Chicago's back-to-school season comes with gang protections for kids Posted: 08 Sep 2015 12:54 PM PDT By Fiona Ortiz CHICAGO (Reuters) - Teachers are being laid off as the Chicago Public Schools district deals with a massive financial crisis. The school district has expanded the six-year-old Safe Passage program to seven additional schools this year, bringing it to a total of 140 of Chicago's 660 public schools. With 304 murders so far this year, up 18 percent from the same period last year, and 1,588 shooting incidents, up 17 percent, Chicago is one of the most dangerous big cities in the United States. |
Venezuelan schools to mark Chavez's birth, death Posted: 08 Sep 2015 11:27 AM PDT The Venezuelan government issued a decree Tuesday instructing schools to hold events to commemorate the anniversaries of socialist leader Hugo Chavez's birth and death. The new curriculum requirement, which applies to both public and private schools, stipulates that they must organize activities for students each year to mark Chavez's birthday on July 28, 1954 and death on March 5, 2013. Since then, the government of Nicolas Maduro, his handpicked successor, has erected a cult of personality around the late leftist firebrand. |

Oil train risks affect many U.S. schools, group says Posted: 08 Sep 2015 04:10 AM PDT Thousands of U.S. schools sit along rail corridors used to carry toxic substances such as crude oil and would be at risk in the event of a derailment, an environmental group said on Tuesday as it called for a temporary halt on oil trains. ForestEthics said its analysis of U.S. Department of Education data show nearly 15,000 schools with 5.7 million students sit inside the so-called 'blast zone', the one-mile area along railroad tracks the U.S. Department of Transportation (DoT) recommends be evacuated in case of crashes. |
