Pitt, Penn State most expensive public colleges in U.S.

(Reuters) - A study by the U.S. Department of Education shows that the main campuses of the University of Pittsburgh and Penn State University are the most costly four-year public colleges in the country. The study, which used tuition figures for in-state residents for the 2012-2013 academic year and was released on Monday, showed Pitt's tuition and fees, excluding room and board, at $16,590, and Penn State's at $16,444. The University of New Hampshire is a close third with the cost to state residents at $16,422. The national average for in-state tuition at public colleges is $7,407.

Advocates and creators of massive open online courses -- the free courses open to anyone with an Internet connection -- have high hopes for how the classes can help those hungry for a U.S.-style education. "We envision a future where everyone has access to a world-class education," Coursera, one of the largest massive open online course providers, says on its website. While the number of students taking MOOCs has exploded in the past few years, experts are divided on what impact the courses have had on international education opportunities. "There were big promises made about how MOOCs would democratize access to quality higher ed," says Ben Wildavsky, director of higher education studies at the State University of New York's Rockefeller Institute of Government and a policy professor at University at Albany--SUNY.
