Thousands of Teachers and Students Denounce Budget Cuts in Nationwide Protests Posted: 17 Feb 2016 04:41 PM PST Raising signs that read "Support Our Schools," and "Actions Speak Louder Than Words," teachers, students, and community members held walk-ins across the country Wednesday morning to demand increased support for public education. The nationwide rallies were organized by the Alliance to Reclaim Our Schools, a nonprofit advocacy group comprised of teachers' unions and other groups, and interrupted classes in more than 900 schools in 30 cities across the U.S. One Chicago school community simply asked for more teachers, while another, in Los Angeles, protested expansion of publicly-funded, privately-run charter schools. |
This State Is One Step Away From Forcing Trans Students to Use Separate Bathrooms Posted: 17 Feb 2016 12:39 PM PST Federal officials from the Department of Justice to the Department of Education to President Barack Obama have affirmed that transgender students must be allowed to use restrooms that match their gender identity. On Tuesday, the South Dakota Senate voted to approve H.B. 1008, a controversial bill that would regulate bathroom usage based on biological sex, The Associated Press reports. If the legislation is signed into law by Gov. Dennis Daugaard, South Dakota would become the first in the nation with a bill that prohibits transgender students in public schools from using co-ed bathrooms. |
South Dakota governor considers transgender bathroom bill Posted: 17 Feb 2016 11:50 AM PST By Brendan O'Brien (Reuters) - South Dakota would be the first U.S. state to dictate what bathrooms transgender students are allowed to use in public schools if Republican Governor Dennis Daugaard signs a bill into law. The state Senate on Tuesday voted 20-15 to send a bill to Daugaard that requires transgender pupils to use restrooms and locker rooms in public schools that correspond to their gender at birth and not the gender that fits their current identity, legislative records showed. "This bill is about protecting young children who are too innocent ... to understand the complexity of life," Republican Senator David Omdahl said before voting for the bill. |
The Minority Divide Could Settle the Battle Between Clinton and Sanders Posted: 17 Feb 2016 11:46 AM PST For the time being at least, African Americans and Latinos could decide the outcome of the Democratic presidential campaign, and right now, they appear to be pulling in different directions in choosing between former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont. With both camps desperate to score victories in the upcoming contests in Nevada this Saturday and South Carolina the following week, Clinton holds a substantial edge over Sanders among black voters – especially older voters and women – while Sanders is dazzling young Hispanics with his promises of free health care and college tuition and liberal immigration reform. |
Chicago 'walk ins': What are parents, teachers, and students protesting? Posted: 17 Feb 2016 09:17 AM PST Parents, students, and teachers are protesting at more than 200 schools across Chicago in a series of "walk-ins" against budget cuts and what they consider as failure on the part of Chicago Public Schools to meet the needs of students and educators. Planned by the Chicago Teachers' Union, the demonstration is part of a national campaign in defense of schools, organized by an umbrella group called The Alliance to Reclaim Our Schools. 6 Financial Aid Implications of Obama's Proposed 2017 Budget Posted: 17 Feb 2016 08:05 AM PST Every year around this time, the president of the U.S. submits a budget proposal to Congress for consideration for the next fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1. This request, first required under the Budget and Accounting Act of 1921 , lays out the spending and revenue plans for all federal agencies and departments, including the Department of State, Department of Agriculture and, of course, the Department of Education . The proposals are analyzed by the Congressional Budget Office and submitted to the House and Senate Budget Committee for consideration. |
South Dakota lawmakers move to ban transgender bathrooms Posted: 17 Feb 2016 06:10 AM PST South Dakota could become the first state with legislation requiring students, even those identifying as transgender, to use the bathroom corresponding to their gender at birth. South Dakota's bill – passed by the state legislature and awaiting the governor's signature – is the first to put school bathrooms under law, but it highlights the tense debate over LGBT issues that is playing out around the country, in which both religious conservatives and gay rights advocates fear their rights are eroding. The bill, which South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard (R) has said sounds like a good idea but he wants to study it before deciding, also requires public schools to find "reasonable accommodation" for students who identify as transgender. |
Palestinian teachers say a dozen arrested for striking Posted: 17 Feb 2016 06:08 AM PST RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) — Palestinian teachers say police have detained about a dozen of them for organizing a two-day school strike. |
Explore the Pros, Cons of Gamification in Online Education Posted: 17 Feb 2016 06:00 AM PST In his online course on ethical decision-making, Greg Andres, a philosophy lecturer at the University of Waterloo in Canada, has students compete for the top spot on the class' leader board. Andres' class is an example of gamification, a term that generally refers to the implementation of different game-design elements -- such as competition or the earning of points or badges -- into various settings. In recent years, gamification has become more prevalent in the corporate world and has extended into higher education, including online. |
Illinois governor's new budget aims to keep schools funded Posted: 16 Feb 2016 06:15 PM PST With most of Illinois' fiscal 2016 budget mired in a political impasse, Republican Governor Bruce Rauner on Wednesday will announce a plan to ensure state money continues to flow to public schools in fiscal 2017, according to his office. In his second budget address, Rauner will announce that Illinois will fully fund K-12 schools for the first time in seven years under a bill to be introduced by Republican leaders of the Democrat-controlled legislature. A fiscal 2016 school funding bill passed by Democrats last year marked the only major budget measure Rauner initially signed, leaving the fifth-largest U.S. state to operate on court-ordered spending and ongoing appropriations for bonds and pensions for the fiscal year that began July 1. |
