FBI arrests leader of armed group stopping migrants in New MexicoThe arrest came two days after the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) accused the group of illegally detaining migrants and New Mexico's Democratic Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham ordered an investigation. Hopkins, 69, also known as Johnny Horton, was arrested in Sunland Park, New Mexico, on a federal complaint charging him with being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said in a statement. "We're not worried about it, he's going to be cleared," said Jim Benvie, a spokesman for the United Constitutional Patriots (UCP), blaming his arrest on political pressure from Lujan Grisham.

IS claims deadly attack on Afghan ministry

IS claims deadly attack on Afghan ministryThe Islamic State group Sunday claimed responsibility for an attack that killed 10 people and trapped around 2,000 for hours inside the communications ministry in the Afghan capital the previous day. Four IS jihadists detonated explosives near the ministry, then entered and "battled Afghan security forces with machine guns and hand grenades for numerous hours", the group said in a statement on its social media channels. The attack in central Kabul killed seven civilians and three members of the security forces, the interior ministry said on Sunday, in a new toll after three people died of their wounds.

Comedian upsets Ukraine's president in landslide election victory

Posted: 21 Apr 2019 11:40 AM PDT

Comedian upsets Ukraine's president in landslide election victoryA comedian who plays the president on television has turned art into real life in a landslide election against the incumbent in conflict-torn Ukraine, according to exit polls. Volodymyr Zelenskiy, 41, had 73 per cent of the vote against 26 per cent for Petro Poroshenko, 53, who was elected after protests toppled a pro-Russian leader in 2014. The story is remarkably similar to the hit show Servant of the People, where a teacher played by Mr Zelenskiy is elected president on the strength of a viral video rant. A lack of reform since the 2014 revolution has fuelled support for the outsider promising to fight corruption and leave after one term. Mr Zelenskiy easily won the first round of voting albeit without a majority.  But his superficial campaign of comedy shows and social media videos has offered little insight on how the political neophyte will achieve this with a parliament mostly allegiant to Mr Poroshenko. "Thank you to all Ukrainians, wherever you are located. I promise I will never let you down," Mr Zelenskiy said in a victory speech that lasted less than three minutes. "To all citizens of post-Soviet countries: Look at us. Anything is possible," he added.  Mr Poroshenko congratulated his opponent on victory shortly after the polls closed, saying the election had been fair and shown Ukraine to be an "independent European country". The candidate previously betrayed his inexperience when he posed with his filled-in ballot on Sunday, a violation of election laws that earned him a police citation.  Now the poorest country in Europe, Ukraine and its 42 million people stand at the forefront of tensions between Russia and the West, fighting a low-level conflict with Moscow-backed separatists that continues to claim lives. Mr Zelenskiy has said he would meet Vladimir Putin and involve the UK and United States in new talks to solve the conflict, but also promised not to lift the economic blockade on the separatist-held areas.  An advisor to the Kremlin told The Telegraph that a plan reported last week to give Russian passports to residents of these breakaway republics was meant as a test for the incoming Ukrainian leader. Before casting his ballot, Mr Poroshenko went to a service at St Michael's monastery in Kiev, highlighting his success in obtaining recognition for a new Ukrainian Orthodox church independent of Russia. President Petro Poroshenko casts his vote on Sunday Credit: Sergei Supinsky/AFP Ukraine is now the only country besides Israel with a Jewish president and prime minister, as both Mr Zelenskiy and Volodymyr Groysman have Jewish heritage. Sunday's vote ended a dirty campaign that culminated in a venomous debate at Kiev's 70,000-seat Olympic stadium on Friday evening. Mr Poroshenko has been accused of "black PR" against his opponent following a video showing Mr Zelenskiy being hit by a lorry. A format where the candidates asked questions of each other quickly devolved into recriminations touching on the scandals in which both have been embroiled. Returning to central motifs of his campaign, Mr Poroshenko said Mr Zelenskiy was unprepared to stand up to Vladimir Putin and suggested he was a puppet of self-exiled oligarch Ihor Kolomoisky, owner of the channel that broadcasts his shows.  Mr Zelenskiy pointed out that the president was the owner of a candy-making empire that until 2017 had a factory in Russia, accusing him of enriching his friends while in power. He repeatedly threatened to put Mr Poroshenko on trial.  The president dismissed Mr Zelenskiy's allegations as "rubbish". The spectre of Mr Kolomoisky will continue to loom over Mr Zelenskiy as president, however.  Just days before the vote, a court ruled that the oligarch's PrivatBank was illegally nationalised after a $5.5 billion hole was found in its accounts. Any move to hand the bank back is sure to be opposed by the international monetary fund, a vital creditor for Ukraine.  A Femen activist staged a topless protest outside a Kiev polling station on Sunday, warning that a Zelenskiy presidency end up being a "funny mistake". Mr Poroshenko said in his conciliatory remarks that he would not leave politics but rather continue to fight for reform. He and former PM Yulia Tymoshenko may be planning "to take their revenge during the parliamentary elections" in October, analyst Volodymyr Fesenko told The Telegraph. The prime minister's position could become even more important if lawmakers attempt long-discussed reforms to strip some powers from the president.  Russia's troll factory was also accused of buying Ukrainians' Facebook accounts to spread disinformation before the vote.  Last week, the authorities arrested seven men in what they said was a Russian plot to assassinate Ukrainian officials. One of the men injured himself when a car bomb he was setting in Kiev exploded in his face.

