| Russian Sailors Sunbathe While Their Ship Almost Collides with US Missile Cruiser Posted: 07 Jun 2019 09:30 PM PDT  After Russian and American warships nearly collided in the East China Sea on Friday, both countries were quick to accuse the other of "dangerous and unprofessional" behavior, according to a June 7 report by Reuters.One detail that hasn't come up, but totally should, is why a bunch of Russian sailors were chilling on the deck of the Russian destroyer Admiral Vinogradov when the vessel came within 50 to 165 feet of the USS Chancellorsville, a Navy guided-missile cruiser. (The exact distance between the two vessels is unclear, as both the U.S. and Russian navies are citing different figures.)The sun-bathing sailors were first spotted by CNN correspondent Barbara Starr on Twitter.And others quickly joined in to speculate on why sailors were kicking back in lawn chairs and catching some rays, instead of, you know, manning their posts or swabbing the poop deck, or whatever the Russian naval equivalent is.According to Reuters, Russia's Pacific fleet claims that the Chancellorsville came within 165 feet of the Russian Udaloy-class destroyer, and that the Russian vessel was forced to take measures to avoid a collision."A protest over the international radio frequency was made to the commanders of the American ship who were warned about the unacceptable nature of such actions," reads a statement from Russia's Pacific fleet, provided to Reuters.

Well, if you happen to live in the United Kingdom, today is your lucky day!Compass Pools, a UK-based pool maker, is currently hashing out what it calls the "Infinity London," a 55-story skyscraper topped with a 360-degree pool with transparent walls. The building, which was designed from top to bottom by the company, will include a five-star hotel, and the pool is expected to be the main attraction.Making a pool suitable for sticking atop a 55-story building posed some serious technical hurdles for the company, but they think they've got it all figured out. Rather than glass, the entire pool will be made of acrylic, with a transparent bottom that will allow visitors on lower floors to see the pool and swimmers high above.Getting into and out of the pool would be easy with some kind of external staircase, but the building's designers didn't want to clutter the side profile of the structure with such things. "Normally a simple ladder would suffice, but we didn't want stairs on the outside of the building or in the pool as it would spoil the view - and obviously you don't want 600,000 litres of water draining through the building either," the company says.Compass Pools came up with a different idea, which they say is based on the airlock of a submarine. It's described as "a rotating spiral staircase" that will "[rise] from the pool floor when someone wants to get in or out." The company says the Infinity London could be under construction as early as 2020 "if all the partners and contractors are confirmed."It's all incredibly strange and awesome and terrifying at the same time. The company, which calls the experience "death-defying swimming," is clearly betting that plenty of people will be willing to take the chance.

Two teenagers walked into the Colorado high school and shot dead 12 students and a teacher in April 1999. But two decades on, local authorities have proposed tearing down and rebuilding the school because the building has remained "a source of inspiration" for people with a dark interest in the shooting Jason Glass, the Jefferson County School District superintendent, wrote to parents saying people use Columbine as "a macabre source of inspiration". Hundreds of people try to enter the school every year, with the number growing to "record levels" in the past 11 months as the 20th anniversary approached, he said. Mr Glass highlighted the most recent high-profile incident - when a Florida teenager infatuated with the massacre travelled to the area in April and made threats to local schools before taking her own life. "In 1999, no guidance existed on what to do with a building such as Columbine High School," his letter stated. "Today school safety experts recommend tearing down buildings where school shootings take place. "Since the morbid fascination with Columbine has been increasing over the years, we believe it is time for our community to consider this option for the existing Columbine building." The school district also released an online survey to gauge community support for a measure earmarking $60 to $70 million for a Columbine reconstruction project. | This is the coolest new Google Search feature we’ve seen in years Posted: 07 Jun 2019 11:48 AM PDT  Google often adds useful tools and productivity features to its various apps and services, but some of the best are more fun than they are useful. Such is the case for the latest addition to Google Search: AR animals. As the company announced at its Google I/O developer conference in May, some search results will now include 3D augmented reality models that users can interact with. And now the first of those AR models have begun to roll out.First spotted by CNET, the feature is now available for Android phones equipped with ARCore and iPhone models that can take advantage of ARKit. For the time being, the only compatible searches are for animals, including sharks, tigers, cats, Shetland ponies, brown bears, and