Posted: 23 Oct 2017 03:34 AM PDT A 15-year-old girl in Australia was thrown off her kayak by a 15-foot shark which then hunted her in "spine-chilling" scenes likened to those in Jaws. Sarah Williams was tossed into the air when a shark hit her kayak while paddling alongside her family in the state of South Australia. As the predator repeatedly circled and hit the kayak, she was hauled onto a boat by her brother, who lifted her over the deadly great white shark. The teenager escaped with minor injuries, saying the attack was "everything you picture in the Jaws movie". "I saw it when I was in the water with it," she told Channel Nine. "I saw what it was and I saw its fin." It was going to eat her... The difference between my daughter being alive and not being with me today is 10 seconds Chris Williams, her father, said the shark was "ferocious" and should be hunted and killed. "Sarah — she had been thrown into the air and just come down into the water, and this shark has just rolled and all I saw was the dark side and the white belly and just huge fins and just white water everywhere," he told ABC Radio. "It was going to eat her... The difference between my daughter being alive and not being with me today is 10 seconds. It's something I don't ever want to experience again." He added: "To hear the spine- chilling screams from your daughter is just indescribable." The 15-foot shark threw the young girl off her kayak while she was paddling next to her family's motor boat Credit: 7 news Adrienne Clarke, the teenager's mother, said the shark continued to attack the family's small motor boat after Sarah was pulled into it. "The shark then followed the kayak while it was roped to our motorised boat for about ten minutes trying to come back at it, but eventually gave up," she told ABC News. "My son, who was in the motorised boat, said it was the same length as the kayak… The worst thing that has come of it is she has lost her phone and her sound system, and she's gone home with both of her legs." About | Shark attacks Australia has had a growing number of shark attacks in recent years, including several fatalities. The attack in South Australia prompted calls for a cull – a move resisted by the state government. "The question of culls is a complex one," said Jay Weatherill, the state premier. "It's difficult to create a system of culling which doesn't implicate other species such as turtles, dolphins and other marine animals." Surf Life Saving authorities urged the public to alert emergency services as soon as sharks are sighted and to do so before posting images on social media. |

Republicans in House launch probe of Russia deal involving U.S. uranium Posted: 24 Oct 2017 11:51 AM PDT Republican leaders of two committees in the U.S. House of Representatives launched an investigation on Tuesday into the purchase by a Russian firm several years ago of a Canadian company that owned some 20 percent of U.S. uranium supplies. Some Republicans have claimed that Hillary Clinton's State Department approved the deal after her husband's charitable foundation received a $145 million donation, but the State Department controls only one seat on the panel that approved the transaction and the New York Times has reported that Clinton did not participate in the decision. |
British man tells of his terrifying five-mile swim for his life - pursued by a 13-foot shark Posted: 23 Oct 2017 01:08 AM PDT A British diver separated from his boat off the coast of Australia has said he was lucky to be alive after being forced to swim miles back to shore - shadowed by a large tiger shark. The spear fisherman, John Craig, was underwater off Western Australia state Friday when his boat was swept away due to engine problems and strong currents. He told the BBC that sharks gravitated towards him because stress had raised his heart rate. Mr Craig said: "I could feel my heart rate up, because I was panicking that I'd been left, after about five or ten minutes of this I put my head in the water to check I was still in the same place, and then at arm's reach, there was this huge four-meter tiger shark, I turned around and there was another fairly big sandbar whaler, which is another type of shark that you get here." A diver separated from his boat off the coast of Australia was followed by a large tiger shark He told local media the tiger shark was "easily the biggest tiger shark I've been in the water with and that's saying something having worked as a dive instructor for over 10 years." Terrified in the shark-infested waters near Shark Bay, he made the decision to swim back to shore. "I have to admit that at this point I thought I was gone - four nautical miles out to sea with a huge tiger shark following me. I thought this was it, this is how I'm going to die," he said. "The shark would disappear into the gloom then suddenly reappear behind me, just keeping pace with me