Tiger attacks zookeeper in front of visitors: 'He is a wild animal and was acting on instinct'

Posted: 22 Apr 2019 01:13 AM PDT

Tiger attacks zookeeper in front of visitors: 'He is a wild animal and was acting on instinct'A beautiful spring morning at the Topeka Zoo in Kansas turned tragic when a male Sumatran tiger attacked a keeper, inflicting wounds that sent her to a hospital.Although keepers are never supposed to be in the same space as the tigers, they found themselves together in the outdoor habitat that morning for reasons under investigation."There's some sort of error that occurred here," said Brendan Wiley, the zoo's director, told a news conference. He confirmed that several visitors to the zoo had witnessed the attack. The employee is the zoo's primary tiger keeper and had worked there for years, according to Mr Wiley, who noted that part of her job is to clean and maintain the enclosure. He said that the keeper was in stable condition and that the zoo was reviewing its safety protocols. The zookeeper, whom Mr Wiley declined to name, citing her family's need for privacy, suffered "lacerations and punctures" to the back of the head, neck, back and arm. She was awake and alert when she was transported to a hospital. The attack occurred about 9:15 am and the zoo's safety protocols immediately went into effect, Mr Wiley said. A radio call alerted the staff that there was an emergency, and the zoo called 911. Nearby staff members responded to the scene to secure the tigers, and an official made the decision to temporarily close the zoo. A firearms response team also was dispatched to the tiger exhibit, but zookeepers had successfully lured the tiger away by the time it arrived."Some of our staff witnessed some things that you hope you go through a career without witnessing," Mr Wiley said. The zoo has two adult Sumatran tigers: Jingga, a female, and Sanjiv, who was brought to the zoo in August 2017. Shanna Simpson, animal care supervisor, told the Topeka Capital-Journal then that Sanjiv "is the sweetest cat I have ever met."In October, Jingga gave birth to four cubs - three males and one female. The Topeka Zoo allowed Jingga and her cubs back into their enclosures Saturday afternoon, but Sanjiv would remain in holding overnight, Mr Wiley said.City spokeswoman Molly Hadfield said in an email that "nothing will happen to the tiger; he is a wild animal and was acting on instinct."Sanjiv is too valuable to conservation efforts to euthanise. Sumatran tigers are critically endangered, and only about 400 remain in the wild, according to the World Wildlife Fund. They are native to Indonesia, where deforestation, human encroachment and poaching have whittled their numbers to the brink of extinction. Some zoos participate in Sumatran tiger conservation programs designed to save the species, but these efforts are not always successful. In February, a male tiger brought to the London Zoo to mate attacked and killed its prospective female partner. The Washington Post

Serbia pledges 1 million euros for Notre-Dame restoration

Serbia pledges 1 million euros for Notre-Dame restorationSerbia on Monday said it will donate one million euros to help restore Notre-Dame Cathedral, after pro-government tabloids said the fire was "God's punishment" to France. The gift comes after two tabloids, Alo and Informer, said the blaze was divine retribution after Kosovo's flag was displayed inside the cathedral during World War I centennial commemorations in Paris last year. Serbia does not recognise the independence of Kosovo, a former southern province that broke away in a 1998-99 war.

