Slashed award accepted in Monsanto cancer trial Posted: 31 Oct 2018 06:08 PM PDT A cancer-stricken groundskeeper has accepted a slashed award in a landmark trial focused on weed-killer Roundup, setting the stage for an appeal by maker Monsanto. Judge Suzanne Bolanos last week denied Monsanto's request for a new trial but cut the $289 million damages award to $78 million to comply with the law regarding how punitive damages awards must be calculated. In her ruling, Bolanos gave Johnson the choice of accepting the lessened damages award or triggering a new trial focused on what Monsanto should pay in the case. |

Fifty companies, which employ 4.8 million people between them, signed the statement after the White House was revealed to be considering narrowing gender definitions to "immutable biological traits identifiable by or before birth", according to a department of health memo obtained by the New York Times. |
Pakistan hardliners vow no let up in paralysing blasphemy protests Posted: 01 Nov 2018 06:04 AM PDT Islamist hardliners incensed by the acquittal of a Christian woman for blasphemy vowed no let up Thursday to protests paralysing major Pakistani cities a day after Prime Minister Imran Khan vowed to confront them. Demonstrations broke out after the Supreme Court on Wednesday overturned a blasphemy conviction for Christian mother Asia Bibi, ending her eight year ordeal on death row but infuriating Muslim conservatives. One key protest leader has called for the assassination of the country's top judges and for mutiny against the army's top brass since the court's decision reignited the touchpaper issue. |
Divers recover Lion Air jet's flight recorder on Indonesia seafloor Posted: 31 Oct 2018 11:19 PM PDT Divers on Thursday recovered a flight recorder from the crashed Lion Air jet on the seafloor, a crucial development in the investigation into what caused the two-month-old plane to plunge into Indonesian seas earlier this week, killing all 189 people on board. One TV station showed footage of two divers after they surfaced, swimming to an inflatable vessel and placing the bright orange device into a large container that was transferred to a search-and-rescue ship. "I was desperate because the current below was strong but I am confident of the tools given to me," said navy 1st Sgt. Hendra, who uses a single name, in a television interview. After narrowing the possible location, "I started digging and cleaning the debris until I finally found an orange object," he said, standing on the deck of a ship next to his diving mate. The Boeing 737 MAX 8 plane crashed early on Monday just minutes after takeoff from the Indonesian capital Jakarta. Jakarta plane crash: Flight Lion Air JT610 It was the worst airline disaster in Indonesia in more than two decades and renewed concerns about safety in its fast-growing aviation industry, which was recently removed from European Union and U.S. blacklists. Navy Col. Monang Sitompul told local TV that was is believed to be the aircraft's fuselage was also seen on the seafloor. Officials said the location is about 400 meters (yards) northwest of the coordinates where the plane lost contact. Safety experts caution, however, that the data must be checked for accuracy against the flight data recorder. Several passengers on the Sunday flight from Bali to Jakarta have recounted problems that included a long-delayed takeoff for an engine check and terrifying descents in the first 10 minutes in the air. Lion Air has ordered 50 of the MAX 8 planes and one of its subsidiary airlines was last year the first to operate the new generation jet. Investigators say a preliminary report into the accident could be released within a month but complete findings will take several months more. The Lion Air crash is the worst airline disaster in Indonesia since 1997, when 234 people died on a Garuda flight near Medan. In December 2014, an AirAsia flight from Surabaya to Singapore plunged into the sea, killing all 162 on board. Indonesian airlines were barred in 2007 from flying to Europe because of safety concerns, though several were allowed to resume services in the following decade. The ban was completely lifted in June. The U.S. lifted a decadelong ban in 2016. Lion Air, a discount carrier, is one of Indonesia's youngest and biggest airlines, flying to dozens of domestic and international destinations. It has been expanding aggressively in Southeast Asia, a fast-growing region of more than 600 million people. |

