Researchers analyzed data on teen gun possession from a survey of U.S. high school students in 38 states and then examined how aggressively each of the states regulated firearm use with policies such as background checks before sales, minimum ages for purchase, bans on military-style assault weapons and limitations on use in public places. In states with stricter gun laws, 5.7 percent of students surveyed said they had carried a gun in the past month, compared with 7.3 percent of their peers in states with more permissive gun laws.

Funding from international donors, UN refugee agency UNHCR and children's fund UNICEF could see up to 100,000 more Syrian children, twice the number of last year, attend public schools for free, the ministry and organizations announced at a joint news conference. With Lebanon hosting the highest proportion of Syrian refugees - 1.1 million in a country of 4 million people - some public schools already have more Syrian than Lebanese students.

President Uhuru Kenyatta told the nation that the state wage bill already accounted for more than 50 percent of budget spending and hiking teachers' pay by that amount would require raising taxes, borrowing more or cutting development spending. The teachers' strike and threats by other unions of solidarity stoppages has added pressure to Kenya's finances.
