Harlan County, Ky., has a coal-mining museum. It’s putting solar panels on the roof. Posted: 06 Apr 2017 09:31 AM PDT A coal-mining museum in the heart of coal country is turning to solar power in an effort to save money and help the surrounding community. The Kentucky Coal Mining Museum is located in Benham, in the southeast corner of the Bluegrass State. Housed in what was originally an International Harvester commissary, the museum opened in 1994 and contains tributes to the industry for which the area is best known. |

Angry Ford mechanic emerges as French debate star Posted: 05 Apr 2017 10:01 AM PDT France's latest celebrated underdog is Philippe Poutou, a Ford factory worker and head of an anti-capitalist party who became one of the stars of the second presidential debate. Poutou, a balding 50-year-old wearing a long-sleeved T-shirt who slouched over his lectern for parts of the three-hour televised exchange, signalled his intent with his opening remarks. "Aside from (communist candidate) Natalie Arthaud, I think I'm the only person standing at these lecterns to have a normal profession, a normal job," said the mechanic from southwest Bordeaux. |

Duterte orders Philippine troops to South China Sea reefs Posted: 06 Apr 2017 01:17 AM PDT Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday ordered Filipino troops to deploy on unoccupied South China Sea islands and reefs claimed by Manila, in a move that could provoke rival claimants including Beijing. In a surprise announcement, Duterte told reporters he has ordered soldiers to build structures on Philippine-claimed islands and reefs in the strategically located Spratly archipelago. "I have ordered the armed forces to occupy all," he said during a visit to a military camp on the western Philippine island of Palawan, the largest land mass close to the Spratly group. |

South Sudanese troops butchered civilians, shot children: refugees Posted: 05 Apr 2017 07:55 AM PDT Hundreds of South Sudanese refugees fled into Uganda for a second day on Wednesday, bearing further grim testimony of an attack by government forces on the border town of Pajok in which at least 17 people were killed, according to a Reuters tally. Some were shot as they tried to flee. Two children were run down by a car. The testimony from the refugees, more than 3,000 of whom have gathered just inside the Ugandan border, offers a glimpse of the brutality of a three-year civil war ripping apart the world's youngest nation. The government denies its Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) forces target civilians and said Monday's operation in Pajok, a town of more than 10,000 people 15 km (10 miles) north of the Ugandan border, was to flush out rebel guerrillas. |

North Korea fires missile into Sea of Japan Posted: 04 Apr 2017 09:49 PM PDT Nuclear-armed North Korea fired a ballistic missile into the Sea of Japan on Wednesday, in what analysts said was a warning ahead of a China-US summit at which Pyongyang's accelerating atomic weapons programme is set to top the agenda. South Korea's defence ministry said the missile -– launched days after Pyongyang warned of retaliation if the global community ramps up sanctions -- had flown 60 kilometres (about 40 miles). In a terse statement, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said: "The United States has spoken enough about North Korea. |

Senate Republican leader starts clock ticking to Gorsuch showdown Posted: 05 Apr 2017 02:50 AM PDT By Lawrence Hurley and Richard Cowan WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Senate moved on Tuesday toward ramming through approval of President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee this week, as its top Republican said he had the votes to wipe away Democratic roadblocks but vowed to preserve the minority party's ability to hold up legislation. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell plans to change the Senate's long-standing rules in order to eliminate the ability to use a procedural hurdle called a filibuster against Supreme Court nominees like Trump's pick, Neil Gorsuch, if a Democratic filibuster succeeds as expected in blocking a confirmation vote. |
Taliban suicide blast targeting census team kills seven in Pakistan Posted: 05 Apr 2017 09:30 AM PDT Seven people were killed and up to 19 wounded in a Taliban suicide blast that targeted a census team in Pakistan's eastern city of Lahore Wednesday, officials said. The attack, which the military confirmed was a suicide blast and was quickly claimed by the Pakistani Taliban, was the latest incident to dent growing confidence in security as Pakistan wages a years-long war on militancy. "I saw two dead bodies on the spot and others crying," the student told AFP from hospital, where local officials were giving flowers to the wounded as a crowd gathered outside. |
Astronomers just discovered something awesome about the most Earth-like planet ever found Posted: 06 Apr 2017 03:19 PM PDT Do you like Earth? Yeah, it's pretty neat, huh? Well despite living on a planet as awesome as our own, astronomers are super eager to find more Earths, just for fun. A planet called Gliese 1132 B (GJ 1132b if you feel like making it slightly shorter) is one such planet. It's called a "Super Earth" because it's larger than our own planet, but is thought to be made of similar stuff, and researchers just discovered something extremely awesome that makes GJ 1132b the most Earth-like exoplanet humans have ever found: it has an atmosphere.
Finding planets in the depths of space that bear similarities to Earth is a long and complicated process. First we have to find the planet itself, then we have to determine its size, take an educated guess as to what it's made out of, and figure out how far away it sits from its star. If all of those tests, readings, and measurements come back in the right neighborhood, scientists have to determine if the world has an atmosphere, because without that there's essentially zero chance that life is or could be supported on its surface. GJ 1132b has managed to make it past all of those hurdles, but even that strict criteria doesn't confirm the planet's ability to host living things. The planet is thought to be quite hot, with temperatures at or above those of Venus, which is hundreds of degrees hotter than Earth. If life does exist on the planet, it could be dramatically different from anything humans have ever imagined, but we won't know for certain for a long while. In the meantime, researchers are suggesting that observatories around the world give the planet some special attention going forward. |

