Russia says Syria has right to chase rebels out of Idlib: agencies Posted: 31 Aug 2018 06:57 AM PDT Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Friday the Syrian government had every right to chase militants out of the rebel-held enclave of Idlib and that talks on establishing humanitarian corridors there were ongoing. The Syrian province of Idlib and surrounding areas are the last major enclave held by rebels opposed to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, a close Russian ally. Syrian government forces "had the full right to protect its sovereignty and to drive out, liquidate the terrorist threat on its territory", Lavrov was cited as saying by the Interfax news agency. |
Mars dust storm clears, raising hope for stalled NASA rover Posted: 31 Aug 2018 07:57 AM PDT One of the biggest Martian dust storms on record is clearing up after nearly three months, raising hope that NASA's stranded, solar-powered robotic vehicle, Opportunity, will soon come back to life. The storm was first detected on May 30, and the US space agency's 15-year-old rover was last heard from on June 10, when it went into "sleep" mode as dust blocked out the Sun and darkness enveloped the Red Planet. |

Suffering a stroke may double the risk of dementia finds large-scale study Posted: 31 Aug 2018 03:02 AM PDT In the largest study of its kind ever conducted, new UK research has found that people who suffer a stroke could be around twice as likely to develop dementia. After taking into account other risk factors for dementia, such as blood pressure, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, the researchers found that having a stroke still significantly increased the risk of the condition, providing the strongest evidence yet that stroke plays a role in dementia risk. |

Archbishop who called on Pope to resign says corruption reaches the top Posted: 30 Aug 2018 03:22 AM PDT Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano has gone into hiding since conservative media published an 11-page statement in which he alleged the pope knew for years about sexual misconduct by an American cardinal and did nothing about it. Vigano has been communicating through Aldo Maria Valli, an Italian television journalist who Vigano consulted several times before releasing his statement last Sunday when the pope was in Ireland. Italian media has reported he was upset because he was never made a cardinal by former Pope Benedict or because Francis blocked his further advancement in the Church. |

Judge gives U.S. more time to decide on retrying Manafort on deadlocked charges Posted: 30 Aug 2018 12:55 PM PDT U.S. prosecutors have more time to decide whether to retry former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort on 10 criminal charges that a jury deadlocked on last week, a judge ordered on Thursday. U.S. District Judge T. S. Ellis delayed the deadline for Special Counsel Robert Mueller to make the decision until one week after Ellis rules on any post-trial motions that Manafort may submit. The original deadline had been Wednesday, which prosecutors said would be difficult to meet because Manafort's lawyers had requested a 30-day extension to file their post-trial motions. |

People are really loving Tess Holliday's Cosmo cover Posted: 30 Aug 2018 08:10 AM PDT While some would argue that we've come a long way when it comes to representation and diversity in the media, it is still not every day you see a size 22 woman on the cover of a major publication. SEE ALSO: This Instagram poet is making young people feel less alone That's why the October issue of Cosmopolitan UK is already getting a lot of buzz, despite not having hit the stands yet. The cover girl is supermodel Tess Holliday. Dressed in a swimsuit, Holliday poses on the cover blowing a kiss to all the fat-shamers out there. The headline reads "Tess Holliday wants the haters to kiss her ass." Holliday shared the cover on Twitter with an emotional caption about the lack of representation of plus size women when she was younger. "If I saw a body like mine on this magazine when I was a young girl, it would have changed my life," Holliday writes. Phew, I'm literally a COSMO GIRL!! Can't believe I'm saying that! Thank you @CosmopolitanUK for this incredible opportunity If I saw a body like mine on this magazine when I was a young girl, it would have changed my life Issue hits stands 8/31! pic.twitter.com/sBYWY7nEwZ — Tess Holliday (@Tess_Holliday) August 29, 2018 A lot of women are echoing this sentiment on social media, wishing that they could show this cover to their younger selves.
