Mueller Hammers Manafort's Lack of Remorse as Sentencing Nears Posted: 05 Mar 2019 02:40 PM PST In their final submission to U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III in Alexandria, prosecutors working for Mueller accused the former chairman of President Donald Trump's 2016 election campaign of shifting blame to "everyone from the Special Counsel's Office to his Ukrainian clients." The filing came in response to Manafort's bid for leniency. "Manafort suggests, for example, that but for the appointment of the Special Counsel's Office, he would not have been charged in connection with hiding more than $55 million abroad, failing to pay more than $6 million in taxes, and defrauding three financial institutions of more than $25 million dollars," prosecutors said. Manafort, 69, faces as long as 24 years in prison after being convicted of bank fraud, tax fraud and failing to disclose offshore bank accounts to U.S. authorities, following a trial last year. |

Turkey's foreign minister says allies should not intervene in its purchase of weapons: Hurriyet Posted: 06 Mar 2019 07:05 AM PST Turkey's allies should not intervene with Ankara's purchase of defense systems from non-NATO countries because they have rejected proposals to purchase it from them, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu was quoted as saying on Wednesday. "These allies who sometimes create obstacles for us to purchase even simple weapons have started feeling uneasy after we bought S-400s," he was quoted as saying by Hurriyet newspaper. The U.S. State Department said on Tuesday that Washington has made clear to Turkey that if it proceeds with the purchase of Russian S-400 air defense system the United States will have to reassess Ankara's participation in the F-35 fighter program. |

French jihadist Jean-Michel Clain killed in Syria: wife Posted: 05 Mar 2019 06:34 AM PST The wife of French jihadist Jean-Michel Clain told AFP Tuesday in Syria that her husband was killed last month after a coalition strike killed his brother Fabien, another notorious jihadist. "The drone killed my brother-in-law and then the mortar killed my husband," Dorothee Maquere said at a screening area after exiting the Islamic State group's last pocket in Baghouz. Fabien Clain, 41, gained notoriety after voicing an audio recording claiming responsibility for the November 2015 attacks in Paris, when IS jihadists slaughtered 129 people in coordinated attacks at restaurants and bars around the French capital. |

Poll: 64 Percent Believe Trump Committed Crimes before Taking Office Posted: 06 Mar 2019 08:06 AM PST Almost two thirds of the public believes President Trump committed crimes before being sworn in as president, according to a Quinnipiac poll released Wednesday.About 64 percent of respondents said they believed that Trump was involved in illegal activity before his presidency, while 24 percent believed he was not, and 13 percent said they were not sure.Respondents were more evenly split on the question of whether Trump has committed crimes in office, with 45 percent believing he has and 43 percent believe he hasn't.The poll was conducted after Trump's former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, testified last week in a public hearing before the House Oversight Committee. Cohen, who is facing a three-year prison sentence for lying to Congress, campaign-finance violations, and other financial crimes, alleged that Trump was involved in a criminal conspiracy to pay off women with whom he'd had extramarital affairs. In the Quinnipiac poll, half of voters said they trusted Cohen's word over the president's, compared to only 35 percent who said they trusted Trump over Cohen. But only 44 percent said Cohen told Congress the truth last week. |
Republicans Just Can’t Stop Talking About the ‘Green New Deal’ Posted: 06 Mar 2019 08:09 AM PST The party hopes they can use it to take back seats in Congress and possibly keep the White House in 2020. A cadre of Republican senators plan to take to the Senate floor Wednesday to bash the plan. "We are preparing to have a nice informative colloquy on that issue," Senator Roger Wicker, a Republican from Mississippi, said in an interview. |

In #MeToo era, Ford lauded on left and right as honest and brave Posted: 05 Mar 2019 06:27 PM PST Before the Senate hearing on Thursday, Ford had never appeared on camera, and was only depicted in news media reports with a grainy photo lifted from the internet. Thousands of conservatives took to social media to accuse Ford of lying to bring down Kavanaugh, who angrily and tearfully denied her accusations in a day of dramatic, high-stakes testimony from both the accused and the accuser. While Republican senators depicted her testimony as part of a partisan attack orchestrated by Democrats, they -- and Kavanaugh -- were careful not to attack Ford personally. |

