Teargas fired on protesting teachers, students in Nigeria Posted: 29 Apr 2014 10:54 AM PDT Nigerian police fired teargas at teachers and students and shot live rounds into the air as they tried to disperse a rally over college closures on Tuesday, protesters said. The march, in the capital Abuja, was called by two academic unions who have been on strike for several months, but protesting teachers were also joined by a number of students. The organisers of the rally, the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) and the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), have been demanding facility improvements at a range of technical colleges across the country. The march, which the unions said involved about 100 people, began at Abuja's Eagle Square -- which is often the site of political rallies -- before moving towards the parliament, where organisers had planned to formally present their grievances to lawmakers. |

White House Task Force on College Sexual Assault Releases First Report Posted: 28 Apr 2014 08:28 PM PDT The White House Task Force to Protect Students From Sexual Assault released its first report today, with initial recommendations for how college campuses can better handle sexual assaults. There has been a preponderance of sexual assault cases on college campuses across the country, and often schools' reactions to those cases has been woefully lacking. Just today, the Department of Education ruled that Tufts University violated Title IX in its handling of sexual assaults. President Obama created the task force in January to figure out how schools could better prevent sexual assaults from happening and better handle things when they do. |
White House pushes colleges to crack down on sexual assaults Posted: 28 Apr 2014 06:59 PM PDT By Jeff Mason WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House will press U.S. colleges and universities on Tuesday to do more to curb sexual assaults on students while it launches a new website, NotAlone.gov, to help victims find resources and report crimes. The move comes after a three-month study by a task force established by President Barack Obama in January to help identify ways to protect students from sexual violence. "Colleges and universities need to face the facts about sexual assault. No more turning a blind eye or pretending it doesn't exist," Vice President Joe Biden said in a statement released on Monday evening. |
