As head of Chicago's public schools since 2001, Mr. Duncan has tried some versions of merit pay and has opened more than 75 new schools, many of them charters, to replace low-performing schools. Such moves generated some tensions with the teachers unions, but he's been able to work collaboratively with them.

Indiana students hurt in school bus crash (AP) Posted: 17 Dec 2008 01:02 PM CST AP - A school bus carrying as many as 60 middle school and high school students on an icy road collided with a car Wednesday morning and landed on its side in a central Indiana farm field, the sheriff said. Dozens of children were hurt but authorities said none of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening.
