These are the airlines where you're most and least likely to be bumped from your flight Posted: 12 Apr 2017 05:52 AM PDT Now that consumers have had their rude awakening about the grim reality of overbooked flights, it's a good time to revisit a recently published study of the US airlines most likely to bump confirmed passengers off their flight. The biggest travel story of the week has undoubtedly been the incident of a passenger wrenched violently from his seat by aviation security officers on an overbooked United Airlines flight leaving Chicago O'Hare airport. Videos capturing the incident show the man screaming in protest, hitting his head against the armrest across the aisle and being dragged out of the plane, while fellow passengers express their outrage. |
Plane makes emergency landing on highway, ends up nose-down Posted: 11 Apr 2017 02:05 PM PDT BOWDOINHAM, Maine (AP) — A small plane made an emergency landing against traffic on an interstate Tuesday, struck a guardrail and came to rest nose-down, police said. One vehicle had to serve to avoid the plane, but no motorists were injured, and the two people aboard the plane suffered only minor injuries. |
Migrants traded in "slave markets" in Libya, U.N. agency says Posted: 11 Apr 2017 06:02 AM PDT Growing numbers of African migrants passing through Libya are traded in what they call slave markets before being held for ransom, forced labour or sexual exploitation, the U.N. migration agency said on Tuesday. West African migrants interviewed by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have recounted being bought and sold in garages and car parks in the southern city of Sabha, one of Libya's main migrant smuggling hubs. Migrants are traded for between $200 and $500 and are held on average for two or three months, Othman Belbeisi, head of the IOM's Libya mission, told journalists in Geneva. |

Nine dead as militants attack Philippine tourist island Posted: 11 Apr 2017 07:04 AM PDT Nine people including four Philippine security officials were killed Tuesday during clashes with suspected Islamic militants on a popular resort island as millions prepare to travel for the Easter holiday. The incursion allegedly by the Abu Sayyaf kidnap group on Bohol island would be the first on a key Philippine tourist destination in recent years by militants who pledged allegiance to Islamic State fighters and often targets foreigners in the lawless south. Just days earlier the US and Australia warned their citizens about possible "terrorist" kidnappings in Bohol or nearby Cebu island. |

Russia and USA, after Tillerson talks, agree modest steps to mend ties Posted: 12 Apr 2017 01:02 PM PDT By Yeganeh Torbati and Denis Dyomkin MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia and the United States agreed to set up a working group to try to mend their battered ties on Wednesday after U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson held lengthy talks in Moscow with President Vladimir Putin and the Russian foreign minister. It was not clear until the last minute whether Putin would grant Tillerson an audience, but the fact that he did is likely to be seen as a sign that Moscow has not given up on the new U.S. administration and wants to try to improve ties which both sides agree are languishing at a post Cold War low. A joint news conference between Sergei Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, and Tillerson showed how much work there is to do though as the Russian used many of his speaking opportunities to lambast Washington over its actions in Syria and what he said was its unhelpful foreign interference in the past. |

"Most of the people killed and wounded were civilians, but we don't know the exact target," interior ministry spokesman Najib Danish told AFP. Toshiba will do utmost to avoid Tokyo delisting - CEO Posted: 11 Apr 2017 03:48 AM PDT Japan's Toshiba Corp will make every effort to avoid being delisted by the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE), the company's CEO said on Tuesday, after releasing delayed third-quarter results with a disclaimer from its auditor. "The decision on any delisting is for the stock exchange to make," Satoshi Tsunakawa said at a press briefing in Tokyo. Such a disclaimer is one of several criteria the TSE can use to justify removing companies from the bourse. |
China internet outcry over United passenger fiasco Posted: 11 Apr 2017 08:04 AM PDT China social media users were in an uproar Tuesday over viral footage of a passenger dragged off an overbooked United Airlines flight, after some reports suggested he was of Chinese origin. The videos taken on the plane and posted to Twitter showed the man, reportedly identified by another passenger as ethnically Chinese, being forcibly pulled screaming from his seat by three security personnel. "He said, more or less, 'I'm being selected because I'm Chinese,'" fellow passenger Tyler Bridges was quoted as saying by The Washington Post. |