Resolution Condemning Anti-Semitism Splits House Democrats Posted: 06 Mar 2019 11:25 AM PST House Democrats clashed during a closed-door meeting Wednesday over how best to respond to Representative Ilhan Omar's (D., Minn.) repeated use of anti-Semitic tropes to impugn the motivations and patriotism of her pro-Israel colleagues.A number of Omar's fellow progressives lashed out at Democratic leadership for agreeing to vote on a resolution condemning anti-Semitism in response to Omar's recent claim that her pro-Israel colleagues are motivated by a nefarious "dual loyalty" to the U.S. and Israel.Representative Bonnie Watson-Coleman (D., N.J.) was the first to question the leadership's decision to vote on the resolution and suggested it played into the hands of Republicans and "the media," according to the Washington Post."We've individually and collectively already responded to the fact that we oppose all '-isms' that do not treat people in this country fairly and justly," she said. "To continue to engage in this discussion is simply an opportunity to give both the media and Republicans distractions from our agenda. We've got important work to do."Representative Cedric Richmond (D., La.) suggested that President Trump, not Democratic leaders, should be responsible for policing bigotry within the caucus."I think there's a big rise in anti-Semitism and racism, and that's a bigger conversation we need to be having." Richmond reportedly said during the meeting. "But it starts at 1600 Pennsylvania. It doesn't start with one member out of 435 members of Congress."Representative Ayanna Pressley (D., Mass.) echoed Richmond's remarks during the meeting, suggesting it would be hypocritical to condemn religious bigotry without addressing Trump's rhetoric. "We need to have equity in our outrage," she said."The occupant of this White House who is seeding every form of hate, emboldening it with racist rhetoric and policies, that is who we all need to be focused on, and this is a distraction," Pressley told the Post after the meeting.Speaking at a progressive town-hall event in Washington, D.C, last week, Omar argued that the anti-Semitism accusations she's faced since being elected represent a concerted effort to shutdown debate over how the U.S. should engage with Israel."What I'm fearful of — because [Representative] Rashida [Tlaib] and I are Muslim — that a lot of our Jewish colleagues, a lot of our constituents, a lot of our allies, go to thinking that everything we say about Israel to be anti-Semitic because we are Muslim," said Omar."So for me, I want to talk about the political influence in this country that says it is okay to push for allegiance to a foreign country," she later added. The remarks drew immediate public criticism from senior House Democrats Nita Lowey and Elliot Engel of New York.> Lawmakers must be able to debate w/o prejudice or bigotry. I am saddened that Rep. Omar continues to mischaracterize support for Israel. I urge her to retract this statement and engage in further dialogue with the Jewish community on why these comments are so hurtful.> > -- Nita Lowey (@NitaLowey) March 2, 2019"Her comments were outrageous and deeply hurtful, and I ask that she retract them, apologize, and commit to making her case on policy issues without resorting to attacks that have no place in the Foreign Affairs Committee or the House of Representatives," Engel said in a statement on Friday. It remains unclear whether the resolution, which was amended earlier this week to condemn anti-Muslim bigotry as well as anti-Semitism, will receive a vote. |

Illegal US border crossings swell to 76,000 in February Posted: 05 Mar 2019 01:06 PM PST The number of undocumented immigrants stopped at the US border with Mexico soared to more than 76,000 in February, the highest monthly level in years, US Customs and Border Protection said Tuesday. The number of families and unaccompanied children also rose to nearly two-thirds of the total, often crossing in large groups and turning themselves in to authorities to request asylum, blunting the Trump administration's tactics aimed at curbing the flow. It was also more than double the number of February 2018 and 3.2 times the number for February 2017, the first full month after President Donald Trump took office promising to take aim at illegal immigration. |

