"The treatment of these students by state officials since taking control of the school district in 1999, and aggravated by three recent consecutive emergency managers, has caused profound life-long damage to the students," according to a statement by Tom Bleakley, attorney for the plaintiffs. There was not a dollar amount attached to the lawsuit, which seeks compensatory damages for all Detroit Public Schools children who have been subjected to "constitutional violations" since the state's takeover of the schools. Detroit's public school system faces $3.4 billion in debt and other obligations.

Nearly a dozen students and their parents have filed a class-action lawsuit against New York City claiming public schools are so dangerous that it has deprived them of their constitutional right to an education. The federal complaint, filed in Brooklyn on Wednesday against the U.S. Department of Education, asserted that the "staggering" level of violence in city schools disproportionately affected minority students. "The violence knows few boundaries, except that, on average, white and Asian students encounter far fewer incidents of school violence than black and Hispanic students," the lawsuit said.

Hawaii looks to mainland to deal with big teacher shortage
