The financial crisis hitting many of the nation's public schools is taking a heavy toll in cities such as Stockton, a blue collar port city that struggles even in good times.  Perched on the edge of central California's delta, about an hour south of the state capital, the city of nearly 300,000 has had some of the highest home foreclosure and unemployment rates in a state that has ranked high in both categories. U.S. News & World Report - The Project on Student Debt's recently released report, titled "Student Debt and the Class of 2009," estimates that college seniors in 2009 graduated with an average of $24,000 in student loan debt. For those continuing on to obtain advanced and professional degrees, the situation is even more dire. For example, the American Bar Association's Legal Education Statistics for the academic year 2008-2009 indicate that the average amount borrowed by law school graduates attending public school is $66,045 and by private law school graduates is $100,002.

AP - A Glock pistol fired at a Hawaii grade school was found by an eighth-grade boy in a secluded area of campus before it went off, causing another student to suffer minor hand injuries, the boy's father said Tuesday.
