Gunman torches Philippine casino, killing dozens in panic Posted: 02 Jun 2017 08:05 AM PDT By Manolo Serapio Jr and Neil Jerome Morales MANILA (Reuters) - A gunman stormed a casino in the Philippine capital on Friday, setting gaming tables alight and killing at least 36 people who mostly suffocated in thick smoke, in an attack claimed by Islamic State but which officials insist was a botched robbery. The gunman killed himself in a hotel room after being shot and wounded by security officers at the Resorts World Manila entertainment complex, police said. "Islamic State fighters carried out the Manila attack in the Philippines," the militant group's Amaq news agency said. |

'Tragic' measles vaccine blunders kill 15 children in South Sudan Posted: 02 Jun 2017 08:46 AM PDT Fifteen children died in South Sudan after receiving contaminated measles vaccines that had not been properly refrigerated, and were mixed using the same syringe for four days. In addition to the blunders handling the vaccine, Health Minister Riek Gai Kok said that two children, aged 12 and 13, had been recruited to administer it. An investigation showed that local officials failed to follow immunisation guidelines during a four-day campaign to vaccinate around 300 people in the southeastern state of Kapoeta in May, Kok said. |

British Airways I.T. outage caused by contractor who switched off power: Times Posted: 01 Jun 2017 11:33 PM PDT A contractor doing maintenance work at a British Airways data center inadvertently switched off the power supply, knocking out the airline's computer systems and leaving 75,000 people stranded last weekend, the Times newspaper reported on Friday. Quoting a BA source, the newspaper said the power supply unit that sparked the I.T. failure was working perfectly but was accidentally shut down by a worker. An investigation into the power outage is likely to focus on human error rather than any equipment failure, it said. |
Tense Kabul under lockdown after deadly protest clashes Posted: 03 Jun 2017 03:49 AM PDT Kabul city was on lockdown Saturday with armed checkpoints and armoured vehicles patrolling the streets to prevent a repeat of protests that spiralled into street clashes, leaving at least four people dead. Hundreds of demonstrators calling for President Ashraf Ghani to step down clashed with police on Friday, prompting officials to beat them back with live rounds in the air, tear gas and water cannon. The protesters were voicing anger over a truck bombing on Wednesday in Kabul's diplomatic quarter that killed 90 people and wounded hundreds, the deadliest attack in the city since 2001. |

Today's Google Doodle celebrates the man behind the Pride rainbow flag Posted: 02 Jun 2017 07:34 AM PDT June is LGBTQ Pride Month and social networks and sites of all kinds are releasing special emojis and graphics in celebration. On Friday, Google used its latest Doodle to honor American artist and LGBTQ rights activist Gilbert Baker, creator of the rainbow flag that has become a symbol of pride for LGBTQ individuals worldwide. Baker, who died last year at 65, would have turned 66 today. Image: GoogleAccording to TIME, Baker left the military after traveling from Kansas to San Francisco with the U.S. Army. After leaving the military, he taught himself to sew and would often volunteer to make protest banners for the city's LGBTQ community. SEE ALSO: Instagram releases fierce rainbow stickers to celebrate LGBTQ Pride Month In 1978, gay leader Harvey Milk asked Baker to create an icon that would symbolize both activists and the community alike. At the time, the only symbol of the LGBTQ community was the pink triangle, which was the way gay prisoners were identified in Nazi concentration camps. Baker wanted to create something more celebratory and positive to represent the growing LGBTQ movement. The first flag, which included eight different colored stripes each with their own meaning, was put together by volunteers in the attic of the Gay Community Center, reports TIME. After Milk's assassination, the number of stripes was reduced to six due to the limited availability of fabric in the wake of the flag's new popularity. Happy Pride, everyone! Residents of historic Israeli settlement say they have returned home Posted: 02 Jun 2017 07:35 PM PDT For Yohanan Ben Yaakov, taking part in the creation of the first Israeli settlement in the occupied West Bank in 1967 was like returning home, he says. Today, Israel's 50-year occupation of Palestinian territory and its continuing settlement building are seen as major stumbling blocks to any peace efforts. |

