For upper-body warm-ups, stretch multiple muscles at once Posted: 06 Mar 2015 12:38 PM PST Although athletes and coaches often swear by stretching, many common pre-workout routines may not actually enhance performance, said lead author Matt McCrary, a master's degree candidate at the University of Sydney. Higher load dynamic warm-ups are "the best bet" in most situations, said McCrary. For the upper body, these include push-ups, dumbbell back flys, and resisted lateral raises, he told Reuters Health by email. |
New York school abolishes homework. Does homework do any good? Posted: 06 Mar 2015 12:34 PM PST According to Kohn, in the 10 years since the publication of his book he has been swamped with email and letters from parents lamenting the amount of "mindless" "cookie cutter" homework that is sent home with young students nationwide. Hannah Sinha, head of a Manhattan Montessori School, one of a national string of private schools advocating that education be individualized, offers up a third perspective on the homework debate. |
Winter storm moves away; eastern U.S. to remain cold Posted: 06 Mar 2015 09:56 AM PST Record-breaking cold gripped the United States from Texas to New York on Friday, causing school closures and snarled traffic, as a storm that dropped roughly 2 feet (61 cm) of snow on some eastern parts of the country moved out to sea. Snowfall and blustery weather forced public schools in the metropolitan areas of New York and the District of Columbia to cancel classes. The National Weather Service warned of flooding and told commuters from the lower Mississippi valley to the mid-Atlantic to be wary of dangerous road conditions created by the snow, ice and slush. Low temperatures shattered records in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania and New York, said NWS meteorologist Bruce Terry. |
