Philippine military says close to defeating Islamist rebels Posted: 29 May 2017 05:53 AM PDT By Tom Allard MARAWI, Philippines (Reuters) - The Philippine military said on Monday it was close to retaking a southern city held for a seventh day by Islamist militants, as helicopters unleashed more rockets on positions held by the rebels aligned with Islamic State. The occupation of Marawi city by the Maute, a group hardly heard of a year ago, has become the biggest security challenge of Rodrigo Duterte's 11-month presidency, with gunmen resisting air and ground assaults and controlling central parts of a city of 200,000 people. The military said the rebels may be getting help from "sympathetic elements" and fighters they had freed from jail during the rampage that started on Tuesday and caught the military by surprise. |

After the bomb fell, she contacted another military unit in the city of Fukuyama east of Hiroshima, local media including public broadcaster NHK reported. |
The Pope did not appear that thrilled to meet Justin Trudeau Posted: 29 May 2017 01:50 PM PDT Pope Francis is not here for your Instagram likes. The Pope was recently photographed with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who was just born for the camera. But instead of smiling, the Pope decided he would put on his best "I'd rather be reading encyclicals" face. SEE ALSO: Pope Francis met President Trump and looked insanely psyched about it We all thought the Pope was just really sad about meeting President Trump. But not even Trudeau and his wife, Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau, could win the angsty Pope's heart. It's not them, it's him. Image: vatican pool/Getty ImagesIt's entirely possible that Francis just doesn't like to smile for these shots. Or he doesn't like world leaders. Call him the "INFJ" Pope. The internet couldn't help but notice his reticence. @CdnPress The Pope is still getting over his meeting with Trump, apparently. — DanJustDan (@ShotoDan2016) May 29, 2017 It turns out that it's called "resting Pope's face." Posted: 29 May 2017 01:50 AM PDT Germany should reconsider sharing intelligence with the United States, because Donald Trump and his administration "chatter too much" and could give critical information to Russia, a German MP has warned. Thomas Opperman, the leader of the Social Democrats (SDP), described Mr Trump's handling of classified information a "security risk for the West". It comes after Angela Merkel suggested Germany and Europe can no longer rely on the US under Mr Trump. |

Citing a May 12 report by Reuters, Chuck Grassley, a Republican senator from Iowa, requested a review of claims made by Chinese migration agency Qiaowai and the U.S. Immigration Fund (USIF) in the marketing of the One Journal Square project in Jersey City, New Jersey to potential investors in China. Grassley flagged his concerns to the Department of Homeland Security and the Securities and Exchange Commission in a May 24 letter that was later posted on his website. |

Worker demands brake Peugeot's Opel takeover Posted: 30 May 2017 04:39 AM PDT German carmaker Opel on Tuesday pushed back the first step in its takeover by France's Peugeot, after workers raised hurdles over the future of a prized research centre. Workers have blocked the firm's legal reorganisation, a vital first step in the merger process, local newspaper the Allgemeine Zeitung reported citing sources inside the firm. A source close to the employee representatives told AFP that there were still questions to be negotiated between workers and managers at Opel and American parent company General Motors, while adding that the talks were not confrontational. |

Deaths from Alzheimer's Increase 50 Percent Posted: 30 May 2017 07:34 AM PDT Deaths from Alzheimer's disease are on the rise in the United States, according to a new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Researchers at the CDC found that, in recent years, the rate of death from Alzheimer's disease increased by more than 50 percent, from about 16 deaths per 100,000 people in 1999 to 25 deaths per 100,000 people in 2014. The increasing number of deaths from Alzheimer's is partly due to the growing number of older adults in the United States, as Alzheimer's disease most commonly affects adults ages 65 years and older, the CDC researchers said. |

Trudeau seeks papal apology over Canada school abuse Posted: 29 May 2017 10:39 AM PDT Pope Francis on Monday met Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who sought an apology over the abuse of indigenous Canadians at church-run boarding schools. A Canadian truth and reconciliation commission wanted an apology from the Roman Catholic Church in its extensive list of recommendations in a 2015 report. The report into a "cultural genocide" of more than a century of abuse collated evidence over six years from some 7,000 former students in Canada. |
Posted: 30 May 2017 06:40 AM PDT Donald Trump is likely to reverse the Obama administration's policy on better relations with Cuba - the latest overturning of his predecessor's work, according to The Daily Caller. After a late 2014 breakthrough with President Raul Castro, Barack Obama was able to reestablish diplomatic relations with the communist Caribbean island nation the next year after nearly 60 years of hostility. Travel restrictions were lifted and opportunities to do business also opened up - much of it done through executive orders signed by Mr Obama that avoided the need Congressional approval. |

Chevron, ExxonMobil, Lukoil and KazMunayGas are partners in the venture, which said the event was caused by an unplanned power loss and there were no injuries, spills or equipment damage. UK election rivals May and Corbyn set out opposing EU 'no deal' stances Posted: 29 May 2017 04:26 PM PDT By Costas Pitas and William James LONDON (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Theresa May said she would walk away from divorce talks with the European Union without a deal if she had to, but her rival in next week's election, Labour's Jeremy Corbyn, said he would make sure an agreement was reached if he won power. Britons will go to the polls in a vote that will decide whether May, from the centre-right Conservatives, or Corbyn of the leftist Labour Party, gets to sit down with Brussels and hammer out an exit deal that will define the country's trade and diplomatic ties with the EU. |

The summit of G7 wealthy nations pitted Trump against the leaders of Germany, France, Britain, Italy, Canada and Japan on several issues, with European diplomats frustrated at having to revisit questions they had hoped were long settled. "We are satisfied by how things went," said Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni, while acknowledging splits with Washington in some areas. |

S. Africa's Zuma survives renewed calls to resign Posted: 29 May 2017 08:51 AM PDT South African President Jacob Zuma survived fresh calls within the ruling ANC party for him to resign, party officials said Monday, as they acknowledged support was "drifting away" from the movement. Senior figures in the African National Congress met over the weekend after Zuma endured months of criticism over his sacking of respected finance minister Pravin Gordhan. "There was a call made in the national executive committee for the president to consider stepping down," said ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe. |
