Police found Raymond Myles, 66, shot multiple times when they responded to a report of gunfire at the address on the city's South Side, according to Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for the Chicago Police Department. Myles was an associate judge in Cook County Circuit Court's Criminal Division, according to the court's website. |
Disturbing video shows man being forcibly removed from a United Airlines flight Posted: 10 Apr 2017 07:48 AM PDT A passenger was dragged out of his seat and down the aisle of a United Airlines flight after he boarded a flight from Chicago O'Hare to Louisville on Sunday evening. According to eyewitnesses, the airline looked for volunteers because the flight was oversold. When no one volunteered, the airline reportedly selected people at random to be removed. |

Captured Mexican governor could be extradited to U.S. or Mexico Posted: 10 Apr 2017 08:21 PM PDT A former state governor for Mexico's ruling party arrested in Italy at the weekend could be extradited to his homeland or the United States, where he faces a string of criminal charges linked to drug trafficking, authorities said on Monday. Tomas Yarrington, a former governor of Tamaulipas state for the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), was accused in 2013 by a federal grand jury in Texas of taking millions of dollars in bribes from the Gulf Cartel and other traffickers. Yarrington is also wanted on trafficking charges in Mexico, where his lengthy avoidance of capture led to frequent opposition accusations that President Enrique Pena Nieto's government was not trying hard to catch the former PRI grandee. |

United Airlines finally apologizes, as image takes beating Posted: 11 Apr 2017 02:37 PM PDT The chief executive of embattled United Airlines unequivocally apologized Tuesday for an incident in which a passenger was dragged off a plane, and promised a thorough review of the airline's practices. In images now seen around the world, a passenger was forcefully removed and bloodied in the process -- the entire event captured on video by passengers and posted on social media. The 69-year-old passenger had refused to be "bumped" off the overbooked flight -- an airline practice that has come under increased scrutiny since the incident. |
Chemical weapons attack latest in litany of Syria atrocities Posted: 10 Apr 2017 11:57 AM PDT BEIRUT (AP) — With its missile strike on Shayrat air base in central Syria, Washington signaled that it had judged President Bashar Assad responsible for the horrific chemical weapons attack in northern Syria that drew international outrage last week. But it is not the first or even deadliest atrocity of the war. Rights groups and many Middle Eastern and Western nations say Assad is responsible for a litany of war crimes in the six years he and his supporters have struggled to extinguish a popular uprising and armed insurgency against his rule. |
Toshiba files results unapproved by auditor; warns of 'going concern' risk Posted: 11 Apr 2017 10:27 AM PDT By Makiko Yamazaki and Taiga Uranaka TOKYO (Reuters) - Toshiba Corp filed twice-delayed business results on Tuesday without an endorsement from its auditor and warned its very survival was in doubt, deepening a prolonged crisis at the Japanese conglomerate. "There are material events and conditions that raise substantial doubt about the company's ability to continue as a going concern," Toshiba said in announcing bigger than previously estimated losses for the nine months through December. The filing carried a disclaimer from auditor PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Aarata LLC that it was unable to form an opinion of the results, increasing the likelihood that shares in the nuclear-to-TVs company will be delisted from the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE). |

North Korea vows response to 'reckless' US Navy move Posted: 11 Apr 2017 03:22 AM PDT North Korea denounced the US deployment of a naval strike group to the region Tuesday, warning it is ready for "war" as Washington tightens the screws on the nuclear-armed state. The strike group -- which includes the Nimitz-class aircraft supercarrier USS Carl Vinson -- cancelled a planned trip to Australia this weekend, heading to the Korean peninsula instead in a show of force. "This goes to prove that the US reckless moves for invading the DPRK have reached a serious phase," a spokesman for the North's foreign ministry said according to state news agency KCNA. |
AT&T just made a $1.25 billion bet on 5G Posted: 10 Apr 2017 05:30 PM PDT 5G connectivity is coming, which is good news for anyone who's ever wanted to stream multiple things in 4K while sitting in a treehouse. All the major mobile companies are currently jockeying for position as to who gets to post "First!" in the comments section, and AT&T just put the stakes up. AT&T spent $1.25 billion to acquire Straight Path Communications, a company that holds significant wireless spectrum that could be used for 5G. AT&T made the deal using all stock, meaning it hasn't had to deplete cash reserves, but don't let that fool you: this is a significant investment in wireless technology for the company.
The spectrum Straight Path holds is millimeter wave-band, which is widely viewed as being critical for delivering gigabit speeds for 5G. For the wireless carriers, 5G opens up the potential to replace cable companies as the major supplier of home internet. While digging up streets to install fiber lines is expensive, time-consuming, and lends itself to regional monopolies, using wireless connections to get internet to the home has major promise. Google has reportedly already begun testing wireless transmission in place of its Google Fiber home internet service, and it's definitely on everyone's mind. 5G would undoubtedly be a big upgrade over 4G for wireless devices, and that's where the initial focus will be. But if carriers can build out networks that are big and stable enough, it's a lot more than just wireless plans that will be on the line. |

