Sichuan Airlines co-pilot 'sucked halfway' out of cockpit, captain says Posted: 15 May 2018 01:20 AM PDT By Brenda Goh SHANGHAI (Reuters) - The co-pilot of a Sichuan Airlines flight that was forced to make an emergency landing on Monday was "sucked halfway" out of the plane after a cockpit windshield blew out, media reported, citing the aircraft's captain. Liu Chuanjian, hailed a hero on social media after having to land the Airbus A319 manually, told the Chengdu Economic Daily his aircraft had just reached a cruising altitude of 32,000 feet when a deafening sound tore through the cockpit. The cockpit experienced a sudden loss of pressure and drop in temperature and when he looked over, the cockpit's right windshield was gone. |

Navy Aircraft Carriers Might Just Be Unsinkable. Here's Why. Posted: 15 May 2018 08:10 AM PDT The bottom line on aircraft carrier survivability is that only a handful of countries can credibly pose a threat to America's most valuable warships, and short of using nuclear weapons none of those is likely to sink one. Although the Navy has changed it tactics to deal with the proliferation of fast anti-ship missiles and the growing military power of China in the Western Pacific, large-deck aircraft carriers remain among the most secure and useful combat systems in America's arsenal. With the unlimited range and flexibility afforded by nuclear propulsion, there are few places they can't go to enforce U.S. interests. And at the rate the Navy is investing in new warfighting technologies, that is likely to remain true for many decades to come. Large-deck, nuclear-powered aircraft carriers are the signature expression of American military power. No other combat system available to U.S. warfighters comes close to delivering so much offensive punch for months at a time without requiring land bases near the action. As a result, the ten carriers in the current fleet are in continuous demand from regional commanders -- so much so that extended overseas combat tours are becoming the norm. |
Thousands of North Carolina public school teachers march in Raleigh Posted: 16 May 2018 02:50 PM PDT Thousands of North Carolina teachers swarmed the state legislature on Wednesday to call for pay raises and more spending on schools, making the state the country's sixth to be roiled by educators demanding better funding. Hundreds of teachers in red T-shirts filled a spectators gallery and chanted "remember, remember, we vote in November" as the Republican-controlled General Assembly started its session. The protest prompted at least 38 districts, representing more than half the state's 1.5 million public school students, to cancel classes. |

Ecuador spied on Assange at London embassy: report Posted: 16 May 2018 02:13 AM PDT Ecuador spied on WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange at its London embassy where he has been living since 2012, initially to support him but things changed after he hacked the mission's computers, the Guardian reported Wednesday. The newspaper said Ecuador employed an international security company and undercover agents to monitor his visitors, embassy staff and even the British police at the embassy in London's luxury Knightsbridge area. The snooping was initially intended to protect Assange from the risk of being taken away by British police but later became a full-blown spying operation. |

Putin says Russian frigates in Mediterranean on standby over Syria threat Posted: 16 May 2018 06:06 AM PDT Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that Russian military vessels with Kalibr cruise missiles would be on permanent standby in the Mediterranean to counter what he said was the terrorist threat in Syria. The deployment shows how Russia has increased its military presence in the Middle East since it launched an intervention in Syria in 2015, turning the tide of the civil war in favor of its close ally, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Russia has in the past fired Kalibr cruise missiles from frigates and submarines stationed in the Mediterranean Sea at militant targets to support Syrian army offensives. |

Republican gubernatorial candidate drives 'deportation bus’ around Georgia Posted: 15 May 2018 10:14 AM PDT A Republican candidate for governor of Georgia is driving a "deportation bus" around the state, promising to fill it with undocumented immigrants and "send them back to where they came from". Michael Williams –a Georgia state senator and, according to his website, the first elected official in the state to endorse Donald Trump – announced this week that he would drive a bus around the state to raise awareness of the "overwhelming problem of illegal immigration". "Throughout his bus tour of sanctuary cities, Williams will expose how dangerous illegal aliens ruin local economies, cost American jobs, increase healthcare costs, and lower education standards," a statement on his Facebook page reads. |

Palestinians clash with Israeli forces on 70th anniversary of the Nakba (“catastrophe”) Posted: 15 May 2018 09:18 AM PDT Palestinians clashed with Israeli security forces in the occupied West Bank and at the Israeli-Gaza border in the Gaza Strip, during protests marking the anniversary of the Nakba, or "catastrophe," when more than 700,000 Palestinians fled or were expelled in the 1948 war surrounding Israel's creation. The protests were also a response to the United States' relocation of its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. (Getty Images) |

U.S. judge refuses to dismiss ex-Trump aide Manafort's criminal case Posted: 15 May 2018 03:39 PM PDT By Sarah N. Lynch WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A federal judge dealt President Donald Trump's former campaign manager Paul Manafort a major blow on Tuesday by refusing to dismiss criminal charges brought by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, after Manafort claimed that Mueller's probe has run amok and should be reined in. In a sharp rebuke of those claims, Judge Amy Berman Jackson of U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia ruled that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein had followed all the Justice Department's rules when he hired Mueller and Mueller's case against Manafort is not overly broad or improper. |
Posted: 16 May 2018 07:20 AM PDT Perhaps there really was a time, long ago, when if one wanted to be informed of the activities of the royal family, one consulted the court circular. Now, of course, you go on US celebrity gossip website TMZ. And there in glaring headlines you find a story, not of family joy at a forthcoming wedding, but of pain and suffering – much of it heaped on Meghan Markle's 73-year-old father Thomas. You could, as one newspaper has, call it "a rollercoaster of speculation surrounding whether Mr Markle would attend Saturday's royal wedding at Windsor Castle in Berkshire". |
Aston Martin unveils 630 bhp DB11 AMR Posted: 15 May 2018 06:37 AM PDT There's really no such thing as an "ordinary" Aston Martin, but for those who want something a little more special than the current spectacular lineup of dream cars from the legendary British manufacturer there's now the DB11 AMR, which is the first model from the new performance arm of Aston Martin. The Aston Martin DB11 AMR is the new flagship in the company's GT range, and it replaces the standard V12 in the automaker's portfolio. By combining that extra power with improved shift calibration of the eight-speed automatic gearbox, the AMR has knocked 0.2 seconds off the DB11's 0 to 60 mph time, so it now takes just 3.7 seconds to get to 60 mph from a standing start. |

Sanctions to intervention: US options after 'sham' Venezuela vote Posted: 15 May 2018 06:44 PM PDT The United States, which in March 2015 labelled Venezuela "a national security threat," has already imposed sanctions on dozens of officials and companies from the Socialist government in Caracas. Maduro and several other senior government officials have been targeted and accused of corruption or complicity in drug trafficking. President Donald Trump has also banned US entities from buying bonds from the Venezuelan state or from its oil company, PDVSA, and has forbidden any trading in the petro, the new crypto-currency that Venezuela launched to the public in March. |
U.S. imposes sanctions on Iran central bank governor Posted: 15 May 2018 02:37 PM PDT By Lesley Wroughton WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States on Tuesday imposed sanctions on Iran's central bank governor and an Iraq-based bank for "moving millions of dollars" for Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard, as Washington seeks to cut off funding it says Tehran is using to fund militant activities overseas. U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin accused bank chief Valiollah Seif of covertly funneling money on behalf of the revolutionary guard's external arm, Quds Force (IRGC-QF), through Al-Bilad Islamic Bank "to enrich and support the violent and radical agenda of Hezbollah." The move cuts off Iran's use of a critical banking network, he said. |
