Arizona man arrested for hacking email accounts at universities Posted: 02 Nov 2016 03:47 PM PDT By Nate Raymond NEW YORK (Reuters) - An Arizona man was arrested on Wednesday on charges that he hacked into over 1,000 email accounts for students and others at two universities and tried to do the same at 75 other higher-education institutions throughout the country. Jonathan Powell, a 29-year-old Phoenix resident, was arrested based on a criminal complaint filed in federal court in Manhattan charging him with fraud in connection with computers, according to prosecutors. According to the complaint, Powell used password reset tools try to access thousands of email accounts at two universities in New York and Pennsylvania, successfully changing the passwords for 1,050 accounts.

Chicago school head lauds 'cost-effective' teachers contract Posted: 02 Nov 2016 11:32 AM PDT The Chicago Public Schools (CPS) should be able to afford a new contract with teachers, but it must continue to look to the state of Illinois for more money, the district's CEO said on Wednesday, less than a day after union members ratified the deal. Forrest Claypool, who heads the nation's third-largest public school system, said the four-year contract will cost CPS $400 million less than the previous pact, which expired in 2015. Claypool said CPS must continue to cut costs and obtain more "equitable" funding from state officials, who have agreed to send the district a one-time $215 million pension contribution, which is contingent on the still-uncertain passage of comprehensive pension reforms by lawmakers this year.

Called by the Spanish Alliance of Parents' Associations (CEAPA), a network that covers some 12,000 state schools across the country, the strike targets weekend homework for primary and high school students. Jose Luis Pazos, president of the CEAPA, told AFP Wednesday parents had launched the unprecedented initiative due to "the absolute certainty that homework is detrimental" to children, damaging their extra-curricular development.
