Explosive device discovered at Port Authority Bus Terminal, suspect arrested Posted: 16 Mar 2017 01:34 PM PDT A man with an extensive criminal record allegedly planted an explosive device at New York City's bustling Port Authority Bus Terminal during rush hour on Wednesday. The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey (PANYNJ) said several officers responded to a report of a suspicious bag at Deli Plus, an eatery inside the bus station, at 5:18 p.m. The deli caters to commuters in the south wing of the terminal's main concourse, which is located one block from Times Square. Arsenio Mason, 39, a resident of Jersey City, N.J., was arrested at 8 p.m. — roughly three hours after the officers first responded. |

Let them NOT eat cake: Venezuelan bakers face the president in ‘bread war’ Posted: 17 Mar 2017 12:32 PM PDT An organization that represents Venezuela's baking industry is pushing back against President Nicolas Maduro's crackdown on bakeries and bakers, whom he has blamed for the country's bread shortage. Earlier this week Maduro charged that bakers are waging a "bread war" by illegally using government-imported flour to make expensive sweet breads and croissants. |

Israel carries out air strikes on Syria: army Posted: 17 Mar 2017 12:23 AM PDT Israeli aircraft carried out several strikes on Syria overnight, prompting the launch of ground-to-air missiles in response, one of which was intercepted, the army said on Friday. It was the most serious incident between the two countries, which remain technically at war, since civil war broke out in Syria in March 2011. "Overnight... aircraft targeted several targets in Syria," an Israeli army statement said. |

Florida governor replaces anti-death penalty prosecutor Posted: 16 Mar 2017 05:02 PM PDT Florida Governor Rick Scott on Thursday replaced a local prosecutor who declared she would not seek the death penalty in a case against a man accused of killing an Orlando police officer and refused to recuse herself. In an executive order, Scott removed State Attorney Aramis Ayala, the elected prosecutor in central Florida's Ninth Judicial Circuit, and reassigned the murder case to State Attorney Brad King of the nearby Fifth Judicial Circuit. Ayala, at a news conference earlier on Thursday, said Florida's death penalty system was the cause of "legal chaos" and said she would not seek the death penalty against Markeith Loyd, charged in the Jan. 9 shooting of the policewoman. |

Greek anarchists 'likely' behind IMF Paris letter bomb Posted: 16 Mar 2017 11:55 AM PDT Investigators suspect a Greek anarchist group was behind a letter bomb that injured an IMF secretary in Paris on Thursday, the day after an explosive device was found in Berlin, sources close to the probe said. Fragments of Greek stamps were found at the Paris offices of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) where the letter bomb exploded, leaving the secretary with injuries to her face and hands. A far-left Greek group called Conspiracy of Fire Nuclei is "likely behind" the Paris attack, a Greek police source told AFP in Athens. |
Health care fight raises concerns about Paul Ryan’s political skills Posted: 15 Mar 2017 07:15 PM PDT Paul Ryan's leadership has long been questioned by Republicans who think he's politically naïve, and the current health care fight is raising new concerns about Ryan's political savvy, as the Republican speaker of the House faces the toughest test of his career. The Wisconsin Republican has always prioritized ideas and policy details above political strategies, and that's often been part of his appeal. The latest example: As the GOP health care bill came under fire last week, Ryan held an on-camera briefing with reporters and conducted a half-hour seminar on the details of the legislation. |
Great Barrier Reef will never be as pristine as it once was: scientists Posted: 15 Mar 2017 06:49 PM PDT By Colin Packham SYDNEY (Reuters) - Parts of Australia's Great Barrier Reef will never recover from the impact of unseasonably warm waters, scientists said on Thursday, as more of the World Heritage Site comes under renewed threat from a recent spike in sea temperatures. Warm seas around the reef killed some two-thirds of a 700 kilometer (496.4 miles) stretch of coral last year after warm water caused the coral to expel living algae, triggering it to calcify and turn white, a process known as bleaching. "Given time, coral can recover from bleaching but the problem comes when you get repeated events. |

Trade war drives fresh wedge between Ukraine and rebels Posted: 17 Mar 2017 08:42 AM PDT It was always an uncomfortable paradox for Ukraine's warring sides: while Kiev and Russian-backed rebels battled each other for nearly three years, trade kept flowing across the frontline. Now even those tenuous links have finally ruptured after Ukraine's leader Petro Poroshenko ordered a halt to all goods deliveries to the eastern separatist regions, ramping up tensions in the festering conflict. The move was a last resort for Kiev, as coal from their former industrial heartland remains a key energy source and authorities are reluctant to sever the few threads binding the insurgent fiefdoms to Ukraine. |