behind my fins." Diver's close encounter with shark in Western Australia He spoke of how the shark pursued him, trying to kill him: "The shark didn't swim away, it actually followed me, so I started swimming towards the shore and the shark just kept pace behind me, so every time I looked back I just saw its huge head pointed at my fins, so I just kept my spear gun pointed towards my fins so it wouldn't get close enough to actually touch them, then it would disappear in the gloom then come down and come up below me and come from the sides...it was all because I was panicking. "I've been a dive instructor for ten years, and I knew straight away sharks were there because my heart rate was up and I was panicking. After about three or four minutes of swimming it just accelerated then started swimming beside me going towards the shore. So for about 15 minutes it was just swimming with me." Mr Craig kept his speargun pointed behind him as he embarked on a swim of "pure endurance", eventually losing the shark. He was later spotted by rescuers on a remote beach. "It's an absolutely incredible story," Shark Bay Volunteer Marine Rescue commander Greg Ridgley told Perth's Sunday Times. Tiger sharks shown here off the coast of Port Elizabeth, South Africa Credit: Rainer Schimpf / Barcroft Media "He swam at least five miles in shark-infested waters... I just can't believe anybody could do that. It's such a massive effort, in that short timeframe too." There have been 14 encounters off the nation's vast coastline this year, including the death of a 17-year-old girl mauled by a shark in full view of her parents in Western Australia. Experts say incidents are increasing as water sports become more popular and baitfish move closer to shore, but fatalities remain rare. |

Rescue dog uses his smile to help find a forever home Posted: 24 Oct 2017 12:33 PM PDT Though City of Waller Animal Shelter and Rescue in Waller, Texas won't open for another two-and-a-half weeks, one shelter pup is already swimming in adoption offers. Cheech, a pup who entered the shelter on Thursday, has pulled in a ton of attention for the pet shelter thanks to the dog's massive, toothy grin, KSAT reports. Photos of the "smiling" rescue first appeared on the shelter's Facebook page on Thursday, and more were posted on Friday. Those photos have since been shared more than 5,800 times. SEE ALSO: Get your fluffy cat snuggles without the cat The post was such a success that the shelter issued an update with background on their facility (it was started by a group of first responders), and a link to a pet adoption form for those looking to take Cheech home. Naturally, the applications rolled in. "Cheech has MANY applications turned in, however we have tons of great homeless pups available," an update to the the post reads. Per a later update, one prospective applicant even phoned the County Sheriff's Office in hopes of learning more about the dog, a practice the shelter advises against. They've even shared follow-up posts encouraging applicants to consider other rescue dogs staying with the shelter. Still, the Cheech updates keep coming: A new update from the shelter said that application reviews for Cheech began Monday. Good luck to the applicants – the competition sounds stiff. Raila Odinga: Kenya's opposition scion makes final gamble Posted: 23 Oct 2017 08:07 PM PDT Raila Odinga, Kenya's veteran opposition leader and one-time prime minister, has chosen to sit out Thursday's presidential election re-run, a move that may well end his dream of winning the nation's top job. The 72-year-old has been a mainstay of Kenyan politics since the 1980s, but despite four attempts has never won the presidency. Instead he seems to have inherited the political misfortune of his father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, who led the opposition for three decades but never the country. |

More British Isil fighters have returned home 'than any other Western country' Posted: 24 Oct 2017 08:19 AM PDT Britain has seen more Islamic State fighters return home than any Western country, according to a report by MI6's former director of global counterterrorism, who warned of the risk they continue to pose. More than 425 of the 850 Britons who left to join Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) in the last five years have returned, only fewer than Turkey's 900 returnees, Tunisia's 800 and Saudi Arabia's 760. The number who have come back to the UK compares with around 300 in Germany and 271 in France, which saw nearly 2,000 join Isil, according to Richard Barrett's report for the US-based Soufan Centre think-tank. The figures also reveal that more than 1,100 high-risk Britons had been flagged to authorities in Turkey over suspicion they planned to travel through the country on to neighbouring Syria. While more than 100 Isil British jihadists are thought to have been