Department of Education Rules Tufts University Violated Title IX

Posted: 28 Apr 2014 03:36 PM PDT

Department of Education Rules Tufts University Violated Title IXThe U.S. Department of Education announced Monday that Tufts University was found in violation of Title IX for its handing of sexual assault and harassment complaints on campus. The Office for Civil Rights announced the conclusion to its investigation in a press release late Monday, stating that Tufts, with three campuses across Massachusetts,  "did not investigate alleged sexual assaults when notified unless the allegations were part of a written complaint," and failed to provide the appropriate programs and securities to protect a student during a sexual assault investigation. Students who brought forwards complaints also faced "a hostile environment," and were "denied... access to educational opportunities at the university." When separating the student who filed a complaint from their accuser, the school also favored the accuser and "disproportionately burdened the student." The school does not have a good reputation for handing sexual assault cases.  Tufts believes the programs put in place over the course of the OCR's investigation were sufficient.

US high school graduation rates hit historic high

Posted: 28 Apr 2014 02:34 PM PDT

For the first time since such data has been kept, 80 percent of America's high schoolers are graduating in four years, according to new data from the Department of Education. Some believe the US graduation rate is on track to hit 90 percent by 2020. Gains were made by all disadvantaged groups, including low-income students, students of color, students with disabilities, and English language learners – though significant gaps remain for all those groups, and there are large disparities in the graduation rates for different states. After 30 years of flat-lining high school graduation rates and four successive US presidents setting a 90 percent graduation goal, finally over the last decade we've seen a 10 percentage point gain," says John Bridgeland, coauthor of the 2014 Building a Grad Nation report, which was also released Monday.

U.S. high school graduation rate reaches record 80 percent

U.S. President Barack Obama comforts a student overcome with emotion after speaking with the graduating class from Booker T. Washington High School in MemphisBy Elvina Nawaguna WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. high school graduation rate reached a record 80 percent in the 2011-2012 academic year, the Obama administration said on Monday in a report that tallied the number of students graduating within four years of starting high school. The 80 percent rate for the 2011-2012 school year compares with a graduation rate of 79 percent in 2010-2011, according to National Center for Education Statistics, an agency within the U.S. Department of Education that collects and analyzes education data. The Obama administration has credited its Race to the Top competitive grant program with raising the graduation rates. Critics of Race to the Top have said that program widens the gap between higher-performing schools and lower-performing ones because schools that are already successful to begin with may have an edge over struggling schools in putting together winning bids.

Study: Record High School Graduation Rate On Track for 2020

Posted: 28 Apr 2014 05:00 AM PDT

The U.S. is on track to graduate a record number of high school students by 2020. That's the good news in a report released today, but the bad news is that certain groups of students -- special education, low-income and minority students -- continue to lag behind. The nationwide graduation rate reached 80 percent in 2012, the highest in U.S. history, and is on pace to reach 90 percent by 2020, according to the 2014 "Building a Grad Nation" report released by Civic Enterprises, the Everyone Graduates Center at the School of Education at Johns Hopkins University, America's Promise Alliance and the Alliance for Excellent Education. But for the majority of the states, achieving a 90 percent overall graduation rate will not be possible without significant improvements in graduation rates for these populations of students, according to the report.

MOKPO, South Korea (AP) — The confirmed death toll from South Korea's ferry disaster rose past 50 on Sunday as divers finally found a way inside the sunken vessel, quickly discovering more than a dozen bodies in what almost certainly is just the beginning of a massive and grim recovery effort. About 250 people are still missing from the ship, the vast majority of them high school students who had been on a holiday trip. Anguished families, waiting on a nearby island and fearful they might be left without even their loved ones' bodies, have vented their fury, blocking the prime minister's car during a visit and attempting a long protest march to the presidential Blue House.
