Youth who receive tobacco coupons may be more susceptible to smoking Posted: 06 May 2015 11:37 AM PDT By Kathryn Doyle (Reuters Health) - Middle and high school students exposed to tobacco coupons were more likely to find smoking "cool" and less likely to feel confident in quitting if they already smoked, according to recent U.S. survey data. Some kids may encounter the coupons for free or discounted tobacco products passively, via direct mail campaigns aimed at their parents, but the coupons are also often sent by email and are readily available on the Internet. "In previous studies, my collaborators and I found that exposure to cigarette coupons predicts smoking progression in youth and young adults and reduces likelihood of cessation among general adult smokers from the U.S. upper Midwest," said the study's author, Dr. Kelvin Choi of the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities in Bethesda, Maryland. This new national sample of middle and high school students who were included in the current analysis can be generalized to youth across the United States, Choi told Reuters Health in a statement. |
Get Ready for Upcoming Federal Student Aid PIN Changes Posted: 06 May 2015 07:00 AM PDT On May 10, the U.S. Department of Education plans to release a new Federal Student Aid ID feature. The FSA ID will let students, borrowers and parents authenticate their identities across multiple FSA websites. Previously, verifying someone's identity was the job of the Federal Student Aid PIN, and as you would expect, that role is an important one. On FSA websites, people can access their federal student aid information, as well as officially sign loan documents. |

Chicago asks school teachers to take 7 percent pay cut: union Posted: 05 May 2015 07:26 PM PDT By Mary Wisniewski CHICAGO (Reuters) - Three years after a public school strike, Chicago teacher contract talks are off to a rocky start, with the debt-burdened district demanding a 7 percent pay cut, union officials said on Tuesday. The Chicago Teachers Union said in a statement it was "highly insulted" by the district's demands, which include increases in health insurance premiums. Getting to a new contract, without another strike, will be the first major test of Mayor Rahm Emanuel's second term. Chicago Public Schools Chief Executive Officer Barbara Byrd-Bennett, appointed by Emanuel, took a leave of absence in April pending the outcome of a federal probe into a contract awarded to a company that had employed her. |
