Macron Visits Torched Building in First Trip Outside Paris Since Saturday Violence Posted: 04 Dec 2018 09:49 AM PST The countryside trip is Macron's first move outside Paris, after the capital and other major towns across the country were torn by violent spats between rioters and police forces on Saturday. Puy-en-Velay, in the Haute-Loire department, is the original constituency of The Republicans party chief and vocal Macron opponent Laurent Wauquiez. Macron arrived in Puy-en-Velay a few hours after his Prime Minister Edouard Philippe unveiled a series of measures to qualm the protest movement. |

UN Security Council to meet on Iran missile test Posted: 03 Dec 2018 04:28 PM PST The UN Security Council will meet behind closed doors on Tuesday at the request of France and Britain after they accused Iran of test-firing a medium-range missile at the weekend, diplomats said. The United States said the missile launch on Saturday was a violation of a UN resolution that endorsed the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, from which Washington has withdrawn. |

Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko, Anne McClain of NASA and David Saint-Jacques of the Canadian Space Agency blasted off from Kazakhstan's Baikonur Cosmodrome earlier in the day. |
France's Macron hunts for way out of 'yellow vest' crisis Posted: 03 Dec 2018 03:47 PM PST The "yellow vest" revolt caught Macron unawares when it erupted on Nov. 17 and poses a formidable challenge to the 40-year-old as he tries to counter a plunge in popularity over his economic reforms, which are seen as favoring the wealthy. Riot police were overrun on Saturday as protesters wrought havoc in Paris's fanciest neighborhoods, torching dozens of cars, looting boutiques and smashing up luxury private homes and cafes in the worst disturbances the capital has seen since 1968. Emerging from Prime Minister Edouard Philippe's office, opposition leader Laurent Wauquiez of the centre-right Les Republicains said the government failed to understand the depth of public anger. |

Mueller prosecutors ‘tying up loose ends’ as Trump-Russia investigation nears endgame Posted: 04 Dec 2018 02:31 AM PST Special prosecutor Robert Mueller is reportedly close to concluding his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election. Suggestions the former FBI director is reaching the endgame of his near two-year investigation into possible collusion between Moscow and the Trump campaign come in a week where prosecutors are also set to publish memos on three key defendants. The documents are likely to reveal to what extent Donald Trump's former national security adviser Michael Flynn, long-time lawyer Michael Cohen and campaign chief Paul Manafort cooperated with the probe. |

Wall Street dives on angst over growth, US-China truce Posted: 04 Dec 2018 02:27 PM PST Wall Street stocks plunged Tuesday on worries about US economic growth and revived doubts about trade wars as the Trump administration sent mixed signals on their detente with China. A day after global stocks rallied on a weekend US-China announcement suspending new tariffs, international markets mostly pulled back as investor focus shifted to the lack of concrete progress in reaching a long-term agreement to the dispute. "Can the US and China really resolve their differences in 90 days?" asked Rodrigo Catril, senior strategist at National Australia Bank. |

Shell to set sector-leading emissions targets after investor pressure Posted: 03 Dec 2018 09:16 AM PST Rivals BP and Total have already set short-term targets on reducing carbon dioxide emissions, but these are limited to their own operations. Shell's targets, which will be introduced in 2020, will be more extensive with inclusion of the so-called Scope 3 emissions from the burning of fuels sold to millions of customers around the world, the company said. Monday's move marks a change of tack for Shell Chief Executive Ben van Beurden, who had previously resisted setting hard goals, saying it would be "foolhardy" to expose Shell to legal challenges. |

Iran's Rouhani threatens to cut off Gulf oil Posted: 04 Dec 2018 01:13 AM PST Iran's President Hassan Rouhani struck a defiant stance against US sanctions on Tuesday, renewing his threat to cut off international oil sales from the Gulf. "America should know... it is not capable of preventing the export of Iran's oil," Rouhani said at a televised rally in Semnan province. "If it ever tries to do so... no oil will be exported from the Persian Gulf," he added. |
German conservative questions future of Russian gas pipeline Posted: 03 Dec 2018 08:08 AM PST A key ally of German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday raised questions about the future of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline amid growing concern about Russia's seizure of three Ukrainian ships and their crew off the coast of Russian-annexed Crimea. Juergen Hardt, foreign policy spokesman for Merkel's conservatives in parliament, told Reuters that further sanctions against Russia would have to be considered unless diplomatic efforts were able to resolve the conflict. "When diplomatic efforts to ease tensions fail, we cannot ignore the question of whether it is responsible to further increase the dependence of Germany and the European Union on Russia gas," he said. |

Why Bush 41, a Great President, Won Only One Term Posted: 03 Dec 2018 03:30 AM PST The passing of George H. W. Bush has brought forth a multitude of tributes praising his public leadership and personal virtue — to which I say "Amen." Bush, in my opinion, was one of the great presidents of the 20th century. It is not my purpose here to enumerate the reasons that Bush 41 was such a good president. |

US farmers more cautious than hopeful after China trade deal Posted: 03 Dec 2018 05:54 PM PST President Donald Trump says American farmers will see immediate benefits from the trade detente with Beijing, but farm belt representatives are still cautious about declaring victory. Trump's comments were followed by White House economic advisor Larry Kudlow, who told a press briefing that he expects Chinese tariffs on US farm goods would be removed "quickly," without elaborating. US soybean exports to China since September 1 have fallen to 339,000 tons from nearly 15 million tons in the year-ago period. |
