Stricter state gun laws tied to fewer U.S. kids with firearms Posted: 21 Sep 2015 08:18 AM PDT By Lisa Rapaport (Reuters Health) - Children are less likely to carry firearms in U.S. states with more restrictive gun control laws, a new study suggests. Researchers analyzed data on teen gun possession from a survey of U.S. high school students in 38 states and then examined how aggressively each of the states regulated firearm use with policies such as background checks before sales, minimum ages for purchase, bans on military-style assault weapons and limitations on use in public places. In states with stricter gun laws, 5.7 percent of students surveyed said they had carried a gun in the past month, compared with 7.3 percent of their peers in states with more permissive gun laws. |
Lebanon says to provide schooling for up to 100,000 more Syrian refugees Posted: 21 Sep 2015 07:05 AM PDT Lebanon is to provide schooling for tens of thousands more children this year including Syrian refugees, the education ministry said on Monday, as the country tries to cope with the effects of the war next door. Funding from international donors, UN refugee agency UNHCR and children's fund UNICEF could see up to 100,000 more Syrian children, twice the number of last year, attend public schools for free, the ministry and organizations announced at a joint news conference. With Lebanon hosting the highest proportion of Syrian refugees - 1.1 million in a country of 4 million people - some public schools already have more Syrian than Lebanese students. |
Kenyan president says striking teachers' pay demand unsustainable Posted: 20 Sep 2015 11:52 PM PDT Kenya's president on Sunday urged teachers who have been on strike for about three weeks to return to work, saying their demand for a pay rise of up to 60 percent could not be met. President Uhuru Kenyatta told the nation that the state wage bill already accounted for more than 50 percent of budget spending and hiking teachers' pay by that amount would require raising taxes, borrowing more or cutting development spending. The teachers' strike and threats by other unions of solidarity stoppages has added pressure to Kenya's finances. |
