Voting rights advocates wary of Kavanaugh's nomination to Supreme Court Posted: 31 Jul 2018 10:09 AM PDT The nomination of Brett Kavanaugh, a federal appeals court judge, to the Supreme Court drew instant criticism from women's rights groups that consider him a potential fifth vote to curtail or overturn the right to abortion. But ahead of his confirmation hearing, voting rights advocates, alarmed about the trend toward disenfranchising young, poor and minority voters, are joining the #SaveSCOTUS and #StopKavanaugh movements. |

Two Koreas hold military talks as U.S. detects activity at North Korea missile factory Posted: 30 Jul 2018 11:33 PM PDT By Hyonhee Shin and Joyce Lee SEOUL (Reuters) - North and South Korea held military talks to build trust on Tuesday, while the United States detected renewed activity at a North Korean missile factory, casting more suspicion over the North's intentions. The meeting, their second since June, held in the border village of Panmunjom in the demilitarized zone (DMZ), was designed to follow on from an inter-Korean summit in April at which leaders of the two Koreas agreed to defuse tensions and halt "all hostile acts." North Korean leader Kim Jong Un also vowed during his separate summit with U.S. President Donald Trump in Singapore last month to work toward denuclearization, but there has not been a concrete agreement to accomplish that goal. |
A Trader Joe's shootout, an innocent death, and soul searching for LAPD Posted: 31 Jul 2018 01:00 AM PDT A makeshift memorial outside the Silver Lake Trader Joe's, where a young woman was killed in the crossfire between a gunman and police. To shoot an innocent bystander in pursuit of a violent criminal is every police officer's nightmare. In Los Angeles, with its vexed history of police brutality, racial tension, and high-speed car chases that local television networks feast on, it elicits a special sort of horror, a throwback to an ugly not-so-distant past that the city would much rather forget. |
Posted: 31 Jul 2018 11:05 AM PDT Nearly 20 major wildfires have torn through California in the last month, killing at least six people and causing thousands more to flee their homes. "What we're seeing over the last few years in terms of the wildfire season in California … [is] very consistent with the historical trends in terms of increasing temperatures, increasing dryness, and increasing wildfire risk," Stanford Earth System Science Professor Noah Diffenbaugh told The Independent. California recorded 9,560 wildfires in 2017 – about 2,000 more than the year before, according to the US Forest Service. |

Yemen rebels announce temporary Red Sea ceasefire Posted: 01 Aug 2018 03:29 AM PDT Yemen's Huthi rebels announced a two-week pause in Red Sea operations Wednesday, after attacks against Saudi tankers last week prompted Riyadh to suspend oil shipments through a key waterway. The Huthis are fighting a Saudi-led military coalition that backs Yemen's government. A spokesman for the coalition did not immediately respond to a written request for comment on the Huthis' unilateral truce. |

Italian ship accused of taking migrants back to Libya for first time Posted: 31 Jul 2018 09:05 AM PDT A rescue operation in which an Italian towboat rescued more than 100 migrants and returned them to Libya earlier this week may have been in breach of international law, the United Nations said on Tuesday. A spokesman for the U.N. migration agency said it could not establish the location of the rescue, which is key to establishing migrants' rights, although some other parties involved in the case have made contradictory assertions about the incident including where it took place. The rescue coincides with a growing perception among human rights groups that some European countries are taking an increasingly hard line in their efforts to cut the number of migrants arriving on their shores, after Italy's new government closed its ports to charities' rescue boats in past weeks. According to Spanish charity Proactiva Open Arms, an Italian towboat, Asso 28, rescued more than 100 migrants from international waters on Monday and took them to Libya, their country of departure. This would constitute a breach of international law, under which people rescued in international waters cannot be returned to a place where their lives are put in danger. Both the United Nations and European Union have acknowledged that Libya is not safe. A distraught migrant woman arrives at a Libyan naval base after being rescued by the Libyan coast guard Credit: Hani Amara/Reuters Italy's coast guard initially said on Tuesday that the rescue was coordinated by the Libyan coast guard, and later clarified that the operation had taken place in Libya's so-called "search and rescue (SAR)" area. The Libyan coast guard was not immediately available for a comment. Libya's SAR is not clearly defined but is widely understood to extend far beyond its national waters. Proactiva spokeswoman Laura Lanuza said its members learnt the rescue occurred in international waters because their boat Open Arms was nearby and they could listen to radio communications between the Italian ship and the Libyan authorities. The U.N. refugee agency said the operation "could represent a violation of international law," it said on Twitter. A spokesman for the U.N. migration agency said the agency was still investigating the case but confirmed the return of the migrants to Libya. Italy's Interior Minister and deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini Credit: VASILY MAXIMOV/AFP He said the Libyans first told him the rescue operation was carried out by "an unknown vessel", then changed their version and said the rescuing boat was Libyan. The head of mission at Open Arms, Fabrizio Gatti, contradicted the Libyan version and said a member of the Asso 28 crew told him over the phone the Italian boat carried out the rescue and was taking the migrants back to Libya. He said he had a record of the conversation. Asso 28 is now docked in Tripoli, the Libyan capital, according to Marine Traffic, a real-time information service on ships movements. Charities are at loggerheads with the new Italian government and its right wing home affairs minister Matteo Salvini who has adopted a hard line to cut the number of migrants arriving on Italy's shores. |
Investigators retrieve black boxes from Mexican plane after stormy crash Posted: 01 Aug 2018 01:53 PM PDT By Efrain Vazquez DURANGO, Mexico (Reuters) - Investigators sifting through the wreckage of an Aeromexico passenger jet on Wednesday located the plane's flight recorders, which may hold clues about what caused it to crash as it took off during stormy weather in northern Mexico. The Mexico City-bound Embraer 190 passenger jet smashed into scrubland near the runway shortly after the plane took off from an airport in northern Durango state on Tuesday. Nearly everyone on the flight suffered minor injuries, Mexican officials said. |