Protester in viral photo embraces woman she defended from Islamophobic abuse Posted: 11 Apr 2017 02:50 AM PDT A viral photograph of a young woman smiling as she confronted the leader of the English Defence League (EDL) has become a symbol of resistance against the far-right. In the photo, Saffiyah Khan is seen standing up to EDL leader Ian Crossland during the far-right group's demo in Birmingham on Saturday. Moments before the photo was taken — by Press Association photographer Joe Giddens — Khan had stepped in when members of the EDL surrounded a young Muslim woman. SEE ALSO: British protesters think they've kept Trump out for a few more months Days after the photo was taken, Khan has met woman she defended, Saira Zafar, for the first time, and the two shared an embrace in a video by the Guardian. Zafar explains that she had planned to stand towards the back carrying a placard stating "no to Islamophobia, no to war." But, EDL members at the rally began shouting racist abuse at her, like "you don't belong in this country" and "go back to where you came from." People also placed Islamophobic banners and EDL flags over her face and head. In the video, she thanked Khan for stepping in. "It's very important to have solidarity and to show that if something happens to this person, they're not on their own," says Zafar. |

US strike wiped out fifth of Assad air force, Mattis says Posted: 10 Apr 2017 07:11 PM PDT The US strike on a Syrian air base destroyed a fifth of the Damascus regime's remaining warplanes, Pentagon chief Jim Mattis said Monday as Washington fired a fresh salvo of warnings at President Bashar al-Assad. The public assessment of Friday's missile strike and the forceful rhetoric came as G7 ministers met in Italy to send a "clear and coordinated" message to Russia over its support for Damascus. The United States on Friday blasted 59 Tomahawk missiles at the Shayrat air base near Homs, which the Pentagon said Assad's jets had used to launch a deadly chemical attack on rebel-held Idlib province. |

U.S.-backed forces push back Islamic State in Raqqa campaign - officials Posted: 11 Apr 2017 07:04 AM PDT By John Davison BEIRUT (Reuters) - U.S.-backed forces fighting Islamic State in Syria advanced to within 2 km (1 mile) of a key stronghold near the jihadist group's de facto capital of Raqqa on Tuesday, and a counter-attack by the militants was repulsed, officials said. The multi-phased campaign by the Syria Democratic Forces (SDF), backed by air strikes and military advisers from a U.S.-led coalition, ultimately aims to oust Islamic State from Raqqa. Officials have given different estimates for how long the campaign will take, and the assault on Raqqa itself appears to have been delayed, after one high-ranking military official said it would begin at the start of April. |

20 of the world's most stunning theaters Posted: 12 Apr 2017 05:43 AM PDT From time immemorial, people have gathered around campfires to regale one another with songs and stories. The human yearning for poetry and community has not subsided throughout the ages, but the location certainly has. Shakespeare's Globe in London, England, and the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Italy, are not merely places to see a show — they are gateways to another world that are works of art unto themselves. U.S., EU rebuke Hungary over 'anti-Soros' education law Posted: 11 Apr 2017 07:55 AM PDT By Marton Dunai and Gabriela Baczynska BUDAPEST/BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Hungary faced criticism from Washington and Brussels on Tuesday over a new law they believe targets a Budapest university founded by U.S. financier George Soros that is viewed as a bastion of independent thinking in eastern Europe. The top U.S. diplomat in the region said the impact of the legislation on the Central European University (CEU) was a concern, while the European Union's executive Commission said it would be the subject of a debate on Wednesday. Domestic opponents of the new law, which on Sunday triggered some of the largest demonstrations against Prime Minister Viktor Orban's seven-year rule, consider it part of a wider crackdown on dissent and a political drift towards Russia. |
'Game of Thrones' creator George R.R. Martin is 'seeing red' over United Posted: 11 Apr 2017 02:41 PM PDT Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin gave us the Red Wedding, beheadings, and hordes of killer ice zombies. But even he can't stomach United Airlines. SEE ALSO: People are trolling United Airlines with these brutal new slogans "I don't often comment on current events, but the story about the passenger that United Airlines beat bloody and dragged off a flight — for no reason but to accomodate some of their own deadheading employees, and despite the fact that he had a ticket that he'd bought and paid for and was doing nothing but sitting peacefully in his assigned seat — has me seeing red," the author wrote Tuesday on his LiveJournal blog. Usually, Martin sticks to dragons, comic books, and the New York Jets on his blog, but this time he went after United Airlines CEO Oscar Munoz, calling for his resignation. "He's a disgrace," Martin said. Munoz finally actually apologized Tuesday for the incident that was caught on video and triggered outrage (and financial losses) at the airline. George R. R. Martin is pissed at United.Image: Frederick M. Brown/Getty ImagesMartin included a fake ad Jimmy Kimmel aired on his late-night show Monday that dragged United hard. After re-sharing the video, Martin said he was "outraged" by the footage and even more upset by the "mealy-mouthed corporate bullshit" the company and CEO put out. The fantasy author harkened back to days when passengers were treated as paying customers instead of cattle. Luckily, United doesn't exist in Westeros, or it might have to defend itself in trial by combat. WATCH: Here's United Airlines' adjusted 2017 pre-flight safety speech |