Clashes at Venezuela protest against 'dictatorship' Posted: 06 Apr 2017 04:50 PM PDT Violence erupted for a third straight day at protests against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Thursday, escalating tension over moves to keep the leftist leader in power. Opposition protesters chanting "No more dictatorship!" hurled stones at National Guard riot police who blocked them from marching on central Caracas. The police responded with tear gas and water cannons, prompting chaos on the eight-lane highway where some 10,000 protesters had tried to break through security barricades. |

Girl Develops 'Flesh Eating' Infection After Strep Throat Posted: 06 Apr 2017 07:36 AM PDT A 6-year-old girl in Ohio recently needed to have her leg amputated after she developed a rare complication from an infection with strep throat bacteria. The girl, Tessa Puma, was treated for strep throat in early March, the Akron Beacon Journal reported. At that time, she didn't have symptoms of the illness, but the doctors treated her because she had tested positive for group A Streptococcus, the bacterium that causes strep, after her father had strep throat, the newspaper said. |

5 features on the LG G6 and Samsung Galaxy S8 you won’t find on any iPhone Posted: 06 Apr 2017 05:35 AM PDT Apple's iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus quickly became the fastest-selling smartphones of all time following their launch this past September. The new Apple flagships were the company's most powerful smartphones ever, and they included a number of firsts. Apple introduced multiple new colors to its iPhone lineup for the first time, and it doubled the available storage in each of its iPhone tiers for the first time. But there was also a first that Apple fans weren't so happy about: the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus marked the first time Apple reused the same iPhone design for the third consecutive year. The iPhone has always felt like it was ahead of the curve, but that changed in 2017 as the LG G6 and Samsung Galaxy S8 were introduced. These sleek new smartphones feature next-generation designs that leave Apple's iPhone design from 2014 in the dust. Of course, the differences extend beyond design, and in this post we'll cover five features in particular from the LG G6 and Galaxy S8 that will make iPhone users jealous. Bye bye bezelsCompanies like Samsung completely reinvented their smartphone business by doing everything they could to copy Apple's iPhone designs, and it worked for Samsung in particular even better than the company could have imagined. In 2017, however, the iPhone is starting to feel quite dated. The new LG G6 and Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ feature displays that do away with any lingering home buttons and logos. The new phones also rework internal components in order to make the bezels surrounding the screens as narrow as possible with today's technical limitations. The result is a user experience that's more immersive than ever before. Fat guy in a little coatSpeaking of those narrow bezels, the LG G6 and Galaxy S8 also manage to stuff very large screens into remarkably compact designs. Chris Farley would've loved these phones. With screen-to-body ratios that exceed 80% for the LG G6 and Galaxy S8 duo alike, there have never been widely available phones that pack larger displays into phones this size. In fact, the G6 and the smaller Galaxy S8 both include displays that are bigger than the one in the iPhone 7 Plus phablet, yet the phones themselves are closer in size to the smaller iPhone 7. An assistant that really assistsSiri has gotten so much better in recent years, but users still complain constantly about all of Siri's shortcomings. Meanwhile, on smartphones running Android 7.0 Nougat and later, users absolutely adore Google Assistant for the most part. Google Assistant might be terrible on the Google Home, but on a phone like the LG G6 or Galaxy S8 it's pretty terrific. One less wire to worry aboutPlugging a Lightning cable into the bottom of an iPhone isn't exactly a taxing chore, so I've been surprised to see how excited iPhone users have been to see rumors that the upcoming iPhone 8, iPhone 7s Plus and iPhone 7s will include wireless charging. It is a pretty handy technology, especially now that there are fast wireless charging standards. You know which three phones already include support for fast wireless charging? That's right, the LG G6, Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. So many selfiesLast but certainly not least, we have a complaint that iPhone users have had since practically the dawn of time. And the bad news that there is a 0% chance Apple will ever address it, because doing so would mean destroying Apple's iPhone ASPs. When it comes to Apple's latest iPhones, you can buy a 32GB model, a 128GB model or a 256GB model. Want more storage? You'll need an external device like Lightning to microSD card adapter or a Lightning flash drive. Want more storage in your LG G6, Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8+? Pop in a microSD card. |

