Nottingham Cottage: The Kensington home where Meghan and Harry live as a married couple Posted: 21 May 2018 11:30 AM PDT Following their royal wedding, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, now the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, will continue to live at Nottingham Cottage, a snug, two-bedroomed property in the grounds of Kensington Palace. The cottage was previously occupied by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who used it as their London base for around two-and-a-half years. How big is the cottage? Just a stone's throw from Kensington Palace, Prince Harry's childhood home, the cosy property, known by royal insiders as "Nott Cott," boasts two bedrooms, two reception rooms, a bathroom and a small garden. An aerial view of Kensington Palace, London Credit: Andrew Parsons/PA Wire King William III and Queen Mary II bought 'Nottingham House' from secretary of state Daniel Finch, the Earl of Nottingham, for £20,000 in 1689. It was subsequently remodelled into the palace by Christopher Wren, the architect who designed St Paul's Cathedral. The ceilings are said to be so low, the Duke of Cambridge had to "stoop" to avoid banging his head on them. An ideal starter home for newlyweds, the property also provides fantastic access to the trendy shops, boutiques and spas on Kensington High Street with which Ms Markle, 36, is already familiar. Ms Markle was familiar with the private, self-contained cottage before she moved in, having stayed with Prince Harry, 33, when she flew over from Toronto to visit him. Everything you need to know about visiting Kensington Palace Photographs of her former home in Toronto suggest that she favours a minimalistic, monochrome colour scheme with plenty of soft furnishings, coffee table books and floral arrangements. The American actress decorated it to "look like a California bungalow", and you can see how it looked while she lived in it on pictures she posted to Instagram. She wrote on her blog The Tig that the sunny decor helped her to stave off "seven Canadian winters." She has probably put her own mark on what had been, for four years, a bachelor pad. The Duchess of Cambridge is said to have redecorated it to her own taste when she first moved in. Royal wedding day pictures: Best photos from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's ceremony and reception Who else has lived there? Nottingham Cottage is one of the smallest properties within the grounds of Kensington Palace and was formerly the home of the Duke of Edinburgh's private secretary, Brigadier Sir Miles Hunt-Davis, and his wife Gay. Princess Diana's sister Lady Jane Fellowes and her husband Sir Robert Fellowes also lived there. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge lived there when in London, from July 2011, moving in permanently when they left Anglesey. Royal wedding | Read more It is where they took Prince George following his birth in July 2013 and spent their first few months as a family-of three before moving out that autumn to Apartment 1A, formerly the residence of Princess Margaret, in October that year. Prince Harry moved in shortly afterwards and has lived there ever since. The first thing he reportedly did when was install a hammock in the yard. When the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge married, they were given Anmer Hall, a 10-bedroom Grade II-listed mansion on the Sandringham estate by the Queen. It's likely a similar offer will be made to Prince Harry and Ms Markle. Meghan Markle's former home in Toronto Credit: AKGS It is not known whether he and Ms Markle employ their own staff. The Cambridges employed Italian housekeeper, Antonella Fresolone, who worked as a housemaid for the Queen for 13 years, to run their home when at Nottingham Cottage as well as in Anglesey. When Ms Markle moved to the UK, she brought her beloved beagle Guy with her. Bogart, a labrador-shepherd cross, was left behind with friends in Toronto after he was considered unfit to fly. |
Russia Is Reaping the Benefits of Israel's Actions in Syria Posted: 20 May 2018 04:39 PM PDT For Putin, the path to consolidating his Syrian achievements may lie in an agreement with Israel that further solidifies Russia's status. Russian president Vladimir Putin further cemented his position atop the Syrian power pyramid as a result of Israel's massive air campaign that targeted Iran's positions and Assad's air defenses. |