"Yet at the same time I say that it's very important for the stability of the world, for the region and of the world, that Saudi Arabia remain stable," Netanyahu said. Mohammed bin Salman 'told White House' Khashoggi was a dangerous Islamist Posted: 01 Nov 2018 11:26 AM PDT Mohammed bin Salman, the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, reportedly told the White House that Jamal Khashoggi was a dangerous Islamist in a phone call days after the journalist was murdered. Crown Prince Mohammed told Jared Kushner, Donald Trump's son-in-law, and John Bolton, the president's national security advisor, that Mr Khashoggi was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, according to the Washington Post. The prince's private disparagement of the murdered journalist is at odds with his public comments, where he described Mr Khashoggi's killing as "repulsive" and said it was "very painful for all Saudis". His reported comments were made while Saudi Arabia was still claiming that Mr Khashoggi had walked safely out of the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, a story that has now changed several times. The remarks are likely to fuel suspicions among US senators that Crown Prince Mohammed ordered Mr Khashoggi's death but placed the blame on low-level operatives after the killing led to a diplomatic crisis. Saudi Arabia has arrested 18 men on suspicion of killing Mr Khashoggi but denied that Crown Prince Mohammed ordered his death or had any involvement in it. A demonstrator holds a poster of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi during a gathering outside the Saudi Arabia consulate in Istanbul Credit: YASIN AKGUL/ AFP Neither the White House nor Saudi Arabia has commented on the report about the October 9 phone call between Mr Bolton, Mr Kushner and the crown prince. Mr Khashoggi's family have consistently denied that he was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist group that was once tolerated by Saudi Arabia but is now banned. The Muslim Brotherhood is not considered a terrorist group by Western countries, although it is banned by several authoritarian regimes in the Middle East, including Egypt and the UAE. In his writings, Mr Khashoggi expressed sympathy for parts of the group's agenda and praised Qatar, the only Gulf Arab state to embrace the Brotherhood. Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, also reportedly called senior White House officials to defend the crown prince and emphasise that Israel sees him as an important partner in the Middle East. Mr Netanyahu and the White House both consider Crown Prince Mohammed an ally against Iran and hope that he will lead other Arab states in endorsing a US plan for peace between Israel and the Palestinians. Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly vouched for Mohammed bin Salman to US officials Credit: Ronen Zvulun/Pool via AP Israel's relationship with Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states has been warming in recent years and the once-secret relations are becoming ever more public. Mr Netanyahu visited Oman last week and two Israeli ministers made trips to the UAE, drawing protests from Palestinians who argued the Arab states were "normalising" relations with Israel while it continues to occupy the West Bank and blockade Gaza. Turkish investigators are continuing to search for Mr Khashoggi's body. One line of inquiry is that his Saudi killers dissolved it in acid, although experts said it seemed unlikely they could manage that quickly and within the consulate in Istanbul. |

Pittsburgh bids farewell to 97-year-old synagogue victim Posted: 02 Nov 2018 01:49 PM PDT Pittsburgh bid farewell Friday to 97-year-old Rose Mallinger, the oldest person killed in America's worst anti-Semitic attack in history and the last of the 11 victims to be laid to rest. Mallinger was shot dead by a gunman who reportedly yelled "All Jews must die" after bursting into the Tree of Life synagogue during Shabbat services on Saturday. Born in 1921, Mallinger may have been just three years shy of 100, but for the former school secretary, "age was truly just a number," her family said. |
Nigeria's army uses Trump's words to justify shooting protesters Posted: 02 Nov 2018 12:43 PM PDT The Nigerian Army has used President Donald Trump's own words about the use of force against migrants throwing stones to justify shooting at Shia Muslim protesters. The army posted a now-deleted tweet featuring a video of Mr Trump encouraging armed troops to shoot at any Central American refugees and migrants who throw rocks at authorities when crossing the US border. It was a response to criticism from human rights groups that the military had opened fire on peaceful protesters. |

Pompeo says 'handful more weeks' before U.S. responds to Khashoggi killing Posted: 01 Nov 2018 04:20 PM PDT Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Thursday it would be a "handful more weeks" before the United States had enough evidence to impose sanctions in response to the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. Pompeo, in an interview with KMOX radio in St. Louis, said President Donald Trump had made it clear Washington would respond to the killing. |