The iPhone 8 is causing problems months before it’s even announced Posted: 16 Mar 2017 12:29 PM PDT For every year in recent memory, the iPhone has been the phone to beat. Some years Samsung pulls it off, other years their ambitions, uh, go up in flames. Things are looking even more critical than usual this year: the iPhone 8 is slated to be a bigger change and a bigger deal than usual for Apple, while Samsung is looking to rebound from a disastrous 2016.
One sign that Apple is taking the iPhone 8 seriously are the supply-chain rumors surrounding OLED displays. Organic light-emitting diode screens are known for having better contrast, deeper blacks and superior energy efficiency compared to traditional LCDs, which is why Samsung and other manufacturers have used them for years. Apple has not, preferring to stick with the tech it knows and loves. But for 2017, things are changing, and Apple is throwing a wrench in everyone else's works. There's a limited number of OLED displays produced by manufacturers every year, and a new report suggests Apple has captured 14% of the supply. That's enough to cause shortages for other manufacturers like Huawei, which is reportedly unable to secure a supply of OLED displays for its phones this year. Samsung is believed to be Apple's supplier. Samsung itself produces OLED panels in-house, so the supply of OLED for Samsung's devices is secure. According to Digitimes,"about 70% of global output of OLED panels in 2017-2018, mainly from Samsung Display, will be consumed by Samsung Electronics and Apple, therefore limiting the supply of OLED panels to other smartphone vendors, said the sources." That's a problem for every company not named Samsung or Apple. The report says that Oppo and Vivo have supply of OLED panels locked down already thanks to pre-existing orders, but other manufacturers are going to be out of luck. That's actually rather bad news for consumers, as a lack of OLED panels means competing phones will be worse. That means we're faced with another year of choosing between Samsung, Apple, and no one else. The screen is a particularly important component this year in particular, because smartphone design is moving to take away bezels and make devices entirely out of screen. We've already seen this no-bezel approach with the LG G6 this year, and the Galaxy S8 and iPhone 8 are both expected to have an edge-to-edge display with no bezel, and no home buttons either. |

The legal path forward will be challenging, though, as lawsuits work their way through federal courts on opposite sides of the country, in Hawaii and Maryland. Donald Trump is killing Meals on Wheels and it's a serious problem Posted: 16 Mar 2017 08:40 AM PDT Put impaired veterans, elderly shut-ins and those who cannot leave their homes on the long list of American's that the president doesn't seem to want to support. President Trump is — you guessed it — coming under fire again for a newly proposed budget that would completely eliminate federal funding for the Meals on Wheels program. That's a problem. SEE ALSO: Texas legislator expertly trolls Republicans with bill that would fine men for masturbating Meals on Wheels provides food to the elderly, poor, disabled, veterans and others who often cannot leave their homes or prepare their own meals. Beyond providing nutritious food for the seniors, the service also supplies those that may lack social interactions with a friendly visit from a volunteer and a safety check to ensure they are okay. Under Trump's proposed budget, the entirety of the Department of Housing and Urban Development's $3 billion Community Development Block Grant program would be eliminated. These grants fund services for low-income Americans — including grants for Meals on Wheels. Because Meals on Wheels programs are typically funded by several sources, it's thankfully improbable that that Trump's cuts would end the services altogether, but the number of people the program is able to serve would be greatly reduced. The obviously problematic proposal has many people up in arms, and they're sounding off on Twitter. Iraqi forces edge into Mosul's Old City, Nuri mosque in sight Posted: 17 Mar 2017 07:05 AM PDT By John Davison and Ahmed Rasheed MOSUL, Iraq/BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqi forces battling Islamic State in Mosul edged into the Old City and around the al Nuri mosque on Friday trying to seal off a main road to prevent militants sending in suicide bombers to attack their positions. Troops are meeting fierce resistance as militants retreat into the Old City, where street fighting is expected in the narrow alleyways and around the mosque where Islamic State declared its caliphate nearly three years ago. A helicopter fired rockets into the area and heavy gunfire and mortar blasts echoed as troops made forays in districts near the Nuri mosque, where Islamic State's black jihadist flag hangs from its leaning minaret. |

Turkey threatens to send Europe '15,000 refugees a month' Posted: 17 Mar 2017 03:38 AM PDT Turkey's Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu has threatened to "blow the mind" of Europe by sending 15,000 refugees a month to EU territory, in an intensifying dispute with the bloc. Ankara and Brussels almost a year ago on March 18 signed a landmark deal that has substantially lessened the flow of migrants from Turkey to Europe. "If you want, we could open the way for 15,000 refugees that we don't send each month and blow the mind" of Europe, Soylu said in a speech late Thursday, quoted by the Anadolu news agency. |