Ilhan Omar: Somali Americans vow to stand up to Trump attacks

Posted: 20 Apr 2019 10:00 PM PDT

Ilhan Omar: Somali Americans vow to stand up to Trump attacksAfter being accused of endangering one of the city's US representatives, the president visited Minneapolis. Activists were there to meet himProtesters support Minnesota representative Ilhan Omar, outside an event attended by Donald Trump this week. Photograph: Kerem Yucel/AFP/Getty ImagesAs she stood in a crowd of protesters, helping hold a long "Stand with Ilhan" sign outside the trucking company in Burnsville where Donald Trump was about to speak, Habon Abdulle could not help but be swept up in the contradictory emotions of the moment. As a hijab-wearing Muslim woman who speaks with a slight Somali accent, and as executive director of Women Organizing Women (Wow) Network, a not-for-profit group dedicated to training and supporting East African immigrants who run for office, Abdulle had more than a passing familiarity with the some of the views reflected in signs and chants among a crowd of Trump supporters lined up across the street. There was the idea that Muslims were as a whole responsible for 9/11, and that the congresswoman Ilhan Omar and her supporters were affiliated with terrorist groups. There was another oldie-but-goodie: that the city of Minneapolis, like many urban centers dealing with an affordable housing shortage driven by an influx of new residents, is filled with crime-ridden "no go" zones governed by sharia law, where police supposedly fear to tread.> We thought we passed the collective blaming, the 'punish the whole for the actions of a few'> > Habon AbdulleAbdulle was still a little surprised to see such arguments expressed so brazenly, out in the open, just as she had been a few days earlier when Trump retweeted a video meant to show Omar did not respect the tragedy of 9/11."There are conversations in my community," Abdulle told the Guardian. "We thought we passed the collective blaming, the 'punish the whole for the actions of a few'. Those were things that we experienced right after the 9/11 attack. And many of us actually thought we were done with that. But lately, it actually feels that it's back. It's really weird, like: what's going on?"> On the pro-Ilhan side of the protests, two Muslim women, @nausheena and Asma Mohammed of @RISEsisterhood led many of the chants. > > Here, @HabonDaud explains why she thought it was important that Muslim women stand in the front. pic.twitter.com/83keO83kFU> > — Jared Goyette (@JaredGoyette) April 20, 2019She also saw reasons for optimism. A young Muslim woman walked in front of the pro-Omar group, wearing a black hijab and a keffiyeh scarf, holding a bullhorn and leading a chant. Abdulle watched as the crowd responded, many white and older Minnesotans included. That, she thought, was something she could work with."If we don't stand up for ourselves," she asked, "who will? We have to stand up for ourselves and they felt someone who looks like them was attacked. And we were all of us out there saying, 'No.' We are not going to accept. We have rights. It isn't fair that someone always has to other us. So, we went there because that was the right place to be that day."In the same moment, from the other side of the street, a tall man with a gray scraggly beard could be overheard cracking a joke."Hey, is that Omar? They all look the same to me."He might have been on to something, but not in the way he intended. The young Muslim women in the crowd did see themselves in Omar. That was why they were out in force.> I came here to support my sister Ilhan. She's been under attack and she's been facing death threats> > Ama Mohammed"I came here to support my sister Ilhan," the keffiyeh-wearing woman, Asma Mohammed, 26, told the Guardian. "She's been under attack and she's been facing death threats consistently, but even more so after Trump tweeted things about her that make her seem like she was sympathizing with terrorists."Mohammed said Omar was more than just a political figure: "She is my sister, as Minnesotans; she is my sister as another woman of faith; as another woman who wears a hijab and faces that kind of hate on the daily."Such a mix of outrage, disappointment and incredulousness, along with a growing sense of empowerment, was common among activists the Guardian spoke to in Minneapolis in the week after Trump's tweet.Omar's office was quieter than usual, declining media requests and not issuing statements, leaving Trump to deal with the fallout from the Mueller report without his favorite new foil to spar with. But if there is one thing Trump has been consistent about in his political career, it has been the targeting of migrants and Muslims in moves meant to appeal to his base. Many observers believe he will redouble such efforts as 2020 draws near.> She's anti-American. She's anti-Jews …Everyone knew the Muslims took down those buildings in New York> > Melody BlackOmar and Trump have become intrinsically linked, and not just on Trump's terms. Omar was elected to the House of Representatives in November as part of an anti-Trump blue wave that included Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan. Before that, she made national news when she became the first Somali American in statewide office, on the night Trump was elected president. Her victory party at a Marriott in downtown Minneapolis was a rollercoaster, tears and dancing underscored by a sense of girding for a fight."It's going to be very tough," Omar said then. "We have to figure out how to organize the community to prepare for what's to come. We have to amplify our voices of love against the rhetoric of hate."That fight has now come, though in a more direct way than many supporters thought possible. As Trump uses Omar to galvanize his base, he will inevitably rally hers. Last Monday's rival protests outside Trump's Tax Day event signalled such battles to come.> In this clip, @nausheena and Asma Mohammed of @RISEsisterhood explain why they came to the standwithilhan protest in Burnsville on Monday. pic.twitter.com/XQFVu8sxkz> > — Jared Goyette (@JaredGoyette) April 20, 2019"Omar really needs to go," said Melody Black, a Trump supporter from Red Wing, Minnesota, as a man behind her held a "Making America Great Again" sign."She's anti-American. She's anti-Jews. She's anti-Minnesotan. And everyone knew that the Muslims took down those buildings in New York. All of us watched it. And now they're saying that we're racist because we say it. But it's the truth."Omar came from Somalia and her father taught her exactly how to do what she's doing – including getting into government. They're trying to take over our government, the Muslims are."Trump supporters hoist a flag and give the thumbs-up. Photograph: Kerem Yucel/AFP/Getty ImagesOmar has indeed inspired other Muslim women to enter politics."Many women within the Somali community who never thought to run for office changed their mind," Abdulle said. The Minnesota state house now has its second female Somali American legislator, Hodan Hassan.Across the street from Black, Nausheena Hussain, a 42-year-old in a dark purple headscarf who directs a female-led Muslim not-for-profit organization, took her turn leading a round of chants. She said Trump's attacks on Omar had encouraged others."What I'm hearing, specially my community, is that she cannot be alone," Hussain said. "They are asking everybody to run for office that has those same progressive values, so she is not bearing the brunt of the responsibility by herself."And so I feel like 2020, you are going to see more people of color running for office, more Muslims or Muslim women, because not only do we not want her to be the only one there, but we have seen that she's able to fight and still get things done. More people need to back her up and to be part of that."Abdulle welcomed such words."That's how we are going to end the polarization," she said. "That's how we're going to end the hatred. That's how we're going to end the narrative that we are not American."I'm going to repeat the whole day long: we are American."