even a macaw. CNET's Scott Stein put together a Twitter thread of a half dozen or so animals that he discovered, but there are likely more if you're willing to search.If you want to check out the feature for yourself, just head to your mobile browser of choice (I used Chrome on my iPhone 8), and search for an animal in Google Search. As long as the animal is one that Google has created a model for, you can scroll down to find the model in the card for the animal. I was 18. I knew I was gay. I was working at my father's little deli, Morry's Deli on Chicago Avenue, off Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago. And this black woman comes in [whose name Orman cannot recall], and she said, "Suze, it's about time we talked." And I'm looking at her, like, "What are you talking about?" And she said, "I can tell that you're gay." And I went, "OK." And she said, "I want you to come to an event on the University of Illinois at Chicago campus. An event just happened in New York by the name of Stonewall." And I hadn't heard about it until she said something. I said, "What is a stone wall?"Want To Feel Gay Pride? Go HereShe said, "There was a group of people who are finally taking back their rights and they are gay. We've been dealing with this on the university campus for a while now. We're going to have a formal meeting, and I think you would really enjoy coming."She used to come in every day and I would wait on her.We had a little flirtation, back and forth, but then I flirted with everyone—all women—back then. It didn't matter.She picked up on me being gay. But up until that point, I had never verbally really ever said to anybody, "I'm gay." People had their suspicions. My best friends had a suspicion. But they never said anything. Even though it was obvious I had crushes on all these women all the time.I said to her, "How do you expect me to get to this meeting?"She said, "I'll pick you up and I'll take you."She took me. What was interesting about it for me was that it was almost all men. There were very few women, if at all. I loved being there, whatever. That was the summer of 1969. I was 18.Then I went to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. That first year or second year—I can't remember which one it was—I started to go to Gay Liberation meetings. Again, they were all almost all men. I was one of a few women that were there. I had a very difficult time relating to how the men were being gay because they were all talking about dating this one and sleeping with another. As a woman, I was like "I don't think so." I wanted to meet a woman and not sleep with all these other women.In 1970 or 1971, I opened up a gay women's house on the University of Illinois at Chicago campus. Four of us lived there. We started to hold meetings for just women. Stonewall was absolutely the beginning of people being able to speak up and go for it. All through college I would go to little towns like Paxton, Illinois, to give talks about being gay. I was quite radical back then as you would expect me to be.What is the significance of the Stonewall Riots for you now?That was the beginning of me being able to be me. In 1973, I left Illinois and moved to the San Francisco area. I came home with a girlfriend in 1974, and my mom and dad, my whole family, was there. I was talking to my aunt and uncle, and they asked why I had moved to San Francisco. I said, "So I can be gay, it's a lot easier to be gay there than anywhere else." Everybody was like, "What are you talking about?" I thought everyone knew. That was my coming out, without me even knowing I was coming out. If Stonewall never happened, that woman would not have come into Morry's deli and said, "Suze, let's go to this thing." And I would never have been surrounded by other gay people like that. It was the first time I was surrounded by gay people. I was the only gay person I knew.The Stonewall Riots were my entrée into being introduced to other gay people, and if that hadn't happened, who knows what would have happened?Do you remember the first time visiting the Stonewall Inn itself?Yes, years later in 1980. I didn't have the exact address. I became a stockbroker. I went to Greenwich Village every night just to be able to walk around by myself and to be around gay people. Back then you couldn't google it. Everybody had different stories about where it was. But eventually I found it.Back then, gay bars were so essential to the culture of being gay; the White Horse Inn in Champaign-Urbana was our savior, the place you could absolutely just feel normal. The things went on in that bar were so amazing. I remember one guy looking very familiar. It was one of my professors, wearing a toupée. He was married with kids.They pushed LGBT people too far at Stonewall that night, thank god.Things also happened in Chicago when it came to people making a stand in terms of gay liberation, but no one talked about it. The focus was on New York and San Francisco.How far have LGBT people come since 1969?We should feel very nervous about Trump, but honest to God, I never thought in my lifetime I would be able, in the United States of America, to say I'm married (to Kathy "KT" Travis) and for it to be legal. We married in South Africa in 2010, and a year or two later I said on Piers Morgan's TV show that if marriage equality wasn't legalized in America within the next 10 years I would give