New Mexico, Colorado wildfires force hundreds to evacuate Posted: 02 Jun 2018 02:06 PM PDT The two fires, about 250 miles (400 km) apart in the drought-parched Four Corners region of the Southwestern United States, have consumed almost 30,000 acres (12,000 hectares)between them, officials said. The larger of the two, the so-called Ute Park Fire in Colfax County, New Mexico, was zero percent contained after scorching nearly 28,000 acres by Saturday near Cimarron, a town of about 1,100 people northeast of Santa Fe, according to a bulletin on the New Mexico Fire Information website. About 300 homes were threatened in Cimarron, where officials issued a mandatory evacuation on Friday. |
Five dead as E coli outbreak spreads across the US in contaminated lettuce Posted: 02 Jun 2018 05:12 AM PDT Five people have died due to an E coli outbreak across the United States, thought to be spread by romaine lettuce. The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed 197 cases of the deadly disease across 35 states, making it the largest E coli outbreak since 2006, when 200 people were affected. Although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says there is no single grower or distributor to be blamed for the outbreak, and is still investigating, Arizona's Yuma growing region is thought to be the source of the contaminated lettuce. |
Internet boyfriend Benedict Cumberbatch literally fought off a bunch of muggers Posted: 02 Jun 2018 10:09 AM PDT Benedict Cumberbatch helped fight off a group of muggers attacking a cyclist in London, a mere stone's throw from Sherlock Holmes' Baker Street home. "The cyclist was lucky, Benedict's a superhero," said Cumberbatch's Uber driver, who witnessed the whole thing and eventually joined to help. Yeah, we know. SEE ALSO: Benedict Cumberbatch takes a strong stand on equal pay Cumberbatch reportedly leapt out of his Uber to help the struggling cyclist, who was being attacked by no less than four assailants. Bystanders told The Sun that he shouted "Leave him alone!" and then pulled the muggers off their victim. One of the attackers tried to punch Cumberbatch before fleeing the scene (is that you, Watson?), but the man has Marvel training. Image: tumblr"It all got a bit surreal," said the Uber driver, Manuel Dias. "Here was Sherlock Holmes fighting off four attackers just round the corner from Baker Street." Surreal indeed. Dias suspected the muggers ran away, not only because they were being physically bested by a literal superhero, but because they recognized Cumberbatch. Imagine getting in a fight and then realizing you're up against a ripped Dr. Strange! After the attackers left, Cumberbatch checked that the victim was okay and gave him a hug. The cyclist sustained some minor injuries but avoided any severe harm – though we're not sure how he recovered from that hug. Merkel voices support for Macron's proposed European defence force Posted: 03 Jun 2018 05:26 AM PDT Angela Merkel on Sunday gave German support to French proposals for a joint European military "intervention force" that will take action in trouble spots around the world. Britain has already backed the planned force, which will operate independently of the European Union, despite misgivings that it could be seen as a "European army". The force is a key element of Emmanuel Macron's proposals to reform European defence and integrate the continent's many militaries more closely together. Until now German reluctance has been seen as a major obstacle, but Mrs Merkel on Sunday gave qualified support to the plans. "I am in favor of President Macron's proposal for an intervention initiative," the German chancellor told Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung newspaper. "However, such an intervention force with a common military-strategic culture must fit into the structure of defense cooperation," she added. "European defense cooperation is very important. Of the 180 weapon systems that currently coexist in Europe, we must move to a situation like the United States, which has only about 30 weapons systems." The new intervention force has been touted as an opportunity to involve Britain in European defence cooperation after Brexit. FAQ | European joint defence force Earl Howe, the junior defence minister, said last month: "It will help to achieve what we are looking for, which is a deep and special partnership with our European colleagues in defence and security". Mrs Merkel said she welcomed the opportunity to involve Britain in the force. But she also stressed that the the EU's existing defence pact and any "common military strategy" are "closely related", which will stoke Brexiteer fears that the force could involve Britain in a European army by the back door. Mr Macron is thought to be keen to involve Britain in future European defence cooperation as one of the continent's most effective militaries. But he is also pushing for the force in part because of frustrations with the slow pace of EU defence integration. Twenty-three member states signed up to a defence cooperation pact last year after Britain dropped its opposition in light of Brexit. But progress has been slow amid foot-dragging from several members, including Germany, where there are traditional misgivings over the role of the military, given the country's Second World War history. Mrs Merkel emphasised that the German armed forces would remain commanded by parliament and not the government, and "would not take part in every mission". |
Saudi warns of military action if Qatar gets Russian missiles: report Posted: 02 Jun 2018 04:50 AM PDT Saudi Arabia has threatened military action against Qatar if it goes ahead and acquires Russia's top of the range S-400 air defence missile system, Le Monde daily reported. Citing information it had obtained, Le Monde said Friday that Riyadh had written to French President Emmanuel Macron asking him to intervene to prevent the deal going ahead and to help preserve regional stability. There was no immediate official reaction from the president's office or the French foreign ministry to the report. |

Targeted cancer treatments far outperform traditional methods Posted: 02 Jun 2018 06:58 AM PDT Cancer treatments that attack tumors based on their individual genetic traits -- not their location in the body -- far outperform traditional methods, extending survival for twice as many patients, a study said Saturday. The precision medicine field of targeted therapy involves testing tumors for clues about their genetic mutations, and matching patients with new drugs designed to block cancer's growth on a molecular level. The results of the first and largest precision medicine trial to look at survival across a host of cancer types and many different targeted therapies were released at the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in Chicago, the world's largest annual cancer meeting. |
Pope to meet 5 abused Chilean priests Posted: 02 Jun 2018 09:27 AM PDT Pope Francis will on Saturday meet five Chilean priests who were sexually abused by another priest, Fernando Karadima, in an effort to heal their wounds and those of the church, the Vatican said. In a letter to Chileans issued last week, the pope had voiced his "shame" that the Catholic church had failed "to listen and react in time" to allegations of sexual abuse by Chilean clergy. Several members of the Chilean church hierarchy are accused by victims of ignoring and covering up child abuse by Karadima during the 1980s and 1990s. |
Israel strikes Hamas military targets and naval forces in Gaza as rocket fire breaks calm Posted: 03 Jun 2018 06:38 AM PDT Israeli aircraft pounded over a dozen militant targets in Gaza, the army said Sunday, after Palestinian projectile fire shattered a ceasefire reached just days ago after the worst flare-up since a 2014 war. The latest escalation came hours after thousands of Palestinians attended the funeral of a young female volunteer medic killed by Israeli fire on Gaza's border. In a first wave of air strikes, Israeli "fighter jets targeted 10 terror sites in three military compounds belonging to the Hamas terror organisation in the Gaza Strip," the army said in a statement early Sunday. "Among the targets were two Hamas munition manufacturing and storage sites and a military compound," the army said. The strikes came in retaliation for rockets fired at Israel, as well as "various terror activities approved and orchestrated by the Hamas terror organisation over the weekend," the army said. A few hours later aircraft shot at "five terror targets at a military compound belonging to the Hamas terror organisation's naval force in the northern Gaza Strip," the army said in a separate statement. There were no reports of casualties in Gaza. On Saturday evening, militants in the Palestinian enclave fired two projectiles at southern Israel, where air raid sirens sent residents to bomb shelters. Early Sunday, four more projectiles were separately launched at Israel. Three were intercepted, the army said, with the fourth apparently hitting an open field. No group in Gaza claimed responsibility for the projectile attacks, which came shortly after the Saturday funeral of Razan al-Najjar, 21, a volunteer with the Gaza health ministry, who was fatally shot in the chest near Khan Yunis on Friday. Ambulances and medical crews attended the funeral, where Najjar's father held the blood-stained white medics' jacket she wore when she was shot, as mourners called for revenge. Gazans have since March 30 staged border protests demanding the return of Palestinians to land they fled or were expelled from during the 1948 war surrounding Israel's creation, now inside the Jewish state. Palestinian paramedics mourn over the death of their colleague Razan al-Najjar i Credit: SAID KHATIB/AFP/Getty Images The demonstrations have been accompanied by smaller clashes as youths hurl stones at Israeli soldiers and attempt to breach the border fence, at times laying explosive devices on the fence or throwing grenades. The demonstrations and violence peaked on May 14 when at least 61 Palestinians were killed in clashes as tens of thousands of Gazans protested the US transfer of its embassy in Israel to the disputed city of Jerusalem the same day. On Sunday, Gaza health ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra announced the death of Mohammad Hamada, 30, who was wounded on May 14. Hamada's death brings the toll of Gazans killed by Israeli fire since the end of March to 124. Low-level demonstrations have continued since. |

US-Mexico border: How hope, aspiration and love drives migrants through a perilous journey Posted: 02 Jun 2018 04:47 AM PDT As Donald Trump stood before his jubilant supporters at the end of his thank you tour in Alabama in December 2016 chants of "build the wall" echoed around the Ladd-Peebles Stadium. The boisterous crowd interrupted the then president-elect to remind him of the promise he had made during the election campaign: to clamp down on people illegally crossing the border into the US. The infamous structure, despite being practically impossible to deliver, serves as a physical and metaphorical blockade stopping undocumented immigrants entering the US from Mexico and Central America, 11 million of whom already reside in the country. |

The Singapore hotel where top brass, dealers and spies rub shoulders Posted: 03 Jun 2018 07:54 AM PDT By Greg Torode SINGAPORE (Reuters) - For the region's military officers, diplomats, weapons manufacturers and spies, there are few livelier places than the lobby of Singapore's Shangri-La hotel around mid-year. Here, beneath pillared ceilings and chandeliers, they gather for an annual informal bash - called the Shangri-La Dialogue - organized by the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies. America's poor becoming more destitute under Trump: U.N. expert Posted: 02 Jun 2018 04:10 PM PDT Poverty in the United States is extensive and deepening under the Trump administration whose policies seem aimed at removing the safety net from millions of poor people, while rewarding the rich, a U.N. human rights investigator has found. Philip Alston, U.N. special rapporteur on extreme poverty, called on U.S. authorities to provide solid social protection and address underlying problems, rather than "punishing and imprisoning the poor". In a report, Alston said that as welfare benefits and access to health insurance were being slashed, President Donald Trump's tax reform awarded "financial windfalls" to the mega-rich and large companies, further increasing inequality. |