Meghan McCain Blows Up Over Mueller Report; Whoopi Goldberg Cuts Her Off

Meghan McCain Blows Up Over Mueller Report; Whoopi Goldberg Cuts Her OffThe ViewReturning from a week-long break, The View began Monday's broadcast reacting to the recently released Mueller report. Naturally, that segment ended with Whoopi Goldberg cutting off conservative co-host Meghan McCain during a tirade claiming Democrats are going to get President Trump re-elected by "demonizing" all Republicans. In response to Sen. Mitt Romney's (R-UT) highly critical statement of Trump following the report—which found Trump repeatedly tried to obstruct the Russia probe—co-host Sunny Hostin said the Utah senator would still likely not vote for impeachment if it reached the Senate. Romney and other Republicans, he said, will ultimately refuse to hold Trump accountable.Former Fox News host Abby Huntsman jumped in to debate both Hostin and co-host Joy Behar, noting that Trump's base feels like he "got a big win" from the report because the media set an expectation that "he was going to be booted out." Behar and Hostin, meanwhile, pointed out that Trump's overall approval rating went down to 37 percent—and that's where McCain jumped in for her take."Then what's the problem?" McCain asked. "So he's the worst president in history. According to our legal analyst, there's so much in this report that is damning and whatever. Then what's the problem? Why is everyone so nervous about 2020? If this is the nail in the coffin..."Behar snapped back that she is "afraid the Russians will steal the election again," which prompted McCain to call her "irrational.""What's the rational answer?!" Behar, McCain's regular sparring partner, exclaimed."Unfortunately for Democrats, you got to get out there and win over the voters you lost in the middle of the country," McCain replied with one of her most recurring talking points. When one woman in the audience applauded, McCain turned and thanked her."I always took Trump seriously," she continued. "You can go back and check the receipts when I worked at Fox and on my radio show. I always took Trump seriously. This mess that we all got ourselves into, I blame the left as much as the right, and the demonizing of all conservatives in this country, all Trump supporters in every way. You're getting him re-elected."When Hostin pressed once more, "But what about his behavior?" McCain replied, "It came out that there was nothing that collude—that he didn't collude." (The report actually doesn't make a determination on "collusion, which has no legal definition.)As McCain continued to shout, she then invoked her late father, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ). "I accepted the Magnitsky Award in London on behalf of my father," she exclaimed. "I'm someone who has been speaking out against Russia, by the way—let me finish!"As she continued to shout at her colleagues, Goldberg calmly mouthed to the camera that the segment had to wrap. McCain, meanwhile, continued to rant.Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Send it to The Daily Beast here

