Venezuela attorney general says officials threatened her family Posted: 13 Jun 2017 01:58 AM PDT Venezuela's attorney general on Monday said intelligence officials had threatened and harassed her family after she openly challenged President Nicolas Maduro over the country's political crisis. A staunch figure of the ruling party, Attorney General Luisa Ortega has been branded a traitor for becoming the highest public official to break ranks with Maduro. Ortega said members of her family had received threatening telephone calls and had been harassed and pursued. |

Fisker’s Tesla competitor has 400 mile range and charges in just 9 minutes Posted: 12 Jun 2017 01:37 PM PDT Henrik Fisker is a bit of a legend in the automotive design world, so when he announced that he was working on an all-new electric vehicle that would both challenge Tesla's Model S, and serve as the spiritual successor to the Fisker Karma, there was plenty of interest. Fisker first teased the new car in late 2016, but now we have our first real look at the vehicle and it sure is fancy. https://twitter.com/FiskerOfficial/status/873584846324379648 The car, called the Fisker EMotion, will be the first vehicle under the newly formed Fisker Inc. — Fisker sold his Fisker Automotive brand in early 2014, and it was subsequently renamed Karma Automotive — and is one of two planned electric cars from the company, with the second unnamed vehicle being designed for mass market appeal rather than the luxury sector like the EMotion. The EMotion is definitely a sleek, beautiful car, but what should really get electric car buffs excited is the technology that is packed into it. Fisker says the vehicle is designed with a 400-mile range in mind — beating the sub-350-mile range of the Tesla Model S handily — as well as a fast-charging feature that will allow it to juice up in just nine minutes. That's incredibly fast, but Fisker says the car relies on patent-pending battery technology designed by researchers at UCLA, and abandons the typical lithium-ion battery trend in favor of supercapacitors using graphene. The car has a top speed of 161 miles per hour, and will be capable of driving autonomously, though its self-driving capabilities may not be activated until after its retail launch. Pricing and other minor details are still unclear. |

Pope gives rebel Nigeria priests ultimatum over bishop Posted: 12 Jun 2017 06:41 AM PDT Pope Francis has given church officials in southern Nigeria a 30-day ultimatum to obey him by accepting the nomination of a bishop -- or face being suspended from office. During talks with a Catholic delegation from Nigeria, the pope demanded that priests and church members in the southern diocese of Ahiara write to him personally to "ask his forgiveness", the Holy See said in a statement at the weekend. "Whoever does not do this will be ipso facto suspended a divinis and will lose his current office," it warned. |
Bill Cosby sexual assault trial: Defence for star produces single witness before resting Posted: 12 Jun 2017 07:38 AM PDT The defence presented by Bill Cosby's legal team in the comedian's long-awaited sexual assault trial lasted all of six minutes, and produced a single witness. In a sprawling statement to a Pennsylvania courtroom, lawyer Brian McMonagle presented the case for the innocence of Cosby by painting his client as honest, his accuser as inconsistent, and the media as complicit. "This is not a civil case about money, money, money," Mr McMonagle told the jury. |
Germany's Aldi unveils major US expansion Posted: 12 Jun 2017 08:14 AM PDT German discount grocery store giant Aldi unveiled a major US expansion plan on Monday, aiming to make it the third-largest US grocery chain in five years. "We're growing at a time when other retailers are struggling," Aldi CEO Jason Hart said in a statement. By expanding to 2,500 stores by 2022, from the current 1,600, the Aldi would become the third largest US grocery store chain by store count, more than doubling its monthly customer base to 100 million. |

For Trump, new week brings series of especially steep tests Posted: 12 Jun 2017 11:54 AM PDT This could be another big week for President Trump. US oil output hampering market rebalancing: OPEC Posted: 13 Jun 2017 03:54 AM PDT Increased oil production in the United States is hampering efforts to balance out market supply and demand, OPEC said on Tuesday. While a "rebalancing of the market" was "underway," it was "at a slower pace than originally anticipated," the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries wrote in its latest monthly oil market report. Back in November, OPEC members agreed to cut production by 1.2 million barrels per day for six months beginning from the start of the year in a bid to reduce the glut of oil supplies on the shore up prices. |