Colossal crack in Antartica ice shelf about to drop state-sized iceberg into the ocean Posted: 02 Jun 2017 02:13 PM PDT With President Donald Trump announcing that the United States won't be joining a huge number of its allies in supporting the Paris Agreement on climate change rules just a day ago, an extremely troubling development in Antarctica is helping to underscore just how bad of a decision that really was. A crack in the Larsen C ice shelf on the frigid continent has grown rapidly in the past week, and a complete break is expected imminently. When that happens, a chunk of ice as large as the state of Delaware will be released into the ocean, creating one of the world's largest icebergs ever.
The crack, which is currently roughly 120 miles long, has grown by several miles in just the past week, and is now just eight miles from being complete. Researchers are pointing to the accelerated break — called "calving" — as a further sign that human-caused climate change is currently at a tipping point from which we may not be able to recover. The shelf's calving, as troubling as it is on its own, is (unfortunately) just part of a bigger picture. Scientists believe that, once the shelf does make its way freely into the ocean, the event could further destabilize the rest of the glacier, leading to increased break-ups in the immediate future. "When it calves, the Larsen C Ice Shelf will lose more than 10% of its area to leave the ice front at its most retreated position ever recorded," Professor Adrian Luckman of Swansea University College of Science said of the calving. "This event will fundamentally change the landscape of the Antarctic Peninsula." |

Varadkar becomes Irish PM-in-waiting in social, generational shift Posted: 02 Jun 2017 11:01 AM PDT By Padraic Halpin and Conor Humphries DUBLIN (Reuters) - Ireland's governing Fine Gael party elected Leo Varadkar as its new leader on Friday, choosing the gay, 38-year-old son of an Indian immigrant to succeed Enda Kenny as prime minister in a striking sign of the country's rapid social change. Bar an unexpected development, Varadkar will be voted in as prime minister when parliament next sits on June 13 and become the once-staunchly Catholic country's first openly gay premier and the youngest person ever to hold the office. "If my election today shows anything, it is that prejudice has no hold in this Republic," Varadkar said to huge applause in a speech at Dublin's Mansion House, where Ireland's parliament first sat almost a century ago. |

Mexico ruling party risks nasty upset in governor's race Posted: 02 Jun 2017 12:50 PM PDT Mexico's ruling party risks losing the governorship of the country's largest state Sunday in elections that observers say are fueling a fiery left-wing populist's prospects of becoming president next year. Losing the bellwether election in the state of Mexico -- President Enrique Pena Nieto's home state -- would spell disaster for the once-mighty Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, as its own candidate has admitted. Political analysts say the tight race has given a huge boost to Morena's founder, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, a sharp critic of US President Donald Trump who wants to be Mexico's first leftist president in recent memory. |

Venezuela court threatens opponent Capriles with arrest Posted: 01 Jun 2017 07:58 PM PDT Venezuela's Supreme Court threatened Thursday to jail senior opposition leader Henrique Capriles if he lets anti-government protesters block roads in the state he governs. In its latest swipe at embattled President Nicolas Maduro's opponents, the high court ordered Capriles to take "all actions" possible to stop protesters from shutting down roads in the northern state of Miranda. It warned Capriles, who narrowly lost the 2013 presidential election to Maduro, would face six to 15 months of prison if he failed to comply. |

Why the Rolls-Royce Sweptail is the shape of things to come Posted: 02 Jun 2017 05:57 AM PDT With the unveiling of the Sweptail, Rolls-Royce has redefined the automotive notion of bespoke and has thrown down the gauntlet to every carmaker that claims to offer super luxury vehicles. "We don't think it's right to profess to do it [bespoke services] unless you're prepared to go through the journey to really make that happen," explains James Warren. As Rolls-Royce's head of communications for Western Europe, Warren has had an extremely busy week. |
EU regulators say Qualcomm has not offered concessions in NXP bid Posted: 02 Jun 2017 02:44 AM PDT U.S. smartphone chipmaker Qualcomm has not offered any concessions so far in its $38-billion bid for NXP Semiconductors , EU antitrust regulators said on Friday, increasing the risk of a lengthy investigation into the deal. Qualcomm, which supplies chips to Android smartphone makers and Apple , had until June 1 to propose concessions to allay possible competition concerns over the biggest-ever deal in the semiconductor industry. During an investigation, Qualcomm could seek to convince regulators that the deal was not anti-competitive. |
