Graham Vows to Block GOP Agenda Until CIA Briefs Congress on Khashoggi Murder Posted: 28 Nov 2018 10:53 AM PST Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina said Wednesday that he would not support a new government-funding bill or the confirmation of Republican judicial nominees until the CIA is allowed to brief lawmakers on the assassination of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. If that briefing is not given soon, it's gonna be hard for me to vote for any spending bill," Graham told reporters on Capitol Hill. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Secretary of Defense James Mattis gave Congress a classified briefing on Khashoggi's assassination at the hands of Saudi agents Wednesday morning, but CIA director Gina Haspel was not present. |

U.S. indicts Iranian hackers responsible for deploying 'SamSam' ransomware Posted: 28 Nov 2018 10:17 AM PST The United States on Wednesday indicted two Iranians for launching a major cyber attack using ransomware known as "SamSam" and sanctioned two others for helping exchange the ransom payments from Bitcoin digital currency into rials. The 34-month long hacking scheme wreaked havoc on hospitals, schools, companies and government agencies, including the cities of Atlanta, Georgia, and Newark, New Jersey, causing over $30 million in losses to victims and allowing the alleged hackers to collect over $6 million in ransom payments. The deployment of the SamSam ransomware represented some of the highest profile cyber attacks on U.S. soil, including one in 2016 that forced Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital in Los Angeles to turn away patients and one last year that shut down Atlanta courts and much of its city government. |

Blast kills 23 outside China factory in Olympic city Posted: 28 Nov 2018 12:55 AM PST A truck carrying combustible chemicals exploded at the entrance of a chemical factory in a northern Chinese city that will host the 2022 Winter Olympics Wednesday, leaving 23 people dead and 22 others injured, state media and authorities said. The blast ignited other vehicles, leaving charred and smoking remains of trucks and cars scattered on a road as firefighters worked at the scene, according to images posted online by state media. A witness told AFP he heard a "very loud bang" after midnight and saw a field and trucks engulfed in flames outside the factory in Zhangjiakou, a city some 200 kilometres (124 miles) northwest of Beijing. |
California AG Considering Legal Challenge to Use of Force on Border Posted: 29 Nov 2018 05:27 AM PST California attorney general Xavier Becerra said Wednesday that his office is "monitoring" the use of force against a caravan of migrants and the possible closure of the southern border and considering filing a legal challenge. "We have been approached by folks who have expressed complaints," Becerra told Reuters in an interview. Becerra, a Democrat and former member of Congress, suggested that president Trump's threat to close the border in response to the influx of central American migrants arriving in caravans might provide a legal avenue to challenge the administration, provided the border closure affects a California resident. |
90-year-old woman dies in collision with electric scooter Posted: 28 Nov 2018 11:47 AM PST A 90-year-old Spanish woman has died after a collision with an electric scooter in what is believed to be the first accident of its kind in the world. Two men were sharing a scooter when they smashed into the woman, who hit her head on the ground and died of her injuries in hospital a few days later. The pair are facing trial for manslaughter. According to the police investigation cited by the Spanish newspaper El País, the two unnamed men were travelling at more than 30 kilometres per hour along a street shared by pedestrians and traffic in the Barcelona suburb of Esplugues de Llobregat. The accident, which was not reported at the time, occurred in August. Last month a 40-year-old woman was killed in Sabadell, near Barcelona, when she fell off the electric scooter she was using and was run over by a truck. The exponential growth of electric scooters in cities in Spain and elsewhere has promoted debate about their safety and where they should be allowed to circulate. Out-of-date laws meant for non-motorised scooters mean that in Madrid, for example, they can be ridden on the pavement, although the city council is drawing up plans to restrict their use. In Barcelona a taxi driver videoed a teenage couple riding on a scooter at 50 miles an hour, presumably after manipulating the device to raise its maximum speed. Spain's interior minister, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, said in October that traffic rules must be changed to protect "especially vulnerable" road users, noting that this year would be the first on record in which pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists' deaths would outnumber those of drivers. British law already bans E-scooters and several towns and cities in California have ordered the vehicles off the streets. Hire-scooter company Bird has filed a lawsuit against Beverley Hills, following one such ban in the well-heeled neighbourhood. |

Europe rebuffs Ukrainian calls for action in Russia standoff Posted: 29 Nov 2018 09:38 AM PST European leaders rebuffed calls from Ukraine for greater support against Russia on Thursday, after Kiev urged NATO to send ships into waters disputed with Moscow. German Chancellor Angela Merkel asked Kiev to be "sensible" following the request from President Petro Poroshenko, just hours after the European Union failed to agree to threaten new sanctions against Moscow. Kiev has called on Western allies to back expressions of support with concrete action after Russian forces on Sunday seized three Ukrainian ships off the coast of Crimea. |