killed, including the UK's most wanted woman Sally Jones in a CIA drone strike earlier this year, as many as 350 are unaccounted for and could still be at large. The research suggested more than 40,000 individuals travelled to join Isil from more than 110 nations both before and after it declared a caliphate in June 2014. Briton's most notorious jihadists Junaid Hussein, Mohammed Emwazi aka Jihadi John and Reyaad Khan filmed in 2014 in video given to The Telegraph Credit: The Telegraph The number represents more than four times as many fighters as the number of recruits who joined the fight against the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan in the 1980s. The new assessment calculates that at least 5,600 isil jihadists have gone back to their home countries, some of whom after becoming disillusioned with the group but others to carry out attacks in the West. It says the returnees - most of whom are imprisoned or disappear from view - will continue to present a security challenge for years to come. The report comes as debate rages in the UK over how to security services should deal with those who decided to join the terror group. Rory Stewart, the international development minister, said at the weekend that those who left to fight for the "death cult" are guilty of horrific acts and the only way of dealing with them is to kill them "in almost every case". "I don't think these sort of comments are helpful," Mr Barrett told the Telegraph on Tuesday. "They certainly won't do much to encourage those perhaps looking to surrender or give up their fight to do so. They will probably decide they're better off just battling to the end in that case. "It will only feed conspiracy theories that they already believe that our special forces are just killing them all on sight and there is no judicial process" he added. British Isil fighter Mohammed Emwazi brandishes a knife in this still file image from a 2014 video Credit: SITE Max Hill QC, the independent reviewer of terrorism legislation, last week called for a focus on "reintegration" in cases where authorities have decided individuals who return should not face prosecution. The Home Office has disclosed that of the 400 fighters who had returned from Syria and Iraq, only 54 were convicted. Several hundred foreign fighters surrendered to US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces in the final days of the battle for the Syrian city of Raqqa last week. It is thought at least one Briton may have been among them. The other remaining recruits are thought to have either been killed by air strikes, or continue to fight for the group in its last-remaining territory in Deir Ezzor province to the south of Raqqa. |
Judge to decide Trump impact in U.S. Army deserter Bergdahl's case Posted: 23 Oct 2017 11:03 AM PDT By Greg Lacour FORT BRAGG, N.C. (Reuters) - A military judge will weigh whether President Donald Trump's critical statements about U.S. Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl have hurt the soldier's chances of getting fair treatment in the desertion case that could send him to prison for life. Bergdahl's lead attorney, Eugene Fidell, argued on Monday that the 31-year-old Idaho native should be spared prison time because the Republican president had again unlawfully influenced the proceedings. Sentencing proceedings were postponed until Wednesday due to a family emergency for a lawyer in the case and the one-hour hearing instead focused on Trump, who during last year's presidential campaign called Bergdahl "a no-good traitor who should have been executed." "His statements clearly called for Sergeant Bergdahl to be severely punished," Fidell said in court at North Carolina's Fort Bragg. |

Shocking moment man pushes woman onto train tracks in Hong Kong Posted: 23 Oct 2017 02:08 AM PDT A man shocked onlookers when he pushed a woman onto train tracks at a station in Hong Kong, causing her to fall and hit her head. The harrowing CCTV footage shows him strolling past a woman in a hi-viz vest before knocking her onto the tracks. After falling, she looks up at her attacker. The 59-year-old unnamed cleaner was shoved onto the rails by a man who then slowly walks away from the scene. According to the South China Morning Post, she had been on platform No 5 at the Yuen Long terminal for the Light Rail's 761P route at about 10.30am. She waved to an acquaintance before being shoved onto the tracks. No train was passing at the time, but the terrifying possibility clearly resonated with social media users, who have shared the video thousands of times. According to the South China Morning Post, the man was arrested on suspicion of assault. A spokeswoman told the newspaper: "The woman suffered injuries to her jaw and was sent to Pok Oi Hospital for treatment." It is understood the alleged assailant has a Hong Kong identity card. Officers are now searching for a motive. |
