U.S. cardinal steps down amid widening sex abuse scandal Posted: 28 Jul 2018 08:28 AM PDT Pope Francis on Saturday accepted the resignation of Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, one of the U.S. Catholic Church's most prominent figures, who has been at the center of a widening sexual abuse scandal. McCarrick, 88, the former archbishop of Washington, D.C., is the first cardinal in living memory to lose his red hat and title. Other cardinals who have been disciplined in sexual abuse scandals kept their membership in the College of Cardinals and their honorific "your eminence". |
Fraud risk looms over Zimbabwe's post-Mugabe election Posted: 28 Jul 2018 07:57 AM PDT Zimbabwe goes to the polls Monday in its first election since authoritarian leader Robert Mugabe was ousted last year, with allegations mounting of voter fraud and predictions of a disputed result. Zimbabwe's military generals shocked the world in November when they seized control and ushered Mnangagwa to power, ending Mugabe's 37-year reign in a few short days. |

US government approves aid as California battles raging wildfires Posted: 28 Jul 2018 03:40 PM PDT The US federal government approved aid Saturday for California as thousands of firefighters battled to contain a series of deadly raging wildfires that have killed six people and destroyed hundreds of buildings. The largest of the fires menacing the state has nearly doubled in size, while another pushed thousands of people to flee and a third forced the partial closure of the popular Yosemite National Park. Two young children and their 70-year-old great-grandmother Melody Bledsoe died in the Carr Fire, their family confirmed to US media. |

Life on Mars: Japan astronaut dreams after lake discovery Posted: 27 Jul 2018 12:49 AM PDT Japanese astronaut Norishige Kanai came back to earth last month but is still dreaming of space, especially after the discovery of an underground lake brought mankind one step closer to unravelling the mystery of life on Mars. Kanai, who spent 168 days on the International Space Station, is firmly convinced that we're not alone in the universe and there is life out there. The soft-spoken spaceman, nicknamed "Nemo" for his background as a diving medical officer in Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force, blasted into space for the first time in December. |

Trump pledge EU to become big importer of US gas met with skepticism Posted: 26 Jul 2018 10:24 PM PDT President Donald Trump said the European Union would soon become a "massive" importer of US natural gas, but some energy analysts expressed skepticism at such an outcome. Trump, joined by European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker, said Wednesday that the two key economies reached agreement to boost trade of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and soybeans as they defused an escalating trade dispute. After Europe liberalized its energy markets, "the price is set between buyers and sellers at the exchange in Holland," he added. |

South Africa's Ramaphosa says to discuss nuclear with Putin in future Posted: 27 Jul 2018 08:45 AM PDT South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Friday that a private meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin this week ended with an agreement that the two countries would discuss a nuclear power deal in the future. Ramaphosa has put nuclear expansion on the back burner since taking office in February, saying it is too expensive, and has focused instead on pledges to revive the economy and crack down on corruption. "We have huge financial constraints, we are not able to proceed with a nuclear build programme," Ramaphosa told a news conference at the end of the BRICS summit. |
Intel Corporation (INTC) Earnings Beat Overshadowed by Product Delays Posted: 27 Jul 2018 08:05 AM PDT Intel Corporation (Nasdaq: INTC) reported second-quarter earnings and revenue beats on Thursday afternoon, but the stock dropped more than 8 percent on Friday morning after the company provided a disappointing update on its highly anticipated 10-nanometer processors. Analysts say product delays could cost Intel market share and make INTC stock a risky long-term bet. Intel reported second-quarter adjusted earnings per share of $1.04 on revenue of $16.96 billion. |

Pakistan parties demand new elections as Khan wins vote Posted: 27 Jul 2018 01:10 PM PDT Pakistan's main parties rejected the outcome of elections won by cricket star Imran Khan and announced protests demanding new polls Friday, after foreign observers criticised the pivotal vote over rigging allegations. The announcement by the All Parties Conference (APC), including the outgoing Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), is a fresh obstacle to power for Khan on a day when delayed results finally showed he had won an emphatic victory -- though he will need to seek a coalition to form a government. The nationwide election held Wednesday has been criticised by the United States, the European Union and other observers after widespread claims that the powerful military was trying to fix the playing field in Khan's favour. |

