Exclusive: State education chief opts against Chicago schools takeover Posted: 06 May 2016 03:53 PM PDT Chicago's cash-strapped public school district is not in sufficiently bad financial shape to warrant a state takeover, according to an Illinois State Board of Education staff report. Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner launched a probe of the nation's third-largest school system in February, contending it could lead to state oversight and a suspension of borrowing at debt-dependent Chicago Public Schools (CPS). |

"The last decade has been a turbulent time for many teachers," Maria Ferguson, CEP's executive director, said in a press release. |

Maryland gunman kills woman, wounds man offering aid at high school Posted: 05 May 2016 06:23 PM PDT The Prince George's County Police Department said the "domestic-related homicide" occurred after 4:30 p.m. (1330 PDT) at High Point High School in the community of Beltsville, Maryland, about 15 miles northeast of Washington. Police Chief Henry Stawinski told an evening news conference that the deceased female and gunman "aren't strangers to one another," and that the injured man was shot after he tried to intervene in the fight between the woman and the gunman. Kevin Maxwell, chief executive officer of Prince George's County Public Schools, told reporters that no students were directly involved or harmed during the incident, though a number of them had witnessed portions of the shooting. |