'Alien' asteroid discovered orbiting the wrong way near Jupiter Posted: 21 May 2018 11:30 AM PDT An "alien" asteroid from another star system has been discovered sharing Jupiter's orbit. Through a telescope the asteroid look like every other in the solar system save for one crucial difference - it is travelling in the wrong direction. It is the first time an interstellar space rock has been found to be permanently residing in the solar system. Earlier this year, a tumbling cigar-shaped object named 'Oumuamua', hit the headlines after flying into earth's galactic backyard, but it merely passed through and out again. But the new 1.8 mile wide rock - code-named 2015 BZ509 - appears to be a long-term resident, according to a study in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. The first clue that it was not a native of the solar system came from its "retrograde" orbit of the sun, the opposite the direction of travel taken by all the planets and almost every other object in our system. Scientists have concluded it survived by orbiting the sun exactly in step with Jupiter, but in the opposite direction Credit: NASA / ESA Dr Fathi Namouni, from the Cote d'Azur Observatory in France, lead author of the study, said: "How the asteroid came to move in this way while sharing Jupiter's orbit has until now been a mystery. "If 2015 BZ509 were a native of our system, it should have had the same original direction as all of the other planets and asteroids, inherited from the cloud of gas and dust that formed them." Scientists have concluded it survived by orbiting the sun exactly in step with Jupiter, but in the opposite direction. Co-author Dr Helena Morais, from the Estadual Paulista University in Brazil, said: "The close proximity of the stars, aided by the gravitational forces of the planets, help these systems attract, remove, and capture asteroids from one another." Computer simulations suggest that the asteroid made the jump to our solar system 4.5 billion years ago when the sun was part of a tightly packed star cluster. "That was completely unexpected...it means it is an alien to the solar system," said Dr Namouni. Since asteroids and comets carry organic chemicals and water, the discovery could shed light on the origins of life on Earth, the scientists believe. |

Venezuela's Maduro still standing after five turbulent years Posted: 20 May 2018 11:16 PM PDT One year ago few could see crisis-beset Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro re-elected for a second term -- and yet on Sunday he powered to another six-year mandate, giving him a stranglehold on the presidency until 2025. Maduro's nearest challenger, Henri Falcon, took just over 22 percent of the vote -- and said that he did not accept the final results. Maduro, a 55-year-old former bus driver and union leader, and ex-foreign minister, never doubted that he would be re-elected in a vote that he himself moved forward from December to May. |

First baby in 12 years for remote Brazilian island where births are banned Posted: 21 May 2018 06:44 AM PDT A remote Brazilian island welcomed its first baby in 12 years after a local woman broke the rule against giving birth there. The baby girl born on the Atlantic outpost of Fernando de Noronha on Saturday came as a surprise to everyone - including the parents. "The mother, who does not want to be identified, went into labor at home," the island's administration said in a statement carried by O Globo newspaper. "The family says it wasn't aware of the pregnancy." Tiny Fernando de Noronha - an archipelago famous for its wildlife preserve and with a population of just over 3,000 - doesn't authorize births because there's no maternity ward, O Globo reported. Expectant mothers are told to travel to the mainland, where the nearest big city is Natal, 227 miles (365 km) across the ocean. The unidentified mother in Saturday's birth has another child who was born on the mainland, but told O Globo that this time she "didn't feel anything" during her pregnancy. "On Friday night I had pains and when I went to the bathroom I saw something coming down between my legs. That's when the child's father came and picked it up. "It was a baby, a girl. I was dumbstruck." |

The fascinating thing Americans were Googling during the royal wedding Posted: 21 May 2018 02:59 AM PDT Nothing makes a wedding more magical than drilling down into some search engine data. Real fairy-tale stuff. SEE ALSO: Bishop Michael Curry brought passion and fire to the Royal Wedding Google trends released some stats pertaining to people's Google searches about the royal wedding and it's a snapshot into what people were really intersted in. Interestingly, the US was curious to know... what on earth is a fascinator?! The #RoyalWedding2018 guests did not disappoint with their outfit choices.Americans found the choice of head gear especially fascinating... pic.twitter.com/FpWH23w18X — GoogleTrends (@GoogleTrends) May 19, 2018 Just to clarify, a fascinator is a fancy doodad you wear on your head when you go somewhere posh. Sort of like a less functional hat. Technically the dress-code for the wedding stipulated that hats be worn rather than fascinators, but some people were just born to be rebels. Google trends also revealed that although Harry and Meghan have become the most searched royals since their engagement, the Google crown still belongs to William and Kate, who got married in 2011. Image: Google trendsThey did however overtake President Trump for one glorious moment. Image: Google trendsThe data Google revealed about UK users was a touch more typical. China's powerful new vice president to visit Russia, Belarus Posted: 21 May 2018 03:20 AM PDT China's powerful new vice president, Wang Qishan, will visit Russia and Belarus starting this week, China's foreign ministry said on Monday, his first overseas trip since being appointed in March. Wang, 69, a key ally of President Xi Jinping and China's one-time top graft buster, should have retired last year during a leadership reshuffle of the ruling Communist Party, but Xi has kept him on to add extra heft to Chinese diplomacy. |