Pakistan begins crackdown on militant groups amid global pressure Posted: 05 Mar 2019 10:50 AM PST The interior ministry said it was a move to "speed up action against all proscribed organizations". Officials said it was part of a long-planned drive against militant groups, not a response to Indian anger over what New Delhi calls Islamabad's failure to rein in militant groups operating on Pakistani soil. Pakistan is facing pressure from global powers to act against groups carrying out attacks in India, including Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), which claimed responsibility for the Feb. 14 attack that killed at least 40 paramilitary police. |

Three 'explosive devices' found in London Posted: 05 Mar 2019 10:40 AM PST British counter terrorism officers are investigating three "small improvised explosive devices" believed capable of starting small fires that were found in separate locations in London on Tuesday. The suspicious packages containing padded envelopes were found at an office block next to Heathrow Airport, the post room at Waterloo station, and at offices near London City Airport in the east of the capital, according to Scotland Yard. "The packages -- all A4-sized white postal bags containing yellow Jiffy bags -- have been assessed by specialist officers to be small improvised explosive devices," London's Metropolitan Police said in a statement. |
Posted: 06 Mar 2019 02:27 AM PST An 18-year-old from Ohio who famously inoculated himself against his mother's wishes says he attributes his mother's anti-vaccine ideology to a single source: Facebook. Ethan Lindenberger, a high school senior, testified Tuesday before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labour and Pensions, underscoring the importance of "credible" information. In contrast, he said, the false and deep-rooted beliefs his mother held – that vaccines were dangerous – were perpetuated by social media. |

Tesla says working on China import hiccup Posted: 06 Mar 2019 12:21 AM PST Tesla said Wednesday it was working to resume imports of its new Model 3 sedan in China after the company said a labelling hiccup caused problems with customs. Elon Musk's electric car firm denied the issue would impact sales of the vehicle in China, a key market for the automaker as it faces a battle to control costs and maintain profitability. Local business weekly Caixin reported Tuesday that China's customs administration had suspended imports of its Model 3 cars and was holding more than 1,600 of the vehicles -- briefly sending Tesla's stock tumbling in the US. |

Posted: 05 Mar 2019 03:50 AM PST Crew members on Air India flights have been directed to end each announcement with the phrase "Jai Hind" (victory to India), as tensions continue with Pakistan. A memo from Amitabh Singh, Air India's Director of Operations, stated: "With immediate effect, all (crew) are required to announce 'Jai Hind' at the end of every announcement after a slight pause and much fervour." According to officials, the current advisory is a "reminder" to the staff, in line with the "mood of the nation", after a suicide bombing left 40 Indian police officers dead in Indian Kashmir, leading to the first air skirmish between the rivals since 1971. Questions have continued Pakistan's involvement with jihadist groups in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The Chief of the Indian Naval Staff, Admiral Sunil Lanba, on Tuesday said: "We have seen how quickly terrorist groups evolve across the globe and this particular 'brand' of terror may well become a global problem in the near future." The febrile atmosphere last week cooled after a captured Indian pilot was returned to Delhi as a "peace gesture" by Imran Khan's government in Islamabad. How India and Pakistan came to the brink of war However, at street level nationalism has seen a reprise, with many questioning whether India and Pakistan should still meet at the Cricket World Cup this summer in England. Matches between the two are flashpoints for violence during turbulent diplomatic times. Air India, which has debts of over £3 billion and receives millions in state bailouts, was mocked online for its jingoistic slogan. Tweeters asked whether this move would suddenly make it profitable, while some joked the airline should just go the whole distance and send its stewardesses into combat, while wearing camouflage sarees. The former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti, criticised the tubthumping new policy. "Little surprise that with General Elections around the corner, the josh of patriotism hasn't even spared the skies," she tweeted. The move by Air India has precedence. Its Chairman, Ashwani Lohani, issued a similar direction to pilots in May 2016, saying: "The captain of a flight should often connect with passengers during the journey and, at the end of first address, using the words 'Jai Hind' would make a tremendous impact." |
