Israeli strike kills 2 Hamas militants in Gaza: officials Posted: 07 Aug 2018 08:32 AM PDT An Israeli strike on Tuesday killed two militants of the Gaza Strip's ruling Hamas movement after shots were fired at soldiers, Gazan and Israeli officials said. The Islamist group's military wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, confirmed in a statement that the dead men were its fighters, naming them as Ahmed Murjan and Abdel-Hafez al-Silawi. An Israeli military statement, apparently referring to the same incident, said that the army returned fire after shots were fired at its soldiers from a Hamas post in the northern Gaza Strip, next to the border with Israel. |

Pro-regime Druze militia in Syria hangs IS member: monitor Posted: 07 Aug 2018 09:00 AM PDT Pro-government Druze militiamen hanged a member of the Islamic State group in Syria's Sweida on Tuesday, a monitor said, just days after the jihadists executed a young hostage from the minority group. IS abducted more than 30 Druze civilians -- women and their children -- from a remote village less than two weeks ago, during a brutal onslaught in the southern province. "A member of IS was detained during an attack against a pro-regime position in the Sweida countryside," said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. |
Twin blazes form California's largest ever wildfire Posted: 07 Aug 2018 01:32 AM PDT Two fires mercilessly roaring through northern California have grown so rapidly that they are now the largest ever to ravage the state, authorities said. Collectively dubbed the Mendocino Complex, the wildfires have burned through 283,800 acres (114,850 hectares) -- an area nearly the size of the sprawling city of Los Angeles -- and are just 30 percent contained, according to state fire authority CalFire. |
Donald Trump says rest of world must choose between trade with US or Iran Posted: 07 Aug 2018 04:18 AM PDT European companies should still be able to trade with Iran despite new US sanctions, according to minister of state for the Middle East, Alaistair Burt. Donald Trump tweeted "anyone doing business with Iran will NOT be doing business with the United States". The EU has launched a "blocking statute", designed to allow companies within the bloc to sue the Trump administration, if they are adversely affected by US sanctions, and has encouraged member states to continue trading with Tehran. |

The principal suspect, Siraj Ibn Wahhaj, also was charged with abducting his 3-year-old son from his home in Atlanta last December, prompting a cross-country manhunt that led authorities to the compound they raided last Friday north of Taos, New Mexico. The 11 children found alive, ranging in age from 1 to 15 years old, were placed in protective custody. |

It is a key moment for Ford, which is banking on the Mustang's wide appeal to help it grow global market share. |

US reimposes tough, unilateral sanctions against Iran Posted: 06 Aug 2018 09:08 PM PDT The United States re-imposed a wave of tough, unilateral sanctions against Iran on Tuesday, bringing back into effect harsh penalties that had been lifted under a historic, multi-party nuclear agreement that President Donald Trump abandoned in May. The first of two rounds of US sanctions kicked in at 12:01 am (0431 GMT), targeting Iran's access to US banknotes and key industries, including cars and carpets. Iranians are already seeing the effects of the sanctions, with Iran's rial currency losing around half its value since Trump announced the US would withdraw from the 2015 nuclear accord. |
Saudi Arabia ends medical programmes and moves patients out of Canada in deepening diplomatic row Posted: 08 Aug 2018 04:07 AM PDT Saudi Arabia is transferring all Saudi patients currently receiving medical treatment in Canada to different countries as the diplomatic row between Riyadh and Ottawa shows no sign of abating. All Saudi medical treatment programmes in Canada have been cancelled and arrangements are already underway to move patients out of the country, a state-run Saudi news agency said on Wednesday, citing Fahd bin Ibrahim Al Tamimi, the Saudi health attaché to the US and Canada. The move comes after Saudi Arabia took the stern step this week of expelling the Canadian ambassador and suspending all new trade and investment between the two countries – a retaliation for criticism of the arrests of Saudi civil rights activists. |

Three of the boys and Ekapol were considered stateless, even though they were born in Thailand, until local authorities checked their qualifications, including birth certificates, and approved their requests for Thai citizenship. |