The Bernie Sanders-wing scares Democrats. But they'll lose without it | Ross Barkan Posted: 12 Jun 2017 09:15 AM PDT The newest idea circulating among the very smart people who report and commentate on American politics is that the Democratic party, so enfeebled in the age of Donald Trump, might be in danger of veering too far left. While Bernie Sanders tries to foment his revolution across the country, many Democratic elected officials and operatives are wary that candidates too steeped in socialism will blow it in the more moderate and conservative-seeming precincts of the country. For most Democrats aligned with the establishment, the dream is Jon Ossoff. |
Iran urges Gulf peace mechanism, says Saudi backing militants Posted: 13 Jun 2017 07:06 AM PDT Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Tuesday called for a permanent mechanism in the Gulf to resolve crises like the blockade against Qatar by Saudi Arabia and its allies. Speaking at a news conference on the sidelines of an annual peace mediation in Oslo, Zarif also said Saudi Arabia supported militants inside Iran. "It is absolutely imperative for our region not to only to resolve this particular conflict or dispute between our southern neighbours in the Persian Gulf through dialogue but in fact establish a permanent mechanism for consultation, conversation and conflict resolution in our region," Zarif said. |

May ministers hold 'secret talks' with Labour to force soft Brexit: media Posted: 12 Jun 2017 03:13 PM PDT Senior ministers in Britain's Conservative government and members of the main opposition Labour Party have held secret talks to ensure a soft Brexit, The Daily Telegraph reported on Tuesday. According to the newspaper, the talks -- which are said to involve some of the most senior members of Prime Minister Theresa May's cabinet -- aim to force her to make concessions on immigration, the European customs union and the single market. A cross-party Brexit Commission was also reportedly discussed to ensure an orderly withdrawal from the European Union. |

Sprint is giving away an entire year of unlimited data for free Posted: 13 Jun 2017 12:11 PM PDT Most cellphone plan deals normally come with all kinds of strings attached. Get a free iPhone! -- provided you buy two other iPhones, port three lines from another carrier, add insurance, and accept payment in the form of a Diners Club International gift card. So when Sprint quietly announced that it'll give you a year of free unlimited service, I assumed that it would only apply to people who buy a new Essential phone, or perhaps require a pledge of personal fealty to Marcelo Claure. But actually, it's a lot simpler than that.
With Sprint's new deal, all you need to do is bring your number and eligible phone (basically any recent iPhone or Android) over from one of the other big mobile networks, and Sprint will give you service for free, for one year. You get unlimited talk, text and data, plus 10GB of hotspot data and even mobile roaming. All you have to pay per line is taxes, which is a couple bucks a month. Even better is that there's no limit on the number of lines you can bring over. If you've got a family on Verizon or T-Mobile, you could be saving well over $1,000 a year, even if you're not all on unlimited plans. Of course, the big catch here is Sprint's network. Studies consistently put it in last place of the big four networks, with coverage and speed that just doesn't rival T-Mobile or Verizon. If you're committing to making the jump for a year, I'd recommend picking up a SIM and testing it in your phone for a week or two first to make sure you can still get coverage at home and at work. The bigger question here is what Sprint's really hoping to achieve. You don't have to be a genius to work out that giving away cell service doesn't make money, and there's a good chance that people will switch back to a different provider (or take advantage of one of the other carrier's switching offers) at the end of the year, and Sprint will have given you a year of service for nothing. The most cynical answer is that Sprint is trying to artificially fluff subscriber numbers before a potential merger or sale of the company, which Sprint's Japanese owner is said to be actively looking to do. Suddenly adding a bunch of postpaid customers -- even customers that aren't actually paying any money -- looks good for any potential buyer, providing they forget to check the deals section of Sprint's website first. |