up my citizenship. There was no way I was paying millions of dollars in taxes and everything else to a country that does not recognize me. Thank God I didn't have to do it. But I was willing to back it up.We've come so far. I was talking to my niece, who has three kids, and I said one of them might be gay. She said that she hoped so.I never take any of the progress for granted. Never in a million years would I have believed we would get Mayor Pete (Buttigieg), who will hopefully be nominee for president of the United States on the Democrat side. If anybody can do it he can do it.What would you like to see, LGBT-wise, in the next 50 years?I would like everybody to be who they are and not be labeled gay, straight, queer, and transgender. I would like them to be "Suze," "Tim," and "KT"—and that's it. And not even think about it anymore, for it just to be how it is.Hopefully the right people get voted in, and we achieve legal equality. Even more important are people's attitudes. You can have all the laws protecting us, and still have somebody hit you or shoot you. My dream is that the laws are there to protect us, and years and years from now people will protect and respect one another as human beings, in terms of race, sexuality, gender, nationality, and religion—that we are all just seen as God's people.What would you say today to the woman who came to the deli if you could, and to the Stonewall demonstrators?Right now, I have goosebumps in my arms and legs and tears in my eyes. | Joe Biden Embraces Taxpayer-Funded Abortion Posted: 07 Jun 2019 09:17 AM PDT  Democratic front-runner Joe Biden has twisted himself in knots on the issue of taxpayer funding of elective abortion over the past few weeks.After four decades of supporting the Hyde amendment, a measure that bans federal funding of abortion under Medicaid except in rare circumstances, Biden told an ACLU activist in May that it should be repealed.Then, on Wednesday, two weeks after the media publicized his change of heart, the Biden campaign issued a statement saying that he still supports the Hyde amendment, claiming that he had simply "misheard" the ACLU activist when he said otherwise.Yesterday, after 24 hours of being pummeled by his rivals, the media, and pro-abortion groups, Biden declared that he had decided after all to oppose the Hyde amendment because states such as Alabama and Georgia are now attempting to ban most abortions. "If I believe health care is a right, as I do, I can no longer support an amendment that makes that right dependent on someone's zip code," Biden said at an event in Atlanta.As a matter of politics, all the flipping and flopping and flipping yet again is a particularly bad case of political malpractice. On June 5, the Biden campaign's statement portrayed the candidate as a confused old man who couldn't tell the difference between the words "Hyde amendment" and "Mexico City policy." On June 6, Biden presented himself as a craven old man whose decades-long conviction on a matter of conscience couldn't withstand a day of criticism.Biden managed to enrage pro-abortion and left-wing activists just before dashing the hopes of moderates. He raised the visibility of the issue of Medicaid funding of abortion — a policy American voters oppose 58 percent to 36 percent, according to a 2016 poll conducted for Harvard — before deciding to take the unpopular side. For all the confusion Biden caused about his own position, his caving sent a very clear message that pro-life Democrats and those with moderate views on abortion will not be tolerated in the Democratic party.As a matter of policy, Biden's final decision to embrace extensive taxpayer funding for abortion is a moral disgrace. Before the passage of the Hyde amendment, Medicaid paid for an estimated 300,000 abortions annually. The Hyde amendment has saved the lives of more than 2 million human beings over the last four decades, according to a recent study by the Charlotte Lozier Institute. An earlier study from the Guttmacher Institute found that where states use their tax dollars to fund abortion under Medicaid, women on Medicaid had an abortion rate four times that of women not on Medicaid. (In states that do not fund abortion, women on Medicaid were 1.6 times as likely as women not on Medicaid to have abortions.)That poor women have abortion rates much higher than wealthier women is a good thing in the eyes of some on the left. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg once said she was surprised that the Supreme Court didn't declare a right to taxpayer funding of abortion for Medicaid recipients in 1980 because "at the time Roe was decided, there was concern about population growth and particularly growth in populations that we don't want to have too many of."The phrase "populations we don't want to have too many of" is a eugenicist euphemism for "poor Americans." If you care to know what poor Americans think about the taxpayer funding of abortion, they don't want it. While 45 percent of voters earning more than $75,000 support Medicaid funding of abortion, only 24 percent of those making $25,000 or less support it.When Biden and the rest of the Democratic presidential candidates portray repeal of the Hyde amendment as helping poor Americans, know that it is a lie. Our fellow Americans need our help. Government subsidies to abort their children is something they can live without.