Here's An Idea: The Air Force Builds 200 B-21 Stealth BombersThe B-21 has disappeared into the "black" world of military technology, and will only reemerge when the bomber is ready. On October 27, 2015, nearly thirty-four years to the day after Northrop Grumman was awarded the contract to develop the first stealth bomber, the U.S. Air Force awarded Northrop a contract for a new bomber: the B-21 Raider. While many of the details of the Raider are shrouded in mystery, we do know a few things about it, and can infer others.(This first appeared in 2017.)The B-21 Raider bomber takes its name from both the twenty-first century and the legendary 1942 raid by Gen. James "Jimmy" Doolittle's force of B-25 Mitchell bombers against targets in and around Tokyo, Japan. In invoking the Doolittle Raid, the Air Force is drawing attention to attack's audacious nature, the strategic and tactical surprise, and the epic distances General Doolittle and his "raiders" flew to accomplish their mission.Recommended: Why Doesn't America Just Kill Kim Jong-un?

More than 60 million Americans currently depend on the Depression-era program for retirement and disability benefits.

Why the Smith & Wesson M&P Bodyguard .380 Is Tough to Beat

Posted: 21 Apr 2019 04:00 AM PDT

Why the Smith & Wesson M&P Bodyguard .380 Is Tough to BeatNewfound consumer interest in the subcompact handgun has led many gun manufacturers to introduce smaller––but still potent––pistols that can be carried discretely as a backup gun or concealed carry piece. But which ones are worth your time and money? One such example is the Smith & Wesson M&P; Bodyguard 380. One of the best of the new generation of subcompact handguns, it also has the most favorable dimensions and weight for those requiring packable firepower. The Smith & Wesson M&P; Bodyguard 380 is a second generation subcompact pistol that takes over from––and is functionally identical to––the first generation Bodyguard. The pistol is a small frame, double action semi-automatic designed for concealed carry. Unlike the larger M&P; handguns it is not a striker fired weapon, instead using a more traditional hammer and firing pin operating system. The gun lacks an external hammer, making it incapable of single action fire and the lighter trigger pull that entails. The double action hammer pull is rated by reviewers at 9.5 pounds and is described as "smooth" and "easy to use."

New mayor calls Istanbul rally for 'new beginning'

Posted: 21 Apr 2019 02:32 AM PDT

New mayor calls Istanbul rally for 'new beginning'Istanbul's new mayor on Sunday called for a rally to celebrate a "new beginning" urging people to unite after he won a highly contested race against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's ruling party. Ekrem Imamoglu, 49, of the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), narrowly edged out his rival to capture Istanbul mayor's office in a stinging setback to Erdogan's ruling AKP after a decade and a half in power. The Justice and Development Party (AKP) is still seeking a rerun of the March 31 Istanbul ballot, but electoral authorities on Wednesday handed Imamoglu his mandate after he won a slim 13,000-vote lead over AKP's Binali Yildirim.

Comedian Zelenskiy wins Ukrainian presidential race by landslide: exit polls

Posted: 21 Apr 2019 02:16 PM PDT

Comedian Zelenskiy wins Ukrainian presidential race by landslide: exit pollsThe apparent landslide victory of Volodymyr Zelenskiy, 41, is a bitter blow for incumbent Petro Poroshenko who tried to rally Ukrainians around the flag by casting himself as a bulwark against Russian aggression and a champion of Ukrainian identity. Two national exit polls showed Zelenskiy had won 73 percent of the vote with Poroshenko winning just 25 percent. Zelenskiy, who plays a fictitious president in a popular TV series, is now poised to take over the leadership of a country on the frontline of the West's standoff with Russia following Moscow's annexation of Crimea and support for a pro-Russian insurgency in eastern Ukraine.

