Abandoned buildings photo series shows beauty in urban decay Posted: 27 Jun 2018 11:03 AM PDT An urban explorer has created a powerful photography series in a campaign to show the beauty of abandoned buildings and to urge us to stop tearing them down. Shelley Koon, 54, from Dover, Del., hopes to shatter the illusion that the forgotten sites are dark and drab to reveal their beauty and appeal. Visiting hospitals, asylums, schools and factories in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, she says she can easily spend eight hours at a time exploring and photographing the locations. (Caters News) |
Japan probe arrives at asteroid after nearly four-year space odyssey Posted: 26 Jun 2018 09:16 PM PDT By Elaine Lies TOKYO (Reuters) - A Japanese space probe named after a falcon arrived at an asteroid 300 million kilometers from Earth on Wednesday after a three-and-a half year journey on a mission to seek the origins of life. The Hayabusa 2 blasted off in December 2014 for the asteroid Ryugu on a pioneering mission to take samples that scientists hope will help reveal how life began. "Everything has gone as planned," a spokesman for the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) told a news conference. |

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Syrian air defense systems failed to intercept the missiles. The Britain-based war monitor said an explosion heard at 1 a.m. (2200 GMT Monday) near the airport was caused by missiles fired by Israeli planes from the direction of the Golan Heights. |

Syria army widens southwest offensive, U.N. says 45,000 flee Posted: 26 Jun 2018 12:24 PM PDT Syrian troops widened a major offensive against rebels in the southwest on Tuesday and Jordan said it would not open its border to tens of thousands of civilians fleeing the attack. At least 45,000 people have fled the upsurge in fighting in Syria's southwestern Deraa province, heading toward the border with Jordan, the United Nations said. President Bashar al-Assad is aiming to restore control over a strategically vital part of Syria at the borders with Jordan and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, building on his military's momentum elsewhere in the seven-year conflict. |
US Supreme Court sides with anti-abortion centers in free speech case Posted: 26 Jun 2018 08:15 AM PDT The US Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled that a law requiring anti-abortion centers in California to inform pregnant clients that they could obtain the procedure elsewhere was likely unconstitutional, in a closely watched case on free speech. The justices ruled 5-4 to overturn a lower court decision in the case, saying in the majority opinion that California's notice law "imposes an unduly burdensome disclosure requirement" on the clinics to express an opinion they did not share. Anti-abortion groups had argued in March before the high court that the 2015 California law, backed by Democrats, violates their right to freedom of expression guaranteed by the First Amendment to the US Constitution. |

Last straw for McDonald's, Burger King in Mumbai plastic ban Posted: 26 Jun 2018 04:51 AM PDT Burger King, McDonald's and Starbucks are among dozens of companies fined for violating a new ban on single-use plastics in India's commercial capital Mumbai, an official said Tuesday. Some 250 officials, wearing blue uniforms and dubbed Mumbai's "anti-plastic squad", have been deployed to carry out inspections of restaurants and shops across the teeming coastal city of 20 million. Nidhi Choudhari, a deputy municipal commissioner in charge of enforcing the ban, said 660,000 rupees ($9,684) in fines had been collected during the first three days. |

Ferrari 250 GTO heads to auction, could set new price record Posted: 26 Jun 2018 06:00 AM PDT A 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO has the record for the highest price paid for a car at auction, with a buyer bidding a bit over $38 million to secure the car back in 2014. Now another 1962 250 GTO, this one bearing chassis No. 3413, is headed to auction and we could very well see the previous record fall. With just 39 ever built, all of which are still existence, the 250 GTO has become the ultimate collector car, helped along by its exclusivity and beauty. |
U.S. House defeats broad Republican immigration bill Posted: 27 Jun 2018 10:55 AM PDT WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives, as expected, defeated a Republican "compromise" bill on Wednesday aimed at providing long-term protections to "Dreamers" brought to the United States illegally as children, and dealing with a crisis over immigrant children being separated from their families. The 301-121 vote cleared the way for the House to debate an immigration measure more narrowly targeted at addressing family separations. That legislation, which also faces difficulties in Congress, is likely to be considered sometime this week. ... |
