A brawl erupted between protesters and Turkish security personnel outside the Turkish ambassador's residence during Erdogan's visit to Washington to meet U.S. President Donald Trump. Turkey blamed the violence on demonstrators linked to the militant Kurdistan Workers Party while Washington's police chief described the incident as a "brutal attack" on peaceful protesters. |

Jakarta governor dropping appeal 'for sake of nation' Posted: 23 May 2017 12:38 AM PDT The wife of Jakarta's Christian governor told a tearful press conference Tuesday her husband had withdrawn his appeal against a blasphemy conviction and two-year jail term for the good of Indonesia. Basuki Tjahaja Purnama was jailed this month for insulting the Koran while campaigning for re-election, a shock decision that stoked concern about rising religious intolerance in the world's most populous Muslim-majority nation. The blasphemy allegations against Purnama, Jakarta's first non-Muslim governor for half a century and first ethnic Chinese leader, sparked mass protests spearheaded by radicals. |

Posted: 22 May 2017 06:55 AM PDT The Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu was forced to strong-arm reluctant members of his government into greeting Donald Trump at the airport – but several of them managed to embarrass him within minutes of the US president's arrival. On learning that they would have to cancel existing work commitments to travel from Jerusalem and undergo lengthy security checks just to witness the event from the sidelines, several ministers reportedly told Mr Netanyahu in Sunday's weekly cabinet meeting they had decided not to attend. Shortly afterwards, his office issued instructions demanding the presence of all government ministers. |
Mississippi lawmaker 'sorry' he urged lynching for statue removal Posted: 22 May 2017 01:19 PM PDT A Mississippi state lawmaker who called for the lynching of Louisiana officials for removing pro-slavery era monuments apologized on Monday after his comments sparked a firestorm of criticism. Republican Representative Karl Oliver had taken to Facebook on Saturday to criticize the removal of monuments in New Orleans that city leaders deemed racially offensive. The new government has accused Jammeh of massive fraud including siphoning off public money during his 22-year rule that ended in election defeat and disgraced exile in Equatorial Guinea in January. Jammeh has been out of contact since leaving for exile and his associates no longer respond to journalists' queries about the accusations against him. |
Elon Musk told Donald Trump what to do about the Paris Climate Agreement Posted: 23 May 2017 09:27 AM PDT The Trump administration may finally be nearing a decision on whether to stay in the Paris Climate Agreement. Now we know that visionary businessman Elon Musk, who founded SpaceX, Tesla, and a new, mysterious tunnel-building firm called the Boring Company, is talking to President Donald Trump about what to do regarding this agreement. Given his role in alternative energy, it's no surprise that Musk is in favor of the 2016 treaty. SEE ALSO: Elon Musk's Boring Company isn't waiting any longer The Paris agreement was negotiated under former president Barack Obama. And for the first time in decades of climate diplomacy, all nations agreed to take steps to cut emissions of planet-warming greenhouse gases based on their own timetables. If the U.S. were to withdraw from the treaty, it's likely to have global repercussions, potentially encouraging other nations to relax their emissions reduction commitments or leave the pact entirely. In a tweet on Monday night, Musk said he has spoken with Trump and is urging him to stay in the agreement. @BigDAK54 I spoke directly with The President three weeks ago about Paris. Many others have too. Cautiously optimistic of a positive decision. — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) May 22, 2017 Musk is part of Trump's business advisory council, for which he has received considerable criticism. He says he is remaining on it as a way to ensure that a diversity of views on particular matters, including climate change, make it to Trump's desk. Various advisors have been vying for the president's ear on this landmark climate deal, from the secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, to chief strategist Steve Bannon. Some observers think the president will announce his decision about the Paris agreement later this week at the Group of 7 major industrialized nations' summit in Sicily. While there, the U.S. will come under pressure from world leaders like German Chancellor Angela Merkel and new French President Emmanuel Macron to act on global warming, as it is a clear priority for other major industrialized nations. Trump, for his part, has called climate change a hoax, vowed during the campaign to "cancel" the Paris agreement, and on Tuesday proposed a federal budget that zeroes out funding for international climate change assistance programs. The budget also slashes spending for U.S. climate research at the Environmental Protection Agency, Energy Department, and other agencies. WATCH: |

Fossils cast doubt on human lineage originating in Africa Posted: 22 May 2017 03:08 PM PDT By Will Dunham WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Fossils from Greece and Bulgaria of an ape-like creature that lived 7.2 million years ago may fundamentally alter the understanding of human origins, casting doubt on the view that the evolutionary lineage that led to people arose in Africa. Scientists said on Monday the creature, known as Graecopithecus freybergi and known only from a lower jawbone and an isolated tooth, may be the oldest-known member of the human lineage that began after an evolutionary split from the line that led to chimpanzees, our closest cousins. The premolar was found in south-central Bulgaria in 2009. |
Trump budget calls for deep cuts to social safety net Posted: 23 May 2017 02:44 PM PDT The White House delivered to Congress Tuesday a proposed 2018 budget that would deeply cut programs for the poor and rural America, as well as diplomacy and foreign aid, while boosting defense and border security. The plan claims it would help balance the budget within 10 years -- in large part by rolling back benefits that have helped tens of millions of lower-income people, including many of those who helped send Donald Trump to the White House. The plan, a reported $4.1 trillion for 2018, is certain to undergo major changes on Capitol Hill, where lawmakers rarely approve a president's budget wish list in its original form. |
