The Crisis No One Is Fixing: Our Schools Lose More Teachers Than They Keep Posted: 15 May 2015 04:20 PM PDT In the next decade or so, America's public schools will lose a million educators—about half of all teachers. Not only are schools losing veteran teachers to retirement, but they are also having trouble keeping new educators in the classroom and attracting students to the profession. Many aspiring educators like 21-year old UCLA graduate Rafi Silva, have expressed reluctance to enter the profession at all. Silva is featured in the film The Road to Teach, a documentary that followed him and two other millennials on a cross-country journey to explore the teaching profession. |
When It Comes to Bullying, Mean Girls Still Rule the School Posted: 15 May 2015 02:27 PM PDT If you've seen the movie Mean Girls, you'll recall that it didn't take much for a student to end up in the "Burn Book"—the notebook where the popular clique of high school girls, the Plastics, jotted down horrible comments and gossip about other, mostly female students. The film's premise of girls being bullied seems to be reflected in data from a new survey from the U.S. Department of Education. |
Bullying declines in US schools as more students embrace diversity, tolerance Posted: 15 May 2015 12:00 PM PDT The portion of students who experience behaviors used to measure bullying – such as being threatened, pushed, made fun of, or excluded – dropped to 22 percent in 2012-13, the first significant decline since 2005, the US Department of Education reported Friday. The data come from a survey of 12- to 18-year-olds by the National Center for Education Statistics. Since the start of the measurement in 2005, the percentage had ranged from 28 to 32 percent. "As schools become safer, students are better able to thrive academically and socially," Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said in a statement. "Even though we've come a long way over the past few years in educating the public about the health and educational impacts that bullying can have on students, we still have more work to do to ensure the safety of our nation's children," he added. |

To avoid late payments, consider scheduling automatic payments, setting calendar reminders before due dates and downloading an app like Mint Bills that aggregates all your bills in one place. |
Two Florida students shot, wounded while riding school bus Posted: 14 May 2015 09:04 PM PDT (Reuters) - Two teenage girls riding on a Florida school bus full of students were shot and wounded on Thursday when a person opened fire at the vehicle, officials said. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office provided limited details about the shooting, which occurred around 4 p.m. local time, but said two girls, aged 14 and 15, were struck and authorities were searching for two male suspects. "When I got word of the shooting there was a deep anger that permeated my whole being," said Duval County Public Schools Superintendent Nikolai Vitti. |