The basic design of a Glock pistol has changed very little from the original Generation 1 Glock: the majority of changes through the generations are slight changes to the trigger layout and the addition of rails and other ergonomic features. This has led some to say that Glock cannot innovate.However, the Glock 46 stands as a stark counterpoint to those who say so. Utilizing a rotating barrel system and a redesigned striker system, the Glock 46 is a total rethinking of the Glock design, different in almost every way.The rotating barrel likely makes the Glock 46 softer shooting than its tilting barrel counterparts. Other pistols with rotating barrels, such as Beretta's Px4, Grand Power's K100, and Archon/Arsenal's Stryk B all are known for their pleasant recoil. It also provides some accuracy benefits. Glock's approach to the rotating barrel appears to address some concerns leveled at other pistols with rotating barrels, which can be difficult to field strip. Glock's barrel appears to put two camming pins on the barrel itself, as opposed to the Px4 which places a camming surface on the barrel itself. The change in the placement of the rotating parts could make the Glock 46's field strip simpler than some of its rotating barrel competition.

| US detaining hundreds of African migrants at border after 'dramatic rise' in arrivals Posted: 07 Jun 2019 01:33 AM PDT  Hundreds of African migrants have been arrested in Texas after a "dramatic rise" in arrivals at the southern US border, according to patrol agents.More from 500 people from African countries were detained near the frontier city of Del Rio in the past week, said US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), which warned of a "humanitarian crisis".Most were families from the Republic of the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Angola."The introduction of this new population places additional burdens on processing stations, to include language and cultural differences," said Del Rio sector chief patrol agent Raul Ortiz.The recent arrivals included a group of 116 migrants detained after arriving at the southern US border late on 30 May."This large group from Africa further demonstrates the complexity and severity of the border security and humanitarian crisis at our southwest border," Mr Ortiz added.At least 300 African migrants have also travelled on to San Antonio, Texas, about 150 miles from Del Rio, with hundreds more expected in the next few days.San Antonio's city government has opened two support centres for those travelling and is working with local charities to provide food and emergency shelter.The city is "in desperate need" of French-speaking volunteers, according to Jaleesa Irizarry, a reporter for local TV news station KENS 5.Speakers of Portuguese and Lingala, a Bantu language used across much of the Congo, are also needed to provide translation services.It is not clear exactly what routes the African migrants are taking the reach the US.But some have told NPR they flew from Nairobi, Kenya, to Brazil before heading north through Colombia and Central America on a journey that took several months.More than 4.5 million people have been displaced by multiple conflicts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where the United Nations Refugee Agency says there is "one of the most complex and challenging humanitarian situations worldwide".Refugees face months-long waits for asylum applications to be processed at the US border, with illegal crossings increasing after Donald Trump threatened the close the border with Mexico.So far this year more than 33,000 people have been arrested in the Del Rio area after entering the country, more than double the figure for the whole of the last financial year.About a fifth were migrants from Mexico, with the remaining 80 per cent originating from 38 other countries.

If this latest Galaxy Note 10 leak ends up being accurate, the answer is a resounding no.Samsung's Galaxy Note series smartphones are never as popular as Galaxy S phones, but they still always seem to have just as much hype surrounding their launches. Such is the case with the Galaxy Note 10, which will likely be unveiled in about two months. The Galaxy Note 9 and other recent Note phones have basically been slightly modified Galaxy S Plus handsets with a squared off design and the signature S Pen stylus stowed away inside them. Beyond that, they feature the same specs and the same general design as Samsung's Galaxy S Plus phone from the same year. In 2019, however, it looks like that's going to change.Samsung will reportedly release not one but two new Galaxy Note 10 phones this year, or even three if you count the 5G version as a separate phone. The Galaxy S10+ matched the Note 9 with its $999 base price, but now Samsung is about to push things even farther. According to a new leak from Russian tech blog hi-tech, the Galaxy Note 10 Pro will have a base price of between $1,100 and $1,200 when it's released in August... and that's the version without 5G!It's difficult to think of a phone as "entry-level" when it'll probably cost around $1,000, but the entry-level Note 10 might be the way to go this year, especially if the Galaxy Note 10 Pro comes in at the high end of that leaked price range. Then the flight director in the control room issues a command: "Push the red button." The rocket then self-destructs.But the U.S. Navy has another idea: let the rocket decide when to blow itself up.More specifically, the Navy is concerned about what happens during test firings of submarine-launched ballistic missiles, such as the Trident, from ballistic missile submarines. If the missile goes off course, flight termination systems, or FTS, are supposed to allow the rocket to be destroyed. "The FTS provides a means to prevent the missile from traveling outside the approved range boundaries, should the missile suffer an anomaly during the test event," says the Navy research announcement. "Historically, FTS have included a remote command (human-in-the-loop) destruct capability that required significant range assets to monitor the missile's flight path. The command destruct portion of FTS relied on a human-in-the-loop to send a radio signal to destroy the missile, should it become unstable or deviate excessively from its expected flight path."
