Chicago 'walk ins': What are parents, teachers, and students protesting? Posted: 17 Feb 2016 09:17 AM PST Parents, students, and teachers are protesting at more than 200 schools across Chicago in a series of "walk-ins" against budget cuts and what they consider as failure on the part of Chicago Public Schools to meet the needs of students and educators. Planned by the Chicago Teachers' Union, the demonstration is part of a national campaign in defense of schools, organized by an umbrella group called The Alliance to Reclaim Our Schools. 6 Financial Aid Implications of Obama's Proposed 2017 Budget Posted: 17 Feb 2016 08:05 AM PST Every year around this time, the president of the U.S. submits a budget proposal to Congress for consideration for the next fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1. This request, first required under the Budget and Accounting Act of 1921 , lays out the spending and revenue plans for all federal agencies and departments, including the Department of State, Department of Agriculture and, of course, the Department of Education . The proposals are analyzed by the Congressional Budget Office and submitted to the House and Senate Budget Committee for consideration. |
South Dakota lawmakers move to ban transgender bathrooms Posted: 17 Feb 2016 06:10 AM PST South Dakota could become the first state with legislation requiring students, even those identifying as transgender, to use the bathroom corresponding to their gender at birth. South Dakota's bill – passed by the state legislature and awaiting the governor's signature – is the first to put school bathrooms under law, but it highlights the tense debate over LGBT issues that is playing out around the country, in which both religious conservatives and gay rights advocates fear their rights are eroding. The bill, which South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard (R) has said sounds like a good idea but he wants to study it before deciding, also requires public schools to find "reasonable accommodation" for students who identify as transgender. |