Posted: 13 Jun 2017 05:20 AM PDT A senior Democratic congressman has said it would be "the last straw" if Donald Trump fired special prosecutor Robert Mueller – as it was reported that the President was considering getting rid of the man appointed to investigate his campaign's ties to Russia. Congressman Adam Schiff, the most senior Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said Congress would not sit still if Mr Trump fired Mr Mueller and tried to appoint his own replacement. Mr Mueller is currently heading an investigation into whether Trump campaign advisers colluded with Russian operatives to influence the 2016 US election. |

Japan zoo toasts birth of panda cub, snug in mum's furry hug Posted: 12 Jun 2017 02:26 AM PDT A Japanese zoo celebrated the first birth of a baby panda in five years Monday, with the tiny cub small enough to fit in the palm of a human hand. Eleven-year-old mum Shin Shin gave birth just before noon, officials at Tokyo's Ueno Zoo said in a statement. Pandas are born pink, hairless and weighing around 100 grams (three-and-a-half ounces) -- so small it can be difficult to determine their sex. |
FDA Asks Drug Company to Pull Painkiller in First Posted: 11 Jun 2017 11:36 PM PDT The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced today (June 8) that it has requested that Endo Pharmaceuticals, a drug company, remove the opioid painkiller Opana ER from the drug market. This is the first time that the federal agency has requested that a drug company voluntarily stop selling a medication because of the risk of abuse that the drug carries, the FDA said in a statement. If the company does not choose to do so voluntarily, the FDA will force the issue by withdrawing its approval for the drug. |

AP Explains: Qatar's ties with Iran and Islamist groups Posted: 11 Jun 2017 10:52 PM PDT DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The political crisis engulfing Qatar stems from accusations by its Arab neighbors that it supports terrorism. Qatar denies the allegations, but its ties with Iran and embrace of various Islamist groups have brought intense scrutiny, made it a regional outlier and created enough smoke to suggest a fire. Last week, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain severed ties with Qatar amid a slew of punitive measures. On Friday, the four Arab states upped the pressure by naming 59 people and several charities linked to Qatar on a terrorist list. |
Tim Cook finally confirms Apple is working on self-driving cars Posted: 13 Jun 2017 05:20 AM PDT Tim Cook has finally confirmed one of the Apple rumors we keep seeing out there: Apple is working on self-driving car technology. The CEO said as much in an interview last week on the same day WWDC 2017 kicked off, but he would not also confirm whether an Apple-brand car is in the works.
"We're focusing on autonomous systems," Cook told Bloomberg Television. "It's a core technology that we view as very important. It's probably one of the most difficult A.I. projects actually to work on." The CEO stressed that autonomy is a core technology for Apple, but the company isn't ready to explain what type of automotive products it's actually developing. "We'll see where it takes us," Cook said. "We're not really saying from a product point of view what we will do." Cook admitted that we're witnessing a major disruption in the automotive industry right now that includes various factors like self-driving technology, electric vehicles, and ride-hailing apps. "There is a major disruption looming there," Cook said. "You've got kind of three vectors of change happening generally in the same time frame." Cook also lauded electric cars in the interview, saying that "it's a marvelous experience not to stop at the filling station or the gas station." Apple's CEO did not mention Project Titan by name, which is the rumored codename for Apple's car project. Bob Mansfield is leading Apple's Project Titan, according to earlier reports, and the veteran engineer is responsible for changing the team's focus. Instead of building an Apple car, Project Titan is developing an autonomous driving system, those reports said. As for ride-sharing apps, Apple invested $1 billion last year in China's Didi Chuxing service, which may fit well with the now-confirmed autonomous driving project. Cook's interview follows below. |

Norway to ban full-face Muslim veil in all schools Posted: 12 Jun 2017 03:00 AM PDT The Norwegian government on Monday proposed a bill to ban the full-face Muslim veil in all schools, from nurseries to universities, saying it hinders communication between students and teachers. Norway's ruling coalition of conservative and anti-immigration rightwing parties had promised the ban last year, targeting the full-face veil called the niqab as well as burqas, balaclavas and masks. "We do not want clothes covering the face in nurseries, schools and universities," Minister of Education and Research Torbjorn Roe Isaksen said in a statement. |
