Walter Huang died in a crash and vehicle fire in a Tesla Inc Model X near Mountain View, California, last month, prompting investigations by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). |

Israel targets Hamas posts in Gaza after border blast Posted: 11 Apr 2018 03:06 AM PDT The Israeli army said it fired at unspecified Hamas "military targets" in Gaza on Wednesday after a Palestinian bomb attack on an army engineering unit working inside the Hamas-ruled territory. It was not clear what the engineering unit was working on, though Israel routinely carries out maintenance work on or near the border fence in an area it considers a buffer zone. "During routine activity in northern Gaza, an explosive device that was placed under the guise of the riots was detonated against an (army) engineering vehicle on the western side of the security fence," a military statement said. |

Braced for air strikes on Syria, some airlines re-route flights Posted: 11 Apr 2018 07:56 AM PDT By Jamie Freed SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Some major airlines were re-routing flights on Wednesday after Europe's air traffic control agency warned aircraft flying in the eastern Mediterranean to exercise caution due to possible air strikes into Syria. Eurocontrol said in a notification published on Tuesday afternoon that air-to-ground and cruise missiles could be used over the following 72 hours and there was a possibility of intermittent disruption to radio navigation equipment. U.S. President Donald Trump and Western allies are discussing possible military action to punish Syria's President Bashar Assad for a suspected poison gas attack on Saturday on a rebel-held town that had long held out against government forces. |

Parkland, Florida, chemistry teacher Sean Simpson left his loaded Glock 9mm handgun at a Deerfield Beach Pier bathroom, according to the Broward County Sheriff's report. Mr Simpson had volunteered to arm himself while in the classroom in the wake of the 14 February mass shooting that killed 17 people at his school. |
Climate change runs AMOC with Atlantic currents: studies Posted: 11 Apr 2018 10:00 AM PDT A system of Atlantic Ocean currents that regulates global weather is at its feeblest in 1,600 years, weakened partly by climate change, said researchers Wednesday, warning of trouble ahead. Two studies in the journal Nature concluded the system, dubbed the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), is in decline -- validating a long-held scientific suspicion. The weakening, agreed the teams, was the result of melting sea ice, glaciers, and ice-shelves gushing freshwater -- less dense than salty ocean water -- into the North Atlantic. |

Can Russia Really Shoot Down U.S. Missiles in Syria? Posted: 11 Apr 2018 08:24 AM PDT The Trump administration appears to have officially come to a conclusion on whether to respond to an alleged chemical weapons attack in Syria, with the US president suggesting Wednesday that a missile strike is eminent. "Russia vows to shoot down any and all missiles fired at Syria," Trump wrote on Twitter. Russia's foreign ministry responded to the warning by accusing the US of attempting to destroy evidence of the reported chemical weapons attack, which Russia and the Syrian government have denied ever occurred. |

Speaking at a ceremony at Jerusalem's Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial, the Israeli premier spoke of the murderous Nazi aggression that was not sufficiently challenged by Western powers. "Today, too, there's an extremist regime that's threatening us, threatening the peace of the entire world," Netanyahu said of Iran. |

Saudi Arabia intercepts missile over Riyadh: Al Arabiya Posted: 11 Apr 2018 08:05 AM PDT Saudi Arabia's air defence forces intercepted a ballistic missile over Riyadh on Wednesday, state media said, after at least three blasts were heard and three clouds of smoke were seen in the sky above the capital. Yemen's Houthis has stepped up missile attacks on the kingdom in what it says is retaliation for air raids by a Saudi-led coalition fighting the Iran-aligned armed movement. One man was killed in Riyadh last month by debris after the military shot down a flurry of missiles, the first casualty of the Yemen war in the Saudi capital. |
Pope acknowledges his 'grave mistakes' in Chile sex abuse crisis Posted: 11 Apr 2018 03:27 PM PDT By Fabian Cambero and Philip Pullella SANTIAGO/VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Francis acknowledged on Wednesday that he had made "grave mistakes" in the handling of a sexual abuse crisis in Chile, saying he felt shame and inviting victims he had once doubted to Rome to seek their forgiveness personally. "I have made grave mistakes in the assessment and my perception of the situation, due in particular to a lack of truthful and balanced information," he wrote in an extraordinary letter to Chilean bishops. The letter followed a visit to Chile by one of the Vatican's most experienced sexual abuse investigators, Archbishop Charles Scicluna of Malta. |

American Warplanes Are Falling From the Sky Posted: 12 Apr 2018 04:23 AM PDT Two of the crashes involved U.S. Navy and Marine Corps aircraft, underscoring concerns that the naval aviation fleet is overworked, undertrained and poorly-maintained. The spate of crashes began on March 14, when a Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet fighter plunged into the sea near Naval Air Station Key West in Florida. On March 15, an Air Force HH-60 Pave Hawk rescue helicopter struck the ground in western Iraq, killing all seven airmen aboard. |

Posted: 12 Apr 2018 04:23 PM PDT Theresa May's cabinet has agreed on the need to "take action" to deter use of chemical weapons following an emergency meeting at Downing Street. President Donald Trump had warned Russia of imminent military action in Syria, declaring missiles "will be coming" and denouncing Moscow for standing by Syria's president, but on Thursday night the White House said that "no final decision" had been made about what Washington will do. Mr Trump, Ms May and French President Emmanuel Macron have been in regular contact as they plot a course of action, with Mr Macron saying France has "proof" the Syrian government carried out the chemical attack which killed potentially doxens. |

Syria's regime is poised to secure the opposition's onetime bastion on the edge of Damascus, after a negotiated withdrawal for its last holdout of Douma. "Jaish al-Islam fighters handed over their heavy weapons to Russian military police in the town of Douma on Wednesday," said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. |

U.S. seeks to deport thousands of Vietnamese protected by treaty: former ambassador Posted: 12 Apr 2018 02:03 AM PDT The United States is seeking to send thousands of immigrants from Vietnam back to the communist-ruled country despite a bilateral agreement that should protect most from deportation, according to Washington's former ambassador to Hanoi. A "small number" of people protected by the agreement have already been sent back, the former ambassador, Ted Osius, told Reuters in an interview. Osius said that many of the targeted immigrants were supporters of the now defunct U.S.-backed state of South Vietnam, and Hanoi would see them as destabilizing elements. |