Hamas executes three Palestinians in Gaza, says they collaborated with Israel Posted: 06 Apr 2017 04:50 AM PDT By Nidal al-Mughrabi GAZA (Reuters) - Gaza's ruling Hamas movement executed three Palestinians on Thursday convicted of collaborating with Israel, hanging the men during a campaign to persuade any Israeli-recruited agents to come forward in return for more lenient punishment. Hamas leaders and officials, along with the heads of Gaza clans and local security chiefs, watched the execution in the courtyard of the enclave's main police headquarters. The Hamas-run Interior Ministry said the men, aged 32, 42 and 55, were convicted of treason and spying for hostile foreign parties and had provided information that helped Israel track and kill Palestinians, including leaders of militant factions. |

Ahmadinejad supports former deputy in Iran election Posted: 05 Apr 2017 06:57 AM PDT Former hardline Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Wednesday he would support a long-time ally in May's presidential election. In his first press conference for four years, Ahmadinejad said he will back Hamid Baghaie, his former vice president who headed the tourism board. Ahmadinejad last year ruled out a comeback of his own after supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei indicated it could have a polarising effect on the nation. |
Inside the North Korean military: A look at the rogue nation's armed services Posted: 06 Apr 2017 06:14 AM PDT North Korea rarely misses an opportunity to conduct banned missile tests to coincide with high-profile world events at which the impoverished yet nuclear-armed country is likely to be discussed. On Wednesday, it fired a missile a day before the first meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping. North Korea is pushing hard to upgrade its weapons systems to cope with what it calls U.S. hostility. |

Confirmed: There’s a premium version of the Galaxy S8, and you can’t have one Posted: 05 Apr 2017 06:16 AM PDT When the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ are released in just over two weeks, they'll be the most beautiful and most powerful smartphones the world has ever seen. As we detailed in our in-depth hands-on Galaxy S8 preview, Samsung really outdid itself with these new flagship phones, both inside and out. In fact, when the new handsets finally hit the market later this month, the only smartphones on the planet that will be more impressive than the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ are the, well, Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. Confused? Allow us to elaborate. The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ will be the first smartphones in the world to feature Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 835 chipset and Samsung's new Exynos 8895 SoC. These 10nm chips offer huge advantages when it comes to both power and efficiency. They phones will also pack lightning-fast UFS 2.1 flash storage modules and plenty more cutting-edge components. As we've seen in several benchmark tests at this point, these phones are incredibly powerful. But rumors around the web have suggested for months that there are even better versions of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ lurking out there, and now those rumors have been confirmed by Samsung for the first time. As seen in promotional materials on Samsung's Korean website (via Android Headlines), there will be versions of the phones available that include 6GB of RAM instead of 4GB, and 128GB of UFS 2.1 flash storage instead of 64GB. Unfortunately for Android fans in the US who might be obsessed with specs, those versions will not be sold in America. For the overwhelming majority of smartphone users out there, "only" having 4GB of RAM is hardly a problem. And as for the added storage space, the Galaxy S8 and S8+ include microSDXC support so anyone can pop in a 200GB microSD card or even a 256GB microSD card and have more than enough space. But for hardcore Android users, having the knowledge that there are versions of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ out there that are better than the ones available in the US is proving to be a bit disconcerting, as evidence by the comments we've seen around the web over the past few weeks. |