Zimbabwe elections: Three dead as opposition protest ruling Zanu-PF parliamentary victory Posted: 01 Aug 2018 07:08 AM PDT Clashes broke out among angry supporters of Zimbawe opposition leader Nelson Chamisa on Wednesday after official election results showed a ruling party victory in parliament. Three people were killed after the army opened fire in central Harare during demonstrations over alleged fraud in the country's elections. The man died after being shot in the stomach, an AFP photographer said, confirming that he died at the scene. Zimbabwe's ruling Zanu PF party won the majority of seats in parliament after sweeping rural constituencies by huge margins, official results showed on Wednesday, setting the stage for President Emmerson Mnangagwa's victory. Police padlocked the main gate. The opposition alleges the vote was rigged. Results of the presidential race have not yet been announced and the electoral commission says it will update on that "sometime tomorrow." Mr Chamisa has already claimed victory and accused the electoral commission of fixing results to favour Mr Mnangagwa. Riot police equipped with water cannon looked on as several hundred MDC supporters gathered outside Mr Chamisa's MDC party headquarters in central Harare and electoral commission where results were being announced. Tererai Obey Sithole, a 26 year old MDC member, told The Telegraph: "We are not going to accept any result that is against the victory of Nelson Chamisa." "We already have the results. Mr Chamisa won with 60 per cent plus. We are going to stay on the streets until ZEC announces the correct result." MDC supporters burn an election banner with the face of Zimbabwe's President Emmerson Mnangagwa Credit: Reuters "They have stolen the election," says 78-year-old Iddah Hanyani. "I want my vote back." The European Union observer mission said on Wednesday "a truly level playing field was not achieved" in the election. The EU mission pointed out the "misuse of state resources, instances of coercion and intimidation, partisan behavior by traditional leaders and overt bias in state media" but says Monday's election was largely peaceful in a break from the past. Zimbabwean anti riot police officers close the entrance to the Rainbow Towers where the election's results were announced Credit: AFP The assessments of Western and other observers, many who returned to Zimbabwe after being barred for nearly two decades, are crucial in the possible lifting of international sanctions on this southern African nation. The EU mission says this is a preliminary statement and more is expected on how the election results are handled and announced. Africa's tarnished jewel: how four decades of Robert Mugabe left Zimbabwe's economy reeling Parliamentary results early on Wednesday showed Mr Mnangagwa's Zanu PF party cruising to a big majority after picking up 109 seats against 41 for the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC). Another 58 seats are yet to be declared. The House of Assembly of Parliament has 210 seats and Zanu PF would need to win 30 more to have a two-thirds majority that would allow it to change the constitution at will. Profile | Emmerson Mnangagwa The trend in the parliamentary election was expected to continue when results for the president are announced. The MDC won in most urban centres, where it enjoys majority support. The MDC accused the election commission on Tuesday of deliberately delaying results of this week's vote to favour the ruling party, reporting irregularities in the first poll since the removal of Robert Mugabe in a bloodless November coup. Election observers from southern African nations on Wednesday commended Zimbabwe for a peaceful, orderly election, though they also identified some shortcomings in how it was conducted. The Southern African Development Community said Zimbabweans had the "opportunity to exercise their constitutional right," and applauded the government for allowing more international observers for Monday's vote. Urging protesters to refrain from violence, the group aslo referred to criticism of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission for the late release of the voters' roll, as well as bias toward the ruling party by state media and traditional leaders. |

Large crowds welcome home Congo presidential hopeful Bemba after long absence Posted: 01 Aug 2018 05:48 AM PDT By Amedee Mwarabu KINSHASA (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of cheering supporters greeted opposition leader Jean-Pierre Bemba on Wednesday as he returned to Democratic Republic of Congo after a decade in prison to submit his candidacy for December's presidential election. Bemba, a former vice president and warlord whose war crimes convictions at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague were quashed on appeal in May, is expected to pose a stiff challenge to President Joseph Kabila or his preferred successor. After touching down aboard a private jet at Kinshasa's N'Djili airport, Bemba, 55, dressed in a dark suit and a red tie, shook hands with family members and officials from his MLC party before getting into a white SUV to drive toward the city centre. |

"The globalist Koch Brothers, who have become a total joke in real Republican circles, are against Strong Borders and Powerful Trade," the US president wrote on Twitter early on Tuesday morning. Mr Trump's outburst came after the Koch brothers' political arm declared it would not help elect a Republican senate candidate in North Dakota, partly over his failure to challenge the White House's trade tariffs. |
