Chicago's back-to-school season comes with gang protections for kids

The school district has expanded the six-year-old Safe Passage program to seven additional schools this year, bringing it to a total of 140 of Chicago's 660 public schools. With 304 murders so far this year, up 18 percent from the same period last year, and 1,588 shooting incidents, up 17 percent, Chicago is one of the most dangerous big cities in the United States.


Venezuelan schools to mark Chavez's birth, death

The new curriculum requirement, which applies to both public and private schools, stipulates that they must organize activities for students each year to mark Chavez's birthday on July 28, 1954 and death on March 5, 2013. Since then, the government of Nicolas Maduro, his handpicked successor, has erected a cult of personality around the late leftist firebrand.

ForestEthics said its analysis of U.S. Department of Education data show nearly 15,000 schools with 5.7 million students sit inside the so-called 'blast zone', the one-mile area along railroad tracks the U.S. Department of Transportation (DoT) recommends be evacuated in case of crashes.
