The best way to pay tribute to Che is to continue his struggle, an anti-imperialist struggle," the socialist Morales told an audience including Guevara's brothers and four children in the mountain town of Vallegrande in central Bolivia. The ceremony capped five days of special remembrance of the Argentine-born revolutionary in Bolivia, whose government ordered his execution on October 9, 1967, a day after he was wounded and captured in a firefight with a special CIA-trained unit of the Bolivian army. |