California wildfires: One dead as fire crews battle to contain blaze Posted: 27 Jul 2018 02:18 AM PDT Late on Thursday, firefighters found the body of a bulldozer operator who was hired privately to clear vegetation in the blaze's path, CalFire spokesman Scott McLean said. Three firefighters and an unknown number of civilians suffered burns during the fire, but information on the extent of their injuries was not immediately known. Governor Jerry Brown declared states of emergency for the three largest fires, which will authorise the state to rally resources to local governments. |

1,500 migrants have died in Mediterranean in 2018, Italy deadliest route -UN Posted: 27 Jul 2018 07:56 AM PDT By Stephanie Nebehay GENEVA (Reuters) - For the fifth straight year, at least 1,500 migrants have perished in the Mediterranean, with the route between Libya and Italy being the deadliest, claiming the lives of one in 19, the U.N. migration agency said on Friday. Spain, which has overtaken Italy as the preferred destination, has registered nearly 21,000 migrants so far this year, almost more than in the whole of last year, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said. Italy - whose new government has closed its ports to rescue vessels - has had about 18,130 migrants arriving by sea from Libya this year, with the rest going to Greece, Malta and Cyprus. |
Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. (CMG) Stock Rallies on Strong Earnings Posted: 27 Jul 2018 06:15 AM PDT Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. (NYSE: CMG) investors got more good news on Thursday when the company reported its third consecutive quarter of positive earnings numbers. Chipotle's growth finally seems to be back on track, but some analysts say CMG stock is simply too expensive to own at its current price. Chipotle reported second-quarter adjusted earnings per share of $2.87 on revenue of $1.3 billion. |
Malcolm Turnbull outrages Australia by eating pie with knife and fork Posted: 27 Jul 2018 06:22 AM PDT Malcolm Turnbull, Australia's prime minister, has been ridiculed for using a knife and fork to eat a meat pie, prompting claims he has upended a venerated tradition and left the nation "forever changed". In a move likened to Ed Miliband's awkward consumption of a bacon sandwich in 2014, Mr Turnbull sat down to eat a pie during a campaign stop in Tasmania and opted to use cutlery. Footage of the incident was posted on his Instagram account and quickly prompted fierce debate. "A pie that small should, and always will be, only eaten by a technique that is learned when you go to a school with a tuck shop," one person wrote on Twitter. "Two hands. Gently press down on the far side whilst slightly slurping the near side." A report on the Ten Daily website said "Australia Is Forever Changed" and suggested the incident would not have secured any votes for Mr Turnbull, who has been campaigning ahead of a series of by-elections on Saturday. "Remember the old riddle, Malcolm," said the report. "What's the best thing to put into a pie? Your teeth." Ed Miliband having trouble eating a bacon sandwich in 2014 Credit: Eyevine The incident was compared with former prime minister Tony Abbott's memorable bite into an unpeeled raw onion and with Australian opposition leader Bill Shorten's decision to eat a sausage sandwich by biting into the middle rather than starting at the end. Some critics also questioned Mr Turnbull's decision to forgo tomato sauce. "[Mr Turnbull] has become the latest to join the pantheon of Pollies Who Look Like Aliens Around Regular Foodstuff," said a report in The Australian. "It's easy to laugh, but it is a minefield." In pictures: Politicians and the greatest food faux-pas of all time However, Mr Turnbull received some support as defenders noted the difficulty of cleanly eating a pie without cutlery. "It's time we admitted there's nothing wrong with using a knife and fork to eat a pie," said 2GB Radio commentator Ben Fordham on Twitter. "Discuss." One response said: "It's about the enjoyment! If you like to enjoy it without the threat of a lava hot mouthful burning you from the inside out or cascading down the front of your clothes, then the plate, knife and fork is preferable! As my Nana said, 'To each, his own!'" |

The Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-hazards department has described the volcano as a "danger to direct safety to life" and warned people to stay three kilometres from its vent. ExxonMobil earnings jump but miss estimates; shares fall Posted: 27 Jul 2018 06:20 AM PDT Higher oil prices drove increased profits for US oil giant ExxonMobil, but the earnings report Friday missed analyst expectations due to natural gas outages and refining downtime. The results follow jumps in profits for Royal Dutch Shell and Total reported Thursday and illustrate the bounce from oil prices. The company said natural gas output was especially weak, diving 10 percent, due in part to downtime in Qatar, Australia and Papua New Guinea. |
