The retaking of Eastern Ghouta would mark a major milestone in President Bashar al-Assad's efforts to regain control of territory seized by rebel factions during Syria's seven-year civil war.

A Lopez Obrador victory could usher in a Mexican government less accommodating toward the United States, where President Donald Trump has stoked trade tensions with Mexico and aggressively moved to curb immigration.

British and American soldiers killed in Syria were on mission to capture Isil member, Pentagon says

Posted: 02 Apr 2018 12:41 PM PDT

British and American soldiers killed in Syria were on mission to capture Isil member, Pentagon saysA British and an American soldier killed in Syria last week were on a secret mission to kill or capture a member of the Islamic State of Iraq in the Levant (Isil), the Pentagon has confirmed. Master Sgt. Jonathan Dunbar, from Austin, Texas, and Sgt. Matt Tonroe, a SAS sniper from Manchester, died in an improvised explosive devise blast in Manbij, Syria. The pair was killed and five other troops wounded on March 30. Few details have been released about the circumstances, but Major Adrian Rankine-Galloway, a Pentagon spokesman, said on Monday that they died in the top secret mission. The US military has not said whether the IED was in a building, a vehicle or buried in the road. The troops were out of their vehicles at the time of the explosion, according to a US official. There is also no word on whether the target was found and captured or killed. One indicator of the sensitivity of the mission was that Dunbar was identified publicly by the Army only as being "assigned to Headquarters, U.S. Army Special Operations Command, Fort Bragg, N.C." That specific language has been used in the past when troops killed in action have actually been part of the Army's elite Delta Force, a counterterrorism unit that is not publicly identified. CNN reported that Dunbar was assigned to Delta. Delta Force and the Naval Special Warfare Development Group - popularly known as Seal Team Six - are among the so-called Tier One units that specialise in high-risk counterterrorism and hostage rescue missions that are rarely acknowledged. Special operations forces have been in the Manbij area recently looking for high-value Isil operatives that may have fled to the area, the US official said. There are currently around 2,000 US troops in Syria, who mostly work with local allies fighting Isil. On Thursday President Donald Trump said that the US would "be coming out of Syria, like, very soon". It later emerged that he had suspended the funds for a $200 million stabilisation project in the country. His remarks caught military leaders off guard, and were strongly criticised by Lindsey Graham, Republican senator for South Carolina. Mr Graham warned that pulling out of Syria now, with Isil on the run, would be "the single worst decision" that the president could make.

Chinese space station Tiangong-1 set to crash land on Monday

Chinese space station Tiangong-1 set to crash land on MondayCall it Apocalypse not quite Now. The Chinese space station hurtling uncontrollably towards Earth is estimated to smash into the planet a day later than expected.  Tiangong-1, known as "Heavenly Palace", was due to have entered the Earth's atmosphere by Sunday afternoon but now may not arrive until Monday morning.  The delay, which offers Easter celebrators a temporary reprieve, was announced by the European Space Agency [ESA}, which is monitoring the station's movements.  Yet the timings remain "highly variable" and it is unclear where and in what state the abandoned craft will eventually hit.  The space station, placed into orbit in 2011, was due for a controlled re-entry but stopped working in March 2016. Without its engines it is unable to change course.  How China lost control of it's space station It is said to be orbiting the Earth 16 times a day and tumbling over every three minutes in a downward spiral towards our planet.  Yet experts said the chance of injury from the craft to those on the ground is minimal, given it is likely to break up during re-entry.  Nearly 6,000 uncontrolled re-entries of large objects have occurred over the past 60 years without harming anyone, according to the ESA.  The Chinese space station Tiangong-1 or 'Heavenly Palace' Credit: Quirky China News/REX/Shutterstock The China Manned Space Engineering Office moved to play down concerns on its WeChat social media account, saying there is "no need for people to worry".  A spokesman said that such falling spacecraft do "not crash into the Earth fiercely like in sci-fi movies, but turn into a splendid (meteor shower) and move across the beautiful starry sky as they race towards the Earth".  Lu Kang, a spokesman for China's foreign ministry, said the country would step up efforts to coordinate with the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs as the craft approaches.  During re-entry, atmospheric drag will rip away solar arrays, antennas and other external components at an altitude of around 100 kilometres (60 miles), according to the Chinese space office. A photo of the giant screen at the Jiuquan space center shows the Shenzhou-9 spacecraft approching Tiangong-1 module for the automatic docking on July 18, 2012 Credit: STR/AFP/GettyImages The intensifying heat and friction will cause the main structure to burn or blow up, and it should disintegrate at an altitude of around 80 kilometres, it said. Most fragments will dissipate in the air and a small amount of debris will fall relatively slowly before landing across hundreds of square kilometres, most likely in the ocean.  One expert said the craft would break up into a "series of fireballs", adding it would be a "spectacular show".