And, he's set for an even higher-profile mission, heading to Moscow under the twin clouds of Russia's U.S. election meddling and its possible support for a Syrian chemical weapons attack. |

France's Le Pen hits nerve over WWII roundup of Jews Posted: 10 Apr 2017 11:21 AM PDT Far-right presidential candidate Marine Le Pen has stirred up deep emotions just two weeks ahead of the election by saying that today's France is not responsible for the rounding up of Jews during World War II. Le Pen said Sunday that "I don't think France is responsible for the Vel d'Hiv," referring to the roundup and deportation of more than 13,000 Jews from a Paris cycling track ordered by Nazi officers in 1942. For many -- notably Le Pen's chief rival for the presidency Emmanuel Macron -- the remarks were an instant reminder of the candidate's anti-Semitic, negationist father, while also pricking France's fraught conscience over its wartime role. |

Scientists are going to drill deeper into the Earth than ever before Posted: 10 Apr 2017 02:34 PM PDT It might come as a bit of a surprise, considering we walk around on it all day long, but science hasn't really ever seen fit to find out what's inside of our planet. Thanks to volcanic eruptions we know it's a molten mix of various elements, with the pressure of gravity having turned it into an extremely hot liquid stew, but what exactly it is made of has remained a mystery simply because nobody has ever had the right combination of funding and technology to actually drill deep enough to make a solid conclusion. By 2030, Japan wants to be the first to do it, by digging deeper into Earth than anyone ever has before.
The plan, cooked up by the Japanese Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology — JAMSTEC for short — is to send an extremely long drill rig down through the depths of the ocean and straight through the crust. The drill will splash through nearly 2.5 miles of water before hitting rock, at which point it'll still have nearly 4 miles to bore through before it reaches the mantle. The researchers will use the hole to examine the area between the mantle and the ocean floor to get a better sense of exactly how the crust of our planet formed. Scientists also hope to determine the maximum depth into the crust at which microbial life continues to exist, and to take samples of the mantle in order to figure out its composition. The expedition will be carried out by Japan's deep sea drilling rig called Chikyu, and JAMSTEC plans to start the extremely pricey project — it'll cost over half a billion dollars — by 2030 at the absolute latest. |
Tillerson faces tough talks in Moscow amid increased tensions Posted: 10 Apr 2017 08:42 AM PDT By Lesley Wroughton and Yeganeh Torbati WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson's visit to Moscow this week will be an early test of whether the Trump administration can use any momentum generated by a missile attack on a Syrian air base to craft and execute a strategy to end the Syrian war. Now, Tillerson, a former oil executive with no diplomatic experience, is charged with avoiding a major U.S. confrontation with Russia while exacting some concessions from Moscow. |

The only Samsung phone more exciting than the Galaxy S8 isn’t as exciting as we thought Posted: 11 Apr 2017 04:45 AM PDT Months of leaks and rumors brought the buzz surrounding Samsung's next-generation Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ to heights no one thought would be possible. In fact, many industry experts thought that the damage last year's Galaxy Note 7 did to Samsung's reputation would take years to mend. As we said last year while the recall was taking place, however, people have remarkably short memories. Now, Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ pre-orders have already outpaced last year's S7 and S7 edge, as Samsung announced on Monday. The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ are the two most exciting smartphones Samsung has ever made. In fact, they're the two most exciting smartphones the world has ever seen at this point. But there's another smartphone being developed behind closed doors right now at Samsung that had been rumored to be even more groundbreaking than the edgeless S8 duo. Now, however, a new report suggests that the Galaxy X might not be quite as revolutionary as we thought. Samsung has been hard at work for quite some time on a smartphone with a foldable display. Earlier this year, reports suggested that the company's first foldable phone might go into limited production as soon as sometime in 2017, and the phone might even see a small-scale release sometime this year. Then, a subsequent report suggested that Samsung's foldable phone likely wouldn't be released until 2019 at the earliest. Well, it turns out that both of these reports might be correct. By way of South Korean news site The Investor, a new report from ET News claims that Samsung has placed orders for between 2,000 and 3,000 units of a foldable Galaxy X smartphone to be produced in the first half of the year for testing. That's the good news. The bad news, however, is that the Galaxy X Samsung is building looks absolutely nothing like the foldable phone in the mockup pictured above. In fact, it might feature OLED displays that cannot be folded at all. While the Galaxy X reportedly on order from Samsung can indeed fold completely closed, it actually includes two separate displays connected by a hinge. So, instead of a single OLED panel that folds in half, it's merely a clamshell with two individual screens. In other words, it's not very exciting at all. "Samsung seems to be testing the waters with the dual-screen device to gather ideas about its upcoming foldable phone," an unnamed source in Samsung's supply chain told ET News. Now, the good news is that this prototype Galaxy X that was supposed to be so exciting might still be a groundbreaking single-screen foldable phone if and when it's released. Meanwhile, the 2017 handset that had gadget blogs buzzing earlier this year is apparently just a test bed for Samsung as it continues to play with the idea of a foldable phone. |