‘Nothing wrong with taking information from Russians’, Giuliani says as Democrats keep Trump impeachment options open

Posted: 21 Apr 2019 10:14 AM PDT

'Nothing wrong with taking information from Russians', Giuliani says as Democrats keep Trump impeachment options openDonald Trump's personal lawyer has claimed there was "nothing wrong" with his campaign taking information from Russia, as the fallout and toxicity triggered by the publication of Robert Mueller's report grew.As Democrats said they were keeping open their options of seeking to impeach Mr Trump for his alleged efforts to obstruct Mr Mueller's probe, Rudy Giuliani went on the offensive, saying "any politician" in the US would have sought damaging information about an electoral rival."There's nothing wrong with taking information from Russians," Mr Giuliani told CNN. Asked by CNN host Jake Tapper if he would have taken information from a foreign source, the former New York city mayor replied: "I probably wouldn't. I wasn't asked. I would have advised, just out of excess of caution, don't do it."Mr Giuliani's defence of the president came after senator Mitt Romney, the 2012 Republican presidential candidate who lost to Barack Obama, launched a scathing attack on Mr Trump's campaign, following the release of Mr Mueller's report. While the report said it did not find evidence the Trump campaign colluded with Russia, it said the "investigation established multiple links between Trump campaign officials and individuals tied to the Russian government". It also said, Russia's alleged interference in the election was intended to help Mr Trump.Among those interactions was a now infamous meeting at Trump Tower in New York in the summer of 2016, when Mr Trump's eldest son and other campaign members, met with a Kremlin-linked lawyer who had allegedly offered incriminating information about Hillary Clinton. The president later said no such information had been provided, and that the Russian lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya, was seeking to lobby the campaign on overturning a specific US sanction targeting several Russians.Mr Romney, one of a just a handful of senior Republicans to voice concern about the report's finding, said in a statement released on Friday: "I am sickened at the extent and pervasiveness of dishonesty and misdirection by individuals in the highest office of the land, including the president."I am also appalled that, among other things, fellow citizens working in a campaign for president welcomed help from Russia."Speaking on Sunday, Mr Giuliani claimed Mr Romney's 2012 campaign had also tried to "dig up dirt on people". "Stop the bull. What a hypocrite. What a hypocrite," Mr Giuliani said. "Any candidate in the whole world in America would take information – who says it's even illegal?"Democrats are now confronted with a difficult choice of whether to push for Mr Trump's impeachment, something favoured by progressives such as Elizabeth Warren and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, or focus their efforts on defeating him in the 2020 election.Democrat Jerry Nadler, chair of the House of Representative's judiciary committee, whose panel would lead any impeachment proceedings, said his party would press ahead with investigations of Mr Trump in congress and "see where the facts lead us"."Obstruction of justice, if proven, would be impeachable," he told NBC News.Congressman Adam Schiff, chair of the same chamber's intelligence committee, told Fox News the issue of whether to seek Mr Trump's impeachment would be "very consequential". He added: "I'm going to reserve judgment on until we have a chance to fully deliberate on it."

Israeli F-16 Jets Blew Up a Syrian Missile Factory (And Russia’s Air Defense Missiles Didn’t Strike)

Posted: 20 Apr 2019 06:00 PM PDT

Israeli F-16 Jets Blew Up a Syrian Missile Factory (And Russia's Air Defense Missiles Didn't Strike)At 2:30 in the morning on April 13, 2019, around a dozen missiles tore over the night sky of Hama province, Syria, launched by Israeli F-16 jets flying over Lebanon. In response, short-range Syrian air missiles arced into the night sky trailing plumes of fire from their rocket motors. One or two can be seen exploding mid-air, possibly having have hit their target. However, as has happened in over 200 other Israeli air strikes on targets in Syria, the defensive fire proved inadequate. The weapons struck three Syrian targets. The first was a training base called the "Academy." A second site was reportedly a storage facility for surface-to-surface missile launchers located near the Masyaf National Hospital. Afterward, the pro-Assad Al-Masdar news agency published a picture of an annihilated M-600 Tishereen ballistic missile launcher. The M-600 is a Syrian license-manufactured version of the Iranian Fateh-110 short-range ballistic missile, a type Tehran has used for missile strikes on targets in Syria, Iraq and Israel since 2017.
