All hail Roy Moore at 'pro-family' rally, while accusations pile up Posted: 16 Nov 2017 02:11 PM PST A "pro-family" rally in Birmingham, Ala., featured tributes to embattled Senate candidate Roy Moore by a parade of supporters — including one with a stalking conviction and one who has blamed Hurricane Sandy on gay marriage – but no comments from Moore himself on the latest accusations against him. After two hours of speeches, Moore gave a brief address before the host invited questions on "issues" from the assembled press. The first question was if Moore had ever touched young women without their consent and if he dated teenagers when he was in his 30s. |

Injured defector's parasites and diet hint at hard life in N.Korea Posted: 17 Nov 2017 04:13 AM PST Parasitic worms found in a North Korean soldier, critically injured during a desperate defection, highlight nutrition and hygiene problems that experts say have plagued the isolated country for decades. At a briefing on Wednesday, lead surgeon Lee Cook-jong displayed photos showing dozens of flesh-coloured parasites - including one 27 cm (10.6 in) long - removed from the wounded soldier's digestive tract during a series of surgeries to save his life. The parasites, along with kernels of corn in his stomach, may confirm what many experts and previous defectors have described about the food and hygiene situation for many North Koreans. |

School cancels Muslim speaker after teacher organising presentation receives threats Posted: 16 Nov 2017 06:03 PM PST A teacher at Northeastern Middle School in Bristol, Connecticut, had invited a local Muslim woman to speak about her faith and sent a note to parents informing them of the event. The letter, which was posted online, introduced the speaker as a New York City native who resided in Connecticut and had founded an organisation devoted to "empowerment of Muslim women". In a statement to NBC, Bristol Public Schools superintendent Susan Kalt Moreau said despite the cancellation "there was an outpouring of support for bringing a speaker in to support our curriculum which includes religions of the world". |

Mnangagwa: Zimbabwe's 'Comeback Crocodile'? Posted: 17 Nov 2017 03:51 AM PST Emmerson Mnangagwa appeared well-placed to reprise his leading role in Zimbabwe after returning to the country in the wake of the army's takeover, prompted by his sacking by President Robert Mugabe. Nicknamed "Ngwena" (The Crocodile) because of his fearsome power and ruthlessness, the 75-year-old has a reputation for taking no prisoners -- but appeared to have been outfoxed by Grace Mugabe. It was the climax of a long feud between Grace and Mugabe's then deputy to be in pole position to replace the ailing leader when he died or retired. |

FCC scraps media rules preventing one company from dominating local news Posted: 16 Nov 2017 03:45 PM PST The Federal Communications Commission has voted to scrap rules that prohibited companies from owning multiple news sources in a single region. Commissioners moved to eliminate the rules on a 3-2 vote, overriding objections that the move would clear the way for greater consolidation in a media industry that is increasingly dominated by a handful of large players. "We have paved the way for a new crop of media broadcast empires," said Commissioner Mignon Clyburn, who voted against the move, adding that doing away with the rules would "amplify the influence of a small number of companies". |
