School nurses save money: study

Posted: 19 May 2014 01:33 PM PDT

By Genevra Pittman NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A Massachusetts program that put full-time registered nurses in schools more than paid for itself by averting medical costs and lost work for parents and teachers, according to a new study. Many school districts have cut or reduced the hours of school nurses in recent years, and nationwide less than half of public schools have a full-time nurse, the authors of the report note. To assess the Massachusetts program, the researchers compared money spent putting full-time nurses in schools with money the program saved by reducing doctors' visits and keeping parents at work and teachers in front of the classroom. For the 22 types of procedures school nurses performed during the study, from testing blood sugar to administering physical therapy, the researchers calculated how much it would cost to go to a clinic or hospital for the same care.

An Arizona school district superintendent who stands accused of falsifying graduation rates broke down at an emergency board meeting on Friday night and dramatically begged board members to buy out the remainder of his lucrative contract. At a prior board meeting last week, school board member Buck Crouch charged that that Manuel Isquierdo, the beleaguered superintendent of Tucson's Sunnyside Unified School District, had submitted graduation percentages that don't corroborate with the rates on the Arizona Department of Education website, reports local CBS affiliate KOLD. Crouch's allegations came amid the run-up to a wild school board recall election, set for Tuesday.

UK universities say research funds at risk if Britain leaves EU

Posted: 19 May 2014 04:58 AM PDT

British universities warned on Monday that the nation's higher education industry would lose its influence over European funding worth 1.2 billion pounds a year to the research sector if it were to leave the European Union. Prime Minister David Cameron has promised to hold a public vote on whether to leave the 28-member bloc by 2017 if he wins an election next year as he tries to stop disgruntled voters turning to the anti-EU UK Independence Party (UKIP). "Without an influential voice in the development of EU policy, the UK would lose its ability to influence policy affecting research and higher education," said Christopher Snowden, president of higher education body Universities UK. The letter, also signed by Universities UK board members, said British universities contribute 73 billion pounds to the country's economy.