Anti-apartheid campaigner Winnie Mandela dies aged 81

Posted: 02 Apr 2018 09:28 AM PDT

Anti-apartheid campaigner Winnie Mandela dies aged 81Archbishop Desmond Tutu said he and generations of activists were "deeply" inspired by Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, who died in a Johannesburg hospital on Monday, despite controversies that dogged the anti-apartheid struggle veteran until her death. "She refused to be bowed by the imprisonment of her husband, the perpetual harassment of her family by security forces, detentions, bannings and banishment," Mr Tutu said in a statement on Monday. "May she rest in peace and rise in glory." Ms Mandela, who was often called "the mother of the nation," had been in and out of the hospital since the beginning of the year, according to a statement released by her family on Monday, and died early Monday afternoon surrounded by family and loved ones. "Mrs Madikizela-Mandela was one of the greatest icons of the struggle against Apartheid," the statement said. "She fought valiantly against the Apartheid state and sacrificed her life for the freedom of the country." Ms Mandela was married to African National Congress leader and South Africa's first president Nelson Mandela for nearly four decades, though most of their marriage was spent apart after Mr Mandela was imprisoned on Robben Island. Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, ex-wife of former South African President Nelson Mandela As an anti-apartheid struggle activist, Ms Mandela fought hard for her husband's release, and images of the couple holding hands as Mr Mandela walked out of prison in 1990 helped usher in the arrival of the democratic era in South Africa.   During her husband's imprisonment, however, Ms Mandela's fight in the liberation struggle became mired in controversy. In 1986, she was widely linked to "necklacing", when suspected traitors were burnt alive by a petrol-soaked car tyre being put over their head and set alight, after she endorsed the practice in a speech.  In 1991, Ms Mandela was convicted of kidnapping and assault, after her bodyguards murdered a 14-year-old boy who had been accused of being an informer. Stompie Seipei, was found near her Soweto home with his throat cut. Her six-year jail term was reduced on appeal to a fine. Ms Mandela's six-year jail sentence was reduced to a fine and she later denied any involvement when she appeared at the Truth and Reconciliation hearings. She subsequently served briefly as a deputy minister in his administration, but was sacked after allegations of corruption emerged.   Despite these difficulties, many South Africans continued to support Ms Mandela in her later years. "The struggle could never have been what it became without the undying zeal and passion of Mam' Winnie both for the country and our people," the ANC Women's League said in a statement on Monday. "As a woman she kept the family and the hopes of all black people alive." Mandela was an icon of the anti-apartheid movement Credit: Getty Political party leaders, government ministers and neighbors gathered outside her home in Soweto on Monday evening upon hearing the news of her death. "She's been a mother of the nation," Ms. Mandela's neighbor Duduzile Mhkize told a local news channel. "She's done great things for the country. She's done great things for the world." Though she had criticized the African National Congress party in recent years, Ms Mandela remained loyal to the beleaguered party she supported weeks before her death. After being discharged from a Johannesburg hospital in January, she appeared with President Cyril Ramaphosa at a polling station in Soweto in March. "I'm always with my president. We are going to surprise the country," Ms Mandela told the media. "I'm back."